What a find !.We had stayed at the Old England in Bowness and we were impressed so thought we would try a sister hotel and we found a gem. The hotel sits on the main Ambleside to Keswick road on the edge of Grasmere so is very easy to find. When we arrived we were greated with a friendly receptionist who was genuinely interested in us. We had booked a feature room and when we entered its was a mixture of old world with all the modern aspects you would want. The room, as was the whole hotel, was spotless and very well appointed. We had dinner in the hotel which again was excellent, portion size was a little large. We are now looking forward to our next break and have chosen our hotel from this chain

We stayed here for one night to celebrate my partner's birthday. We had an executive king which looked like it had been recently refurbished, it was clean and fresh and quite spacious with good facilities. We were however quite disappointed with the view from the room which looked out over the hotel's dustbins, when the advertising blurb for these upgraded rooms promises 'views of the fells or gardens'.
We had dinner in the hotel which was very good quality, although I felt that the menu could have been a bit more adventurous. The selection at breakfast was excellent. The service was great and all of the staff were very friendly and efficient.
I'd visit again, but in a different room!

Room Tip: Avoid room 15 if you want a view

Stayed here the weekend of the big snow in January 2013. Perfect setting - just a short walk outside of Grasmere. Hotel looks like, and is, a real traditional coaching inn. Downstairs is old-world with log-fires and homely decor. We had a superior room which was really very good indeed. All newly fitted - the only criticisms I have are that the bathroom was "compact and bijou" to say the least - but it worked. The second issue was that the idea of BT openworld internet - whilst great in concept - would be even better if the routers worked and didn't keep dropping the connection.

The two things that stood out for me were the food - which was very good indeed (Macdonald's generally are in my experience - and I'm not referring the the golden arched sort!) and the staff. Everyone we met was friendly, efficient and really seemed to care. The bar waiter started calling me by name (No. My name - not "names") after signing one chit. That's impressive.

Will definitely return. Well done to everyone!

This was our 2nd visit to the Swan, we thoroughly enjoyed our first visit 2 years ago so we decided to stay again but this time we took our 1 year old dog with us. We were greeted by the lovely receptionist who instantly remembered us which was a nice touch and the bar man came through to say hello again and to ask if it was my fiancés birthday again which I thought was nice. we were given our rooms which were classic doubles as these are the only rooms available with a dog, we were at the back of the hotel which was great for us as we were right near the fire exit to let the dog out for wee. The room was basic and a bit tired, the wall paper was coming off and rather dusty in places. We had adjuring doors with our friends next door which we didn’t mind. The bathroom is desperate for an update, clean though. We went to breakfast the next morning which we loved last time and did again this time, my only complaint was the who i think was the restaurant manager i found him a little rude and as if it was an effort to serve us, he gave me the impression we werent good enough for the hotel as we were younger than the other guest (we are all late 20's early 30's) he spoke to the other older guests much more politely and asked them if they were enjoying their stay, all we got was what did we want for breakfast! the other girls in there were lovely. The hotel is undergoing a major refurb and it looks lovely, i did ask if they would be updating the classic rooms (43 & 44) which she said no. Not sure if we would visit again which is a shame. It’s funny how one person being rude spoils it for the rest of the staff who are lovely!

We stayed in the hotel last weekend and had to battle with the weather to make it. Winter tires and sheer pig headedness was the only reason we made it, leaving a stream of abandoned cars in our wake.

We were phoned by Michelle on route to make sure we were ok. A very nice touch we thought. We were a team of 2 adults, 2 kids & 2 dogs? On arrival the consideration continued. Lovely newly refurbished room which was very comfortable for all of us.

Basically everything was a joy! From booking in, drink @ the bar, dinner, drinks by the fire, comfy bed. All good!!!!

I must give specific recognition to Michelle on reception, Colin behind the bar & Alex who seemed to be the jack of all trades. They made a lovely stay into a memorable stay. They looked after us incredibly with particular attention to the kids and nothing was too much effort.

As far as Grasmere is concerned, it is a Jewel in the Lake District and is to be enjoyed for its sheer beauty and the fact that it seems to still be "unaffected".

Room Tip: Room 8. Large and newly refurbished. Great bathroom also.

having read some reviews we were a bit concerned however that is about to change for good.We were put in a recently refurbished room which was in line with macdonalds other hotels.Lovely room new bathroom, carpet, spacious ,tea/coffee/safe /tv/very comfertable bed.we could still smell the fresh paint. The public rooms have also been refurbished are really cosy. All The hotel rooms are being refurbished (spoke to the decorators working in hotel) all rooms and dining area to be completed by march when the swan will i am sure be given a 4 star rating. So it is all good and if you are going now ask for a refurbished room afetr march any room will be good,Hotel on the edge of Grassmere surrounded by hills excellent location for walker, sight seeing etc.has a nice garden area to sit out in .Has its own pub which we liked very traditional with good ales although a bit pricey, only small critiscism we have always enjoyed dinner at various macdonald hotels which are of a high standard but the swans was ok nothing special. we took our small dog which was made very welcome and had access to all areas except the dining area. This is a hotel on the up and we would definately go back and recommend it.

Room Tip: come march all rooms will be nice

Just got back from the Swan Hotel what a great time we had again. Jason the manager and the

all the staff were great and really helpful, it's like home from home. The food was great, but

please could you bring back the a la carte menu for the waggoner's restaurant people are really

missing it. The new menu needs to have changes getting hard to choose something different. will

be back soon, looking forward to seeing it again.
