It looks as if this hotel makes most of its revenue from coach parties, and other reviews suggest that those who come as members of a party are generally satisfied. I came as an independent visitor and my experience was otherwise. The staff were very pleasant but evidently overstretched. When I arrived, the receptionist actually drew my attention to the availability of bar meals for someone who had had a late lunch and didn't feel like a 4-course dinner. Sure enough, there was a menu in my room, announcing a range of lighter bar meals "served daily, 6-8pm". When I duly went to order one, there was no one in the bar, no reply to the bell and no reply to the bell in reception. Four-course dinner was in full swing in the restaurant. When I approached a waiter and requested a bar meal I was told that nothing was available. I settled for edited highlights of the (heavy) set menu and tried to be understanding about this because it was Saturday, after all. But when I tried again on Tuesday and the same thing happened, my patience was exhausted and I walked back into the town to an unpretentious little restaurant where I could eat what I felt like for what I felt like paying. During my 4-day stay I had the chance to observe, from my table, how things were going for the two successive coach parties who visited during that time. Coach party guests don't like seeming to make trouble: at breakfast I saw supplies of juice or marmalade on the buffet run out without being replenished, and the polite elderly guests just looking sadly and settling for something else - no doubt they could have asked for more and didn't do so, but why should they have to ask? I did ask for yoghurt, which was on the menu but not on the buffet, and was told there wasn't any.
On the credit side, the cooked breakfast was generally good and my room was a large one, high up in the building, with a wonderful view of the surrounding hills. The hotel is clean and the staff pleasant (when available). The hotel is close to the station and within walking distance of the town. The potential is there, but I couldn't at present recommend this hotel to an independent traveller. In fairness I must add that I finally wasn't charged for what I ate on the Saturday evening - but I still take the view that if you announce that a service is available you shouldn't then say that it isn't.

Room Tip: Top room is very pleasant, sleeps 3 and has 2 armchairs - but the last stage of the journey up there is by stairs. Glorious outlook, though.

I have just returned fron a Easter w/e at the County Hotel in Kendal.Tthis was a trip organised by Grand UK Holidays. I could not fault the hotel on any grounds whatsoever. The reception we received was cordial, and all the staff attentive at all times. The twin room was small, but quite adequate with a well equiped en-suite and was clean and tidy. The meals very wonderful with a good choice at breakfast and evening meal. We even had a 4 course evening meal with up to 6 choices of dessert!! For what we paid I thought it was great. The hotel is situated centrally in Kendal, adjacent to the railway station (from which you hear no noise). I'd say to anyone, this is a good base from which to see the Southern Lake District

Room Tip: We had a room at the back which meant we heard no noise whatsoever. As there is evening entertainment most nights it might be best not to have a room over the bar/lounge

We had a nice long weekend here , all the staff were very pleasant and helpfull especially Kevin the manager and Adrian , nothing was to much to make our stay enjoyable . Food was also good and the rooms were clean although somewhat on the small side , hotel is close to shopping and there is a market on saturday , very reasonably priced . Entertainment was ok

Room Tip: Rom we had was on the small side but was ok as we did not spend much time in it

Having spent 4 nights over Christmas at the hotel all we can say is that we thoroughly enjoyed our time. The food and choices were brilliant, rooms, although old fashioned, were comfortable and clean, and the staff were helpful and enthusiastic. The new manager is obviously doing a great job. Interestingly we didn't find any of the problems mentioned in other reviews.
