West Barn has to be one of the loveliest B&Bs I've ever stayed in. It's been beautifully restored and decorated by Sue and is situated in a very peaceful location off the beaten track. It was the perfect place for four of us to use as our base for exploring Coniston Water and Lake Windermere.
Sue is the perfect hostess: welcoming, friendly and extremely helpful. She's also a superb cook, as we discovered when we ate in on our first night. The Punchbowl down the road does good beer but the food isn't a patch on Sue's home cooking. Her breakfasts are terrific, too (we had no need for lunch on either of the two days we stayed) and Sue uses local and organic produce as much as possible.
I'll be recommending West Barn to friends and family and would definitely stay there again. Full marks from me!

Stayed at West Barn en route back from Scotland with my fiancé. Proximity to the M6 and half way point making it a good location for us consequently. We had also chosen West Barn mainly on the good reviews on this site and were pleased that they were representative of it. West Barn is set in a lovely quiet location off a quiet lane in a truly bucolic setting. We stayed in the top room which has a bathroom off the landing, but as it's only for your use is effectively en-suite and said bathroom is lovely, decked out to a high standard. We had had tedious journey and Sue was very welcoming, even offering to drive us to the nearby Punchbowl pub to meet their 9pm food order deadline. Sue was a great host and not intruding. Very helpful advice re things to do, lent us a local map etc. Homemade cake on our return in afternoon the following day most welcome. Lovely breakfast too and certainly set us up for the day. Only slight downside is that apart from said Punchbowl ( which is fine) eating choices locally a bit limited without having to drive but with the location that has to really be a likely predicament. Would definately return again especially after exploring the local area and Windermere etc.

West Barn - what a special find! A very warm welcome from Sue, including a delicious homemade cake on arrival and excellent hospitality throughout our stay. Very quiet and relaxing place to stay in a beautiful location with easy access to the Lake District. A delightful room (up stairs), great country views and some lovely personal touches from Sue. Would love to stay here again. Thank you Sue and hope to see you again in the future. Laura and Matt

We echo the points covered by the previous 10 TA reviewers and these are ours. Had West Barn B&B not been on TripAdvisor my husband and I would have missed out on spending four special nights at a very exceptional exclusive and luxurious - (yes) B&B! If your usual style of accommodation is a hotel (like ours was) because the programme ‘Four in a Bed’ has filled you with a B&B phobia then a stay at the West Barn B&B run by Sue will be your cure. Not once did we feel like we were imposing on Sue’s (or Rosco and Sienna, the cats) home as the guests accommodation is set-up totally separate to Sue’s (and the cats) private area so you can ‘come and go’ as you please without disturbing (or seeing) anyone. Sue is very discreet whilst being on hand (if required) as your own concierge with restaurant recommendations / area guidance or assistance.
Do you want the following from your accommodation -
A superior well-appointed double room named ‘Goldfinch’ with a separate luxury spotless bathroom on a private floor?
A beverage tray - well-stocked; cutlery and crockery sparkling! Containing a flask of fresh milk and (of course) homemade cakes / biscuits daily. A vase of garden cut flowers in your room?
A scrumptious and lavish organic breakfast, served in a lovely room with stunning views and comfy seats?
Plus all the extras that you would expect from a 5 star hotel but for a price you can afford?
If you’ve answered ‘YES’ - then ‘STAY’ at the West Barn B&B and let’s all get together to make sure it gets ranked #1 B&B in Kendal!
We must say, please dine at Castle Dairy (high class British cuisine) in Kendal during your stay it’s fabulous! Opens Tuesday to Wednesday 9am-5pm and Thursday to Saturday 9am-10pm. Likewise, if you don’t mind a straightforward 19 mile drive to Ambleside go to ‘Dodds’ which is an excellent Italian restaurant. (Find them both on TA).

Room Tip: Best room - Goldfinch

An amazing find. We enjoyed two blissfully comfortable night's sleep and enjoyed the luxury of a room that was beautifully finished, with such lovely touches as home-made biscuits on the tea tray and eco-friendly beauty products. Sue is a wonderful host where nothing was too much trouble - even when we arrived very late at night. A fabulous cook too, her breakfasts were delicious and I would not want to stay anywhere else in Kendal. It is tucked away in a stunning location, but well worth the effort to follow the excellent map Sue provided. A wonderful home from home stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the downstairs Tawny - a lovely larger room, with a great shower. My partner is 6'8...

We were only able to stay the one night which in reality was no more than 12 hours but Sue proved to be an excellent host and we would have no hesitation in booking again. The room (upstairs) was spotless, well appointed and with a private bathroom. There were views across the fields to the hills and the location, off the beaten track, is superb and very quiet. Sue provided recommendations as to where to eat locally and the one we chose was very good. Home made cake on arrival was appreciated as was the good selection of tea/coffee etc. available in the room. There was an excellent and plentiful choice of food available for breakfast and the very 'full English' was fantastic. We chose this B&B not only due to the reviews but also the close proximity to the M6 as we were travelling up to Scotland. The M6 seemed like many miles away once we had turned up the lane to West Barn. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Good views from upstairs

West Barn is in a very quiet location with beautiful views over the hills from the upper bedroom. Sue is an excellent host and nothing is too much trouble to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The upper room is cosy with a separate bathroom but this is only used by the guests in the upper room so is completely private. Both the bedroom and bathroom are of a luxury standard. The breakfast was excellent and cooked to your specific order in the kitchen separated from the dining area by a bead curtain. The whole cottage has a light and airy feel created by the clever use of mirrors and and glass panel doors. We will definitely return again.

Room Tip: The upper room has the views over the hills.
