Reviewed 25 March 2014 via mobile

We stayed for a Friday night in March. Room was ok but not as modern as the one in the pictures, it was a bit frilly! Bed a bit too sort for our liking. Bar was Very quiet which was a shame and expensive for meals. Other than that the breakfast was superb with lots of great choice. Grasmere is a very pretty little village and great for scenic walks. I would recommend an upper floor room as the floor boards are very squeaky so I guess its noisy if you have a guest above. Not bad for the price however.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay, slightly disappointed regarding the pricing in the bar we try keep ourselves as competitive with the other Pub Food in the village but of course we only use the finest produce from all around the British Isles and of course locally sourced produce as well.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Another relaxing weekend at the Swan and I must say the re-vamped bathrooms are excellent. It was nice to find a change of menu. If you don't mind me saying so - much nicer. There were a lot of new staff, we assumed they are in training ready for the busy season to begin. This just needs 'tweeking' before they do get busy. Sent food back, for the first time ever - it came back beautifully cooked - thank you. As ever, comfy beds and pleasant atmosphere.

Booked an Executive twin room but were upgraded to room 8 a family room at the front of the hotel. The room was large with a huge bathroom with a separate bath and shower. We had a welcome card together with a box of chocolates. This was a lovely touch for returning guests.

We ate in the restaurant the first evening and had the Barnsley chop and sticky toffee pudding. Our only complaint was that there wasn't enough caramel sauce on the pudding. The chop was very tasty. The second evening we ate in the pub and had the steak pie. This was very filling.

Breakfast both mornings was as usual excellent especially the cooked breakfast..

The staff are always welcoming and we were impressed with the staff at reception especially Martha who went out of her way to ensure we were happy with our room.

Room Tip: Upgrade to an Executive or feature rooms. Its worth it!

I booked the most expensive room on a DB&B basis so can only comment on that experience. On arrival we were met by a charming lady at reception who was a credit to the hotel (young, glasses). She made us feel very welcome and showed us through the maze of the old building to our room. The room was clean, spacious but does have a couple of issues people need to be aware of. There is no aircon - no a problem in March when we stayed but in the summer? There is no room heating control other than the radiator valves. The room safe was not working. Other than that fine, no major issues for us. There is also a trade off between views and road noise in that the rooms facing the road have better views; so take your pick but the road isn't too noisy.
We ate a both restaurants, one being the more formal and the other being in the bar area. The formal area was very nicely furbished, comfortable and service was excellent. Menu choice was fine but I preferred some items from the bar menu. The wine was as expected for a hotel but the waiter didn't seem to know which wines were dry or sweet. He was charming though so forgiven.
Next night we ate at the bar dining area which was more tatty and the back room could do with a refurb. I did prefer many of the menu items and everything we had was fine with the exception of the Welsh Rarebit which was gross. Food here is less formal and you are waited on by the barman who was very helpful. I must also comment on the beer, which was reasonably priced. So much so that we'd normally go to the pub to avoid rip off hotel prices but decided to stay in the hotel. The choice of real ales was also good. Would I go back? Yes, certainly but not in the summer unless AC was installed in the rooms.

Room Tip: Away from road quieter but poorer views. Book the best room you can afford.

Unfortunately there are no plans for the addition of air conditioning especially in the original section of the hotel as it will be very difficult to have it fitted with out making it look unsightly.

We are very pleased to hear that you had a good stay, I understand that the safe was reprogrammed and is working properly now, thank you for bringing it to our attention. I am slightly disappointed to hear that you did not have a great experience in the Walkers Bar as this is a very popular place to eat and we feel that the decor suits the place.

We do look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Even on a business trip it's always nice to have one off the beaten path stay. And for an American this place had lots of character, a warm welcome and friendly staff. We also booked the winter break special from the McDonald Hotels website with 10.00 credit. What a fantastic offer. Breakfast was delicious and we had dinner in the bar each night. Our room was clean and comfortable with a most beautiful view. After spending several rainy days touring there was a warm welcoming fire and sitting area. It was the perfect way to end an overseas business trip. Now if only we could return during a warmer (yet not crowded) time of year. I would recommend The Swan and Grasmere as a destination for all my friends and family. Thank you for making us feel at home.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the front would be better for those who may not be able to walk far. Our room was a...

We are delighted to hear that our friends from the USA loved our cosy Inn and we all agree with you it is a cosy Inn and one of the best places to stay especially after a long and gruelling walk in the fells.
We are also happy to hear that you love the food and staff and appreciate telling your friends about us.
