“Good value”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2012

A nice place for a drive break in Kendal for a stop from the M6. Well presented rooms and all you need for a night or two. Breakfast was good and the hotel is well positioned for a wander around the town. You can park about 1 minute away.

A rather tired and run-down hotel, but the staff are very helpful and friendly, rooms warm and clean, and the front door is just across the road from the Kendal railway station and a corner store. Some recent improvements are apparent - heating and double glazing, for instance - but these seem rather lost amongst layers of older and now outdated work. Any redeeming heritage features have long gone.

However, for me, The County offers clean and comfortable accommodation, two good nights sleep and filling breakfasts. A short stroll passes several pubs and cafés, museum, laundimat, rental car agencies, weekend village cricket matches, Kendal Castle views and pleasant river walks. In a limited list, The County Hotel might fall into the 'bad' category, but in reality this hotel is more pleasant than the star rating would suggest. Sort of Fawlty Towers without Basil!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the road are noisier, especially in summer evenings when an open window is needed...

The County Hotel was a nice experience for me. The staff were friendly and helpful. The dining was very good, food was varied and you never left the table hungry. Although the rooms were a little oldfashioned they were clean and the bed was comfortable, a plus in any hotel. They had entertainment in the lounge on some evenings, which was enjoyed by all. One evening we had great excitement when water came pouring through the ceiling on to the gentleman playing the piano,(he kept on playing). Someone had left their water running and the bath had overflowed...Well situated for siteseeing by public transport or self hire. A great place to base yourself to discover the wonders of the beautiful Lake District

Well located for public transport or self drive. Good British food. Great base for local visits and day trips to south lakes and further north. Much improved by new management. Entertainment some evenings with great northern humour and a wide range of music. Treat yourself to the suite if you can

We stayed for just 1 night, room was clean but everything was well worn and could do with a bit of TLC. No duvet and the blanket on my bed was in tatters! On a positive note there was plenty of hot water and the breakfast was ok but I don't think I will be making a return visit.

Hotel reception staff very friendly and room was OK. Small bedroom and tiny bathroom but clean with tea & coffee provided in room. Breakfast was awful ! We stayed 3 nights and each morning as we sat down for breakfast, before our order was taken, the staff brought out toast which was cold. The cooked breakfast was so greasy and tasteless. The last day we just had cereal which wasn't that fresh either. The staff serving breakfasts seem to be running around in circles without a clue what's going on we were asked by 3 different staff if our order had been taken. The next day we had to call the staff over to give our order after waiting 15minutes. The hotel mainly caters for large coach trips of aged people and seems to be stuck in the 1970's.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT overlooking the front. Hotel is on a busy roundabout and train station.

We brought a group of 36 walkers for a 4 night stay. The hotel is within easy reach of the Howgills and the Southern Lakes and Kendal itself is a very pleasant town. The staff were friendly and helpful. There were some small niggles but they were dealt with promptly and cheerfully. The food was excellent. We had a good choice every evening, and unlike at some hotels where there is a large group we didn't have to order dinner at breakfast time. Some rooms were better than others but they were clean. The hotel is on the corner of a busy roundabout but the secondary double glazing in at least some of the rooms helped to eliminate noise. If you are looking for luxury this is not the place for you, but it is most certainly value for money.
As there were 36 of us, we were by far the largest party in the hotel at the time. I think anyone travelling on their own and staying at the same time would have found us noisy and annoying, particularly at breakfast, because of the layout of the dining area. Just the general noise of 36 people chatting can be a bit much at 08-00 in the morning if you are not part of it.
If we are on our own we tend to stay in small B & Bs but for the purpose of our group holiday this was just right.
