I had read some reviews that stated that the hotel was in need of some TLC. Rest assured, the place has obviously had a significant refurbishment, we did not see everywhere but what we saw was good.
The staff were proud of their work place and this came accross in the positive way in which they dealt with us and a few minor requests.
In the restaurant , the service was smooth and efficient, the food was very well prepared and presented.
We would not hesitate to recommend the Swan to friends, and in fact are planning to spend the New Year here.
As a bonus, the hotel are happy to have well behaved pets in some of the rooms, but check it out when you book.

We arrived Wednesday 10th august in the rain, mid afternoon and were immediately greeted by friendly accommodating staff on reception. We checked in and were warned that our room was a bit of a trek away in the hotel but we did not mind. Members of staff in the corridors were friendly and helped us with our bags to our room. (45). The room was large, light, well furnished with a huge bed and a great view. wallpaper was peeling off the walls in some areas, this may need a little attention. dressing gowns and slippers were provided for us and a selection of tea and coffee. We booked in for dinner in the restaurant. The drinks list was very pricey. I asked for a small glass of the cheapest wine but the waitress brought me a large. She apologised for bringing me a large and i asked if i would have to pay extra for the wine seeing as it was her mistake. She said yes so i said i would just have a small glass, not wanting to pay the extra. She went to take away the wine at which point i felt i must have appeared incredibly stingy and told her it didn't matter. The restaurant offers 2 courses for £20. I had the liver to start and my partner had the feta cheese tartlet. My partner then had the chicken which he enjoyed and I had the braised lamb. I didn't enjoy my main as it was a bit bland, the gravy could do with something like redcurrants to give a bit more flavour. We didn't have pudding. Service was ok. Breakfast was enjoyable, a very good full english. On both mornings our toast was cold though. The coffee was lovely! Because of the dismal weather, it was very dark in the restaurant in the mornings. In the afternoons we had a coffee in the bar and it was served with the loveliest shortbread. On the first day we were charged £5 and on the second day charged £3.90. Little strange! The beds were comfortable to sleep in with very little outside noise. All in all we had an enjoyable stay, with a few minor issues but would stay again.

This is an old world hotel which has its charms and deficiencies. The room we had was right at the front of the hotel which was a little noisey due to traffic...not to bad at night however. I liked the character of the room and found it very comfortable. The restuarent is not charming, too many pillars and small tables. The food was pretty good, especially the breakfast which really quite excellent. Dinner was good too however I think one would struggle to tickle ones palate after two nights. Staff were very obliging apart from a small altercation over a very confusing dinner bill. The trick is too get a deal,i'd have been annoyed if I had paid full price. Bottom line: get a deal break and its great !

Room Tip: rooms at front will suffer road noise.

We've stayed at the Swan several times since the 1980's during which time it has been under different ownerships but the one common thread has been that the people involved in running the hotel and serving have always been enthusiastic, efficient and friendly. Maybe it's the Lakeland air?

A couple of reviews have commented on the need for refurbishment, well my wife was able to overdose on the smell of new carpets.

This last short stay was as good as any we have had, with all of the in-room facilities that are provided by a 4 star hotel just 250 metres away but with a much warmer and more friendly service. The hotel was busy and my wife's only criticism was that the breakfast service was a bit slow, the breakfast as a whole (buffet and the full english) was excellent.

We would heartily recommend the Swan to anyone.

First time in the Lakes so we wanted somewhere central as a base for our three day cycling trip. The hotel is in a lovely setting, surrounded by majestic fells and just a couple of minutes walk to Grasmere village. Ambleside, Grasmere, Rydal and Thirlmere lakes are all very accessible on the bikes from the hotel. The hotel is OLD and we knew this, but the room could do with a refit (bathroom tiles and wall paper particularly). Our room (16) also was under a broken gutter and when it rains the constant dripping of water is not conducive to a good nights sleep. When the window is open the splashing water soaks anything within a few feet. The hotel was fitting new carpets to the landings which is good, but very slow. Opposite our room was a very useful drying room, which is thoughtful. The staff were all very friendly and the breakfast excellent. Had one evening meal in the restaurant and found it very acceptable. All in all a great stay and would come again.

we stayed here during a trip back home up north for one night and ate in the restaurant . we loved the decor in the hotel and the food was very good. you need to make allowances for the age of the building, which we feel added to the ambience. Staff very helpful and attentive, great location, being close enough to Grassmere to walk into the village. would recommend this hotel any day, and will return one day.

Room Tip: the classic room was spacious with a huge bed and had all the refinements you would need
