Owner description: Abbot Hall was designed as a opulent house by architect John Carr of York in 1759 for Colonel George Wilson of Dallam Tower. Recognised as Kendal's finest building, it was lived in by a succession of different families over the next century. It was purchased by the Kendal Corporation in 1896 for £3,750. Together with the Castle and the Parish Church, Abbot Hall was the only Grade I listed building in Kendal. By the 1950s it was almost derelict and threatened with demolition until a group of local people formed a charitable trust and raised money to save it. It opened as a public art gallery in 1962. Today Kendal’s finest historic house is an award winning art gallery. Our exhibitions showcase a variety of works by a wealth of international artists. The Georgian period rooms allow you to glimpse what life was like in another time and provide views of the River Kent and Kendal Castle.

“Perfect gallery”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

Went to se a touring exhibition of surrealist art. The exhibition was brilliant, but so is the permanent collection. Turners, Romneys, and an amazing Tudor Tryptich.

“Unexpected treasures & a child's creativity room”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Had a great time at the museum this morning - my first time. Went with a friend and our two five year olds. We all loved it - highlights for the children were the 'Micky mouse cutting Dumbo's ear off" picture, the creativity room and the lovely cafe. Will definately be going back. And the children were free - bonus!

A couple of lovely pieces, including two Turners, but lots of Surrealism....Expensive for what it was, I thought.

“For serious art lovers”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

Some superb exhibits including Turner and Magritte.
The jewel is the Romney collection. Great for art lovers but miss it if you are not serious about art.

We were in the area and saw that there was a Patrick Caulfield exhibition on so we dropped by. So glad we did. There was so much to see, such a variety of exhibits and in lovely surroundings.
