We spend a couple of days in the Lake District every December. There's middle-aged me, my two 'kids' and my son's wife. This is our first stay at Grasmere and our first at Silver Fell. Neither disappointed.
The cottage/apartment is a short walk away from Grasmere's town centre. The property owner had left a torch for our use during our stay - there is no lighting on the path to and from the town, and it's black dark at this time of year.
We arrived in the dark so did not get to appreciate the view until breakfast. Stunning! The property has a lovely little patio/terrace area with table and chairs and I could imagine myself sitting there with a glass of wine in the summer, soaking up the vista. To be honest, had it not rained, we would have wrapped up warm against the December chill and sat there with mulled wine instead. Beautiful.
The property has everything you need provided, It's really pretty and the owner clearly takes good care of the place. Fixtures and fittings are of good quality and each of the two bedrooms are generously sized.
There are steps up to the property entrance and a very steep driveway.
Departure time is quite early (well, we thought so) at 10 a.m. While this is a common time in hotels, where your breakfast is provided for you, an extra hour would be better for a cottage holiday. That said, we were leaving as the caretaker arrived and she was wonderful; we invited her in and she got on with what she needed to do as we packed up the car. Holidays are lazy times and leaving was a bit of a rush. But maybe that's our own fault for not being holiday early risers.
Grasmere itself is pretty too and there are some lovely places to eat and drink, though if you're used to places like Windermere then be prepared to have much less choice; this is a small town. Some places can be a little pricey but quality is good. Grasmere has a softness, a feeling of refined gentleness (a sort of 'less ruggedness' than other Lake District towns); the place is charming. I'd been many times over the years, for a couple of hours, but this is the first time I've stayed for a couple of days.
I'd stay again, at Grasmere and at Silver Fell.
Booked this for a pre Christmas break with our daughter as she will be out of the country at christmas. Had a great time, appartment is in excellent condition with stunning views and ideal for getting out to walk the fells around grasmere. The outside decked area looked great for sitting in the summer sun and enjoying a drink in the evening, way too cold for this in early December !!
