“A Cosy Compact Cottage!”
Reviewed 9 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Silver Fell is on the outskirts of Grasmere village about a 10 minute walk from the centre. It is very well situated on Red Bank Road for several worthwhile ‘walks from the door’! The cottage apartment occupies the majority of an elevated ground floor beneath Nick and Polly’s (the owners) living accommodation. From the living room/kitchen and decked balcony area there is a wonderful view across Grasmere Lake (see pictures).
Both bedrooms have an en-suite, although the middle (double) bedroom en-suite is more compact and a tall/large person could find the shower a tad restrictive. The driveway is very steep although there is a level parking bay at the bottom. The WiFi can be a little temperamental, especially for laptops wanting to upload pictures to Facebook! TIP - Bring a selection of DVDs to watch on the large flat screen TV if the weather is wet or to unwind at the end of a day’s exploring or walking.

Thank you for your kind comments in our visitors book at the cottage. We are away quite a bit, but try to be around at weekends for new arrivals to make sure they have everything they need for a wonderful holiday.
We have just upgraded the Wi-Fi to BTHub4 which has improved things and expect to get Infinity in Grasmere soon!
There is now a good selection of DVD's to enjoy on the Sony 40"TV.
We always recommend our more spacious spa bathroom with bath/shower if size is an issue.
The drive is steep with parking at the top, and a level walk to the cottage. The benefit of the elevation is the expansive views you enjoy from inside and out. Thanks again for your comments.

“Perfect in every way”

What can I say we arrived at dusk just to see the beautiful view disappear before our eyes. We were welcomed by a warm cozy cottage with the table set for tea and ginger biscuits. A nice surprise after a wet afternoon drive. The view we woke up to was spectacular as we set out on our walk direct from the door. A fantastic cottage with all mod cons and within easy distance of Grasmere village one not to be missed thanks for a lovely stay x

“A beautiful 'cottage' with a beautiful view”
Reviewed 13 December 2013 for a stay in December 2013

We spend a couple of days in the Lake District every December. There's middle-aged me, my two 'kids' and my son's wife. This is our first stay at Grasmere and our first at Silver Fell. Neither disappointed.

The cottage/apartment is a short walk away from Grasmere's town centre. The property owner had left a torch for our use during our stay - there is no lighting on the path to and from the town, and it's black dark at this time of year.

We arrived in the dark so did not get to appreciate the view until breakfast. Stunning! The property has a lovely little patio/terrace area with table and chairs and I could imagine myself sitting there with a glass of wine in the summer, soaking up the vista. To be honest, had it not rained, we would have wrapped up warm against the December chill and sat there with mulled wine instead. Beautiful.

The property has everything you need provided, It's really pretty and the owner clearly takes good care of the place. Fixtures and fittings are of good quality and each of the two bedrooms are generously sized.

There are steps up to the property entrance and a very steep driveway.

Departure time is quite early (well, we thought so) at 10 a.m. While this is a common time in hotels, where your breakfast is provided for you, an extra hour would be better for a cottage holiday. That said, we were leaving as the caretaker arrived and she was wonderful; we invited her in and she got on with what she needed to do as we packed up the car. Holidays are lazy times and leaving was a bit of a rush. But maybe that's our own fault for not being holiday early risers.

Grasmere itself is pretty too and there are some lovely places to eat and drink, though if you're used to places like Windermere then be prepared to have much less choice; this is a small town. Some places can be a little pricey but quality is good. Grasmere has a softness, a feeling of refined gentleness (a sort of 'less ruggedness' than other Lake District towns); the place is charming. I'd been many times over the years, for a couple of hours, but this is the first time I've stayed for a couple of days.

I'd stay again, at Grasmere and at Silver Fell.

Thank you for your comments, very thoughtfully expressed, and we agree that a winter booking is certainly the test for any property! The fact that you really enjoyed it makes it all worth while for us, we love having visitors and sharing this beautiful part of the world. Our cleaner is great, and we have to respect her timescale for her high standards, so thank you for being so understanding. Really hope we see you again. Best wishes, Nick and Polly

“Pre Christmas Break”
Reviewed 3 December 2013 for a stay in November 2013

Booked this for a pre Christmas break with our daughter as she will be out of the country at christmas. Had a great time, appartment is in excellent condition with stunning views and ideal for getting out to walk the fells around grasmere. The outside decked area looked great for sitting in the summer sun and enjoying a drink in the evening, way too cold for this in early December !!
