4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014

I had booked a 'walkers break' for myself, son & father in law which included dinner on 1 night and lunch on 1 day. We had 2 rooms which also included breakfast on both days.
The hotel is ideally placed for walks in the area and the staff were excellent, arriving early we left our bags in reception and when we returned form our 1st walk they had put the bags in the rooms. Particular praise to 'Martha' who always had a smile and made us feel very welcome.
My only criticism was due to lack of clarity over the dinner package, we had been informed (at the time of booking) that we could eat up to £25 on the dinner menu however the choices were not individually priced although a number of items had a supplement amounts next to them. The waitress explained that we could have anything from the menu but supplement items would mean an additional charge. My point is that if we chose to have no starter and no pudding then surely we would be 'within budget' if we close an expensive main course yet the supplement would still be payable? Very confusing for guests - and staff!
This matter should be made clear to all.

We stayed at this hotel for our wedding anniversary thinking it would be a nice sedate hotel. It was but, the rooms were very shabby, dirty bathroom complete with cobwebs and you daren't use the shower head, god alone knows what is living on it!!! Even bedroom had peeling wallpaper and cobwebs. The room was small but adequate, nicely heated with tea/coffee facilities, iron etc. few toiletries in bathroom. Bring your own!! The breakfast was o.k. No probs there. We had one evening meal in main restaurant and was not very impressed with value for money, we would much rather have good honest pub grub when in lakes!! Staff very helpful and friendly.

I am disappointed that you did not enjoy your full experience at the Macdonald Swan Hotel, Grasmere, we do pride ourselves on high level customer service and guest experience, our Classic Rooms are earmarked for full refurbishment in the future taking them to the same standards as our Executive and Feature rooms but pleased be assured that the cleanliness is of a high standard in all our rooms and I believe this was an isolated incident and if we had known you were celebrating a special occasion we would have made your stay more memorable.

We do hope that we can welcome you back so that we can show what we can really do.

My Wife and I stayed at the Swan for 4 nights during the second week of March.

We booked the Swan as we previously stayed there for a lovely night around 5 years ago and found a great DBB offer on the MacDonald website.

When we checked in, we were greeted by the Duty Manager and a very helpful lady on the Reception desk.

Being a pain, I bought along my bike for some training rides and asked if there was somewhere secure to store it. The Duty Manager was more than helpful and allowed me to leave it in one of their secure stores. During the week, the staff were great and had no issues in getting me access to my bike.

After we checked in, we went to our room (34) which despite being slightly dated, was clean, well equipped and had all of the creature comforts you would hope to find in a modern hotel.

Once in our room, we realised that there was another car park to the rear of the hotel which would have saved us walking up & down several flights of stairs to get there. It might be worth Reception mentioning the rear car park to guests staying towards the rear of the hotel upon check in.

As part of our DBB deal, we ate in the main restaurant for 3 of the nights - excellent food, well presented and a great selection of wines, and in the Walkers Bar for one night, where we were looked after by the friendly bar staff in a much less formal, but equally enjoyable setting.

We chose the Walkers Bar for an evening as the menu is a bit more rustic and the steak and ale pie was fantastic as was my Wife's fish and chips.

The bar itself had 4 real ales on tap from 2 different Lake District brewery's.

When we checked in, we asked about local spa facilities and the Receptionist told us about their sister hotel in Bowness on Windermere, the Old England Spa Hotel.

This was about a 20 minute drive but well worth it as being another MacDonald hotel, we had free use of the swimming pool, gym and spa facilities, as well as 10% off of all treatments which we took advantage of, along with the champagne lunch which we would definitely recommend.

The hotel also has several lounges with open fire places and a large outdoor space with pub benches to enjoy a drink after a long day in the fells.

All in all, we had a great stay and would definitely stay again if we have the opportunity.

We stayed for a Friday night in March. Room was ok but not as modern as the one in the pictures, it was a bit frilly! Bed a bit too sort for our liking. Bar was Very quiet which was a shame and expensive for meals. Other than that the breakfast was superb with lots of great choice. Grasmere is a very pretty little village and great for scenic walks. I would recommend an upper floor room as the floor boards are very squeaky so I guess its noisy if you have a guest above. Not bad for the price however.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay, slightly disappointed regarding the pricing in the bar we try keep ourselves as competitive with the other Pub Food in the village but of course we only use the finest produce from all around the British Isles and of course locally sourced produce as well.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Another relaxing weekend at the Swan and I must say the re-vamped bathrooms are excellent. It was nice to find a change of menu. If you don't mind me saying so - much nicer. There were a lot of new staff, we assumed they are in training ready for the busy season to begin. This just needs 'tweeking' before they do get busy. Sent food back, for the first time ever - it came back beautifully cooked - thank you. As ever, comfy beds and pleasant atmosphere.

Booked an Executive twin room but were upgraded to room 8 a family room at the front of the hotel. The room was large with a huge bathroom with a separate bath and shower. We had a welcome card together with a box of chocolates. This was a lovely touch for returning guests.

We ate in the restaurant the first evening and had the Barnsley chop and sticky toffee pudding. Our only complaint was that there wasn't enough caramel sauce on the pudding. The chop was very tasty. The second evening we ate in the pub and had the steak pie. This was very filling.

Breakfast both mornings was as usual excellent especially the cooked breakfast..

The staff are always welcoming and we were impressed with the staff at reception especially Martha who went out of her way to ensure we were happy with our room.

Room Tip: Upgrade to an Executive or feature rooms. Its worth it!
