We so much enjoyed visiting Brantwood and seeing where John Ruskin lived. It is well worth seeing the film before touring the house as it gives insight to the man and how he lived. The house was so interesting we spent much longer than we had planned just soaking up the atmosphere and perusing all his belongings. Very much worth a visit.

I have been here a couple of times and this time there was a craft fair within the house which was full of little treasures to buy (not all expensive). Gardens and house are beautiful and give you a real impression of Ruskin. Would visit again.

We did not enter the house due to having two dogs with us. We did walk through the gardens. These gave lovely views of Coniston water, however were very steep in places and I could imagine the paths could get very slippy in wet weather.privately owned, so there is a small entrance fee.
Toilets and a cafe on site. Free parking.

A wonderful place to visit in a dream location, overlooking Lake Coniston. A great place to get to know John Ruskin and his life.

We arrived at Brantwood from the Conniston launch boat (combined discounted entry is available from the tourist info office in Conniston). There is a bit of a climb from the boat jetty to the house, and may only be suitable for more able-bodied people to approach via this route. The house is very interesting and informative and there was very friendly, helpful lady tour guide. You go through the house looking at exhibits in your own time, but the staff are very knowledgeable and approachable if you have any questions. I found the artefacts and information to be really interesting and Ruskin was clearly a remarkable man. I particularly enjoyed seeing the musical instrument made from stones in the separate building. The cafe is also good value and they even had a cake on the menu that was gluten and dairy free! (It was very tasty!) Entry cost also allows you access to the walks around the beautiful gardens. You can spend quite a bit of time - we had to rush the last bit to catch the boat back to Conniston, but it is well worth a visit.
