Good but not as good as it has been. I think that this is the third time I have been for the New Year, (and also stay at other times of the year with various friends). The food the first night (from the nornal menu was very good, and so was the food on new years eve. But the following day the evening meal was pre-done and poor. Breakfasts ware a bit hit and miss with orders being wrong, forgotten, and a nearly raw sausage. The staff are good, and friendly (and the poor service was really down to it being New Year). The one bar meal we had was excellent, and the drinks service was good. I will be staying at this hotel again, but will give next New Year a miss.

Room Tip: Room 23 is a good size, but the bathroom is too small; the room on the front corner overlooking the...

Just got back from another wonderful stay at The Swan. The welcome we received from the staff was as warm as always to us and all the guests. It is like staying with friends. Excellent food and entertainment throughout the stay. The firework display on New Year's eve was brilliant. Jason had done a very good job and backed by his tremendous team.

Two excellent nights' sleep on the big comfy beds. Lovely room and warm bathroom (radiator too hot!!)

As always Colin, Michelle, Jason, Marie, Chris, Leigh and everyone else could not have been more helpful. Lovely to see you all again.

Thank you for an excellent start to 2012. Will be back again later in the year.

The Swan's a friendly hotel at the foot of very walkable hills (the postcard routes of recommended walks for 50p are a really nice touch: the one we followed was excellent). The staff were very courteous, though we wondered whether the hotel was a bit understaffed given how busy they were. Still, they never appeared hassled. Breakfast good; bar meals also good; restaurant good, but definitely overpriced. It has to be special to deserve £21 for two courses, in my skinflint opinion, whereas this was just good, albeit well-presented. I'd recommend the bar instead. No spa facilities, but you can use the ones at the Old England in Bowness, and they're predictably relaxing. Would stay again if passing through (though surprised at how busy the Lakes are in late December!)

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Swan Hotel at Grasmere. We just managed to make it home with diesel squirting out from out car. The local garage today found the problem which was a 'chewed' inlet pipe possibly made by a squirrel!!. We can only put it down to the abundant wildlife in the car park!. Never had this before. Apart from this our room was very clean and very tidy and everything was replaced on a daily basis. No problems with this at all. The windows had secondary double glazing which was a little annoying for such an expensive hotel. As we both had bad colds we did not go down for any meals. On looking at the menu and prices I would say that these were rather on the top side at £26.95 for 3 courses per persobn with sides at £2.75 extra!. The breakfast was £15.50 per person! Perhaps it was just as well that we had bad colds and off our food. A glass of wine is £6.75! In the depths of a recession these prices are really out of the ordinary. I would not say that the menu was anything special either. When we left the receptionist mentioned that she had not seen us around and we told her the reason was our colds and preferred to stay in our room once we came back at the end of the day. I have lost about 6llbs witht the cold so one good thing as come out of it. I still have to pay for the repairs to my fuel pipe! Be aware of the high food and drink prices if you book at the Swan at Grasmere. Nearly forgot the main point, the wash basin in our bedroom outisde the bathroom!!!. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. Perhaps the manager will contact me regarding the reason for this please. With a little more thought on the design the bath could have come into the bedroom and the washbasin fitted next to the toilet. As a result no window could be opened in the bedroom AND it was embarassing getting washed etc. in the bedroom!!!

Room Tip: Pay the earth.

We have stayed at the Swan regularly over the past 4 years or so, we are never disappointed. No deep snow this time! The rooms as always were lovely and clean, huge comfy bed with big fluffy pillows. It's like going back to friends now and we always get a lovely warm welcome, but the staff give a warm welcome to all guests, regular or new. We stayed for 5 nights and we ate in the hotel each evening. Dinner was lovely as always, and the puddings.......fantastic, Neils ginger cake was gorgeous! Breakfast is cooked to order and was always fresh and piping hot, fantastic choice of cereals, freshly prepared fruits, pastries, cheeses, in fact everything you could think of and more. A huge thank you to Jason, Marie, Chris, Anita, Sonia, Richard, Michelle, Anthony, Colin, Neil and the kitchen staff, you always make us so welcome. (sorry if we forgot anyone) Looking forward to our next visit when the refurb should be well under way. Jason, making sure the lock worked on the bathroom door was much appreciated..........I didn't lock myself in this stay! :) Happy Christmas to everyone, see you all soon x

My husband and I stayed for two nights in early december and I would advise anyone staying here to avoid room no.10 because the noise from the extractor fans is terrible and we had to buy ear plugs to try and get a decent nights sleep. We were warned by reception when we checked in that it was a noisy room and they were sorry but the hotel was full and they could not move us,why weren't we warned by e-mail before we came if the hotel was so booked up,I booked the hotel in September so it wasn't a last minute thing!!! I consider the price we paid way too high and expected a better standard and bigger room for the price, will not be returning.
The staff were pretty miserable too!!

Room Tip: Ask to be upgraded!!!!!!!
