We visited Sizergh Castle for a break on our way to Bowness on Windermere. We loved it. The Castle tour was brilliant and the guides very informative, both human and in paper form. The Gardens were lovely, but it was raining hard, so we did not linger too long.
The self-service café was busy, but the food was very good, as with most NT properties.

We have visited Sizergh on a couple of occasions and there is always something different to see. The Castle is very interesting for both adults and children alike. The gardens are beautiful and easy to walk around. It was particularly spectacular with all the rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom.

We went round the gardens the other day and all the spring flowers were out. I loved the snail sculptures made out of logs.

The house is lovely and the gardens are a delight, but don't expect a 'real' castle - it's a manor house with delusions of grandeur ( or maybe the family has!). We went on the guided tour , which focussed very much on the Strickland family who have occupied the house for the last 700 years. As they still live there, even though the National Trust pick up all the bills for the upkeep, the family has put restrictions on which parts of the house are open to the public. This, unfortunately does not include the Elizabethan chapel and library, or the kitchens which are even older. If you are interested in the history of fashion, the range of family portraits gives an amazing insight into how fashions have changed over the past 500 years. None of the pictures are masterpieces and some are really amateurish ,but nevertheless are interesting. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.
