“A very good "First"”
Reviewed 17 March 2013

This was going to be my partners first visit to an "Indian" it turned out to be a very good choice. Staff were very helpful and accommodating. They gave good advice, even though they were very busy, they assured us that we could take as long as we wished and there was no hurry, "Take your time and enjoy your food" and this said with people waiting for a table.

The food was very good, well cooked, served hot and just the right amount. We both enjoyed everything that was presented. The staff were attentive but not overly so. Even though they were very busy they always found time to deal with any question or request.

There was ample off street public parking nearby. Although the car park was unlit and the surface very uneven. The Bengal was only a short walk.

I have limited mobility and it should be noted that the toilets are a little difficult to get to, there being a steep flight of stairs to go up.

However I would go again, well worth it and not to expensive either.

“Nice for a change”
Reviewed 25 February 2013

Very quiet on a Sunday evening but lovely 'butter chicken' and cheese and onion naan. Would go back again, good value. Malayan dish a bit bland. Good portion sizes and left very satisfied and full!

More interesting tastes than your run-of-the-mill Indian, good portion sizes. Regular customer from the local area. Korahi is a real treat!

“Good, but like many other Indian restaurants”
Reviewed 7 January 2013

We received a warm welcome at the door from who I presume is the owner. My children like to start with poppadums and dips, and just very occasionally these will be home made, but however at Bengal they are not. Ordering my main course I gave the opportunity to the restaurant to shine by asking the owner to recommend a good dish. He suggested "southern indian garlic chicken" which really was tasty and struck a good balance between chilli heat and the other spices. The chicken tikka was also apparently good, The nan breads well made, pilau rice bog standard with the pink grains in ... drinks as ever in these establishments were hyper expensive boosting the overall cost of the meal significantly. The food was tasty, and the staff polite and attentive, so I'd recommend this restaurant if you want the bog standard indian restaurant format, but this is not one of those daring to be a bit different either with decor or cuisine.

“Consistently good Indian Cuisine in Kendal”
Reviewed 28 December 2012

We have been using Bengal in it's various guises since 2004 and during that time it has changed hands a number of times and then we have occasionally had issues with the quality of takeways.

However, the current team have been in residence for the last three years and the food has been consistently high quality whether takeaway or eat in. The atmosphere is pleasant, the staff are always welcoming and the beer good. Prices are very reasonable.

Would I recommend Bengal? Well, it's where I go - every time for a curry in town and whilst it is not right in the town centre, it is worth walking the three minutes or so from there to get to Bengal. Walk down Stramongate about 300m then when you get to Blackhall Road cutting across Stramongate look right at about two oclock and you'll see it.

If you like quality Indian cuisine, good service and a good atmosphere then I would highly recommend Bengal.
