If you are looking for someplace to relax with a scenic view, head for the Swan. The room are nicely sized and well appointed. The rooms at the front of the property tend to be noisier because of road noise. Room WiFi is good. It's about a 5 minute walk to the city centre.

We stayed with a group and had both a group dinner and group breakfast here. It was a convenient walk from Grasmere and a very comfortable hotel. Our room was spacious with a very modern bathroom and comfortable beds. Even though we overlooked the road it was quiet. The staff were very friendly and the food was plentiful.

Just on the outskirts of Grasmere, this hotel appears expensive as it lacks kirb appeal. Small bedroom and compact bathroom but huge king size bed with lovely linens and wonderful pillows. Result- great nights sleep. Very good breakfast.

We stayed at the Swan for 5 days this July. Had food from the bar for 3 nights of our stay and it was all delicious. Staff were happy to serve us in the garden as we wanted to make the most of the glorious weather. Hotel is a short walk from the centre of Grasmere and surrounded by fantastic views. Our room (no 3) was on the front of the hotel and did get rather warm but we didn't think to ask for a fan! A night light in the bathroom would be useful as the extractor obviously makes a bit of a noise when it's switched on. Room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with a good variety of items. Staff were generally friendly and helpful. We would stay here again.

We just stayed at The Swan for a weekend to celebrate my wife's birthday. We were in one of the recently refurbished rooms (#17) towards the front of the hotel with a lovely view over the garden and the hills. It was tastefully decorated, spacious, v comfy bed and smart, clean bathroom. I really couldn't fault it.

The staff were very friendly and efficient. The food in general was very good. The cooked breakfasts were good quality ingredients, perfectly cooked. We had one bar meal which was a good quality gourmet burger. If I'm fussy the French fries were a little limp.

For the meal we had in the restaurant, we were initially seated near the entrance and asked if we could be moved to a window seat. The restaurant manager dealt with that straight away and it really made it a lovely meal having a view over the garden. The scallops and black pudding was some of the best I have had, and the main course of pan fried salmon was very good.

It's great to put the car away for the weekend and walk from the hotel. We had a pleasant walk to Easedale Tarn, and also walked around the Lake. It's a nice walk across the meadows and the River Rothay into Grasmere.

My only criticism is that the new rooms are so nice that the corridors and reception areas feel they are in need of updating too.

Tips: go for one of the newly refurbed rooms, and ask for a window seat in the restaurant.

Good Afternoon Mike J,

Thank you for taking the time to post your review regarding your recent visit to the Macdonald Swan Hotel, Grasmere. We here at the hotel appreciate all our reviews whether they are constructive or positive and share them with the whole of the team on a regular basis.

We are really happy that you chose the hotel to celebrate your wife’s birthday and a Feature room which in deed have been recently refurbished, we are also pleased that you enjoyed the food and service, I have had word with Head Chef regarding the limp French Fries, I am hoping the next time you visit they will not be so limp.

We have a plan in place to look at all public areas and upgrades going forward, the corridors were refurbished when the rooms were done.

Look forward to welcoming you back in the future,

Kind Regards,
Jason Moore

I am soory to write this review. we have stayed at the Swan many times over the years and have always been impressed with the friendliness of the staff. It used be a bit tired but the new rooms are very good. However our recent experience was very poor. It mainly related to one member of staff who seemed to have zero personal skills. He was abrupt and rude in the extreme. We ordered pot of tea for two and a latte. The tea was brought to us but said bar man would not bring the coffee and shouted Latte on the bar. Hardly appropriate at a 4 star hotel at a cost of over 13.00 for 3 drinks . at dinner the same person hardly spoke and failed to make any pleasantries. More troublesome was the fact he had been out for a smoke between serving our first and second course. the smell of tobacco smoke was overwhelming and off putting Not professional or very nice. He brought desert, dumped it on the table and said you need spoons. He came back again without speaking and left them on the table, no desert forks. we did complain on checkout and were told by the receptionist that she would tell his manager. At breakfast we asked a very pleasant young waitress where our backed lunch would be and he butted in , in a loud voice reception without any other pleasantries.

I think the Macdonald Group seem to be adopting a Ryanair approach to their brand. Cheap headline price and lots of extras that you would expect to see included. I have generally not seen kippers and smoked fish as supplements and £4.55 for spot of tea for one is robbery let alone £9.10 for two given the surly miserable service. Get a grip and start some staff development

Stayed here for three nights in this beautiful part of Lake District. Great location on edge of village with superb views all around hotel. Room was spacious and spotless with great view of Helm Crag from bedroom window. Breakfast was more than adequate and service was excellent. Reception staff were very courteous and friendly and were helpful in arranging our stay for an extra night. Ideal location for getting around the Lakes... shall certainly return.

Room Tip: Rooms to side and back have superb views of the Fells.
