“What a dump”
Reviewed 27 October 2011

Probably the rudest staff I have encountered in years , the place is a 1* dump dressed up as a 3* . looks as though it's run by either religious zealots or an ex sergeant major . Meal times are regulated and breakfast ends before most tourists rise . Avoid at all cost .

Arrived as a "walk-in" having just arrived from New Zealand with a bad experience of another hotel in the town who claimed not to have our booking despite our confirmation.

Louise on the front desk took over and was so kind and helpful to us and made us very welcome. We were given a choice of rooms at a very reasonable rate, either of which would have been great. The one we chose had a very comfortable four poster bed, great bathroom and every possible comfort.

Breakfast in the morning was superb.

We left vowing that if ever in the area again we would certainly return. In any case, wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

We visited the Lakes and we wanted a nice hotel which was suitable for Dogs and this more than exceeded our expectations, The staff were extremely friendly and our room was fantastic. It was very spaceous with a four poster bed and a luxurious corner bath with jacquisi. It is only a 20 minute walk into Kendal city centre and it is well worth the little stroll into town as the pubs and shops are lovely. We also enjoyed our full english breakfast each morning which had a great choice and was very fresh. You must also take a trip to the Serpentine Woods which is a woodland trail through the woods our dog loved it! We would definately reccommend this hotel and will most definately be attending again in the future.

My husband and I stayed at stonecross manor on the way back from Scotland. I would just like to say I had a pleasant stay and if this hotel charged £75-£80 a night, I would not need to write this review......however..........they charged me £118 and I would like to know what for. The room was comfortable but the size of a postage stamp, the bathroom was even smaller. The whole thing needed a refurb, the furniture was so drab that it wouldnt fit in a hostel. I had a view of a garage. The hairdryer was of those sad travel things that takes about a month to dry one strand of hair and around the sink and shower area it was mouldy.
Since we were there we thought we get our moneys worth and take a dip in the pool- which resembled a green pond, apparently there is a sauna/steam which they had hidden somewhere and the changing area is smaller than the bathrooms so you just went in and took pot luck that no one caught you naked in all your glory. In the morning, you don't even order breakfast, its a buffet, and for £118 pn, I don't see why they can't cook to order instead of a buffet which has been sat sweating in metal buckets for two hours.

On the plus side ! The bed is comfy, its close to the town, free parking, staff friendly, there is a great thai restuarant in town called Junita's I think, definatly hit that. If you have booked this hotel, do not despair ! You will have a good stay, I just don't see in anyway how they justify charging us that amount of money................should've nicked the TV.

We chose this hotel for a special anniversary long weekend as we wanted to visit the surrounding area and it was within walking distance of the town. The breakfast was good, bedroom needed a bit of refurbishment and the evening meal we had on the last night was very good value for money. However we had one major complaint - a neighbour who kept his tv on full volume until late at night and also left the light on all night. Our room had an adjoining door. We had to complain nearly every night about this and on the Sunday night there was no night porter so we had to complain to the gentleman directly. When I asked on the Monday morning if the gentleman had checked out yet, the receptionist claimed that we had been offered an alternative room on the first morning, but this had not been the case. They offered to move us for the last night, but as we were on our way out we did not have time to pack up our stuff before the room was cleaned. They did turn the volume down on the man's tv, so on the last night we could not hear it so much. We tried not to let the matter spoil our anniversary weekend, however it was a pity they had not offered to move us to another room on the first morning as we would certainly have taken it.

Room Tip: I would recommend this hotel to others, however if you are allocated a room with an adjoining door...

Firstly, allow me to thank you for taking the time to post your observations on Trip Advisor - both positive and negative as we cannot truly measure our level of service without feedback such as yours.

I was pleased to read that you enjoyed the breakfasts whilst at Stonecross Manor Hotel and the dinner on your last evening. I was also pleased to read that you found your meal good value for money.

Since you have brought to our attention the issue of the noise transference through the interconnecting door between the two rooms we have now reinforced the sound proofing between the rooms, which we trust has eradicated the problem for future guests.

Thank you also for recommending the hotel to others.

Web site and brochure show a bright clean pool. The reality is old whitewashed walls going green with mildew, and floor tiles with crumbling mortar. A mismatched collection of rusting furniture completes the overall feeling of an aging council car park.

We were told that there was "only one chef" so there was a very limited choice of dinner. What we had was fine, but the hotel boasts about its dining room, and the room contains information on two extensive menus, so we felt let down.

The room was cramped with old furniture and black mould around the windows. The bathroom fittings were all rusing, and the grouting around the sink was coming away leaving a rough and mouldy gap.

We had a four poster room but don't bother paying the extra as the room is no bigger than a king size in fact quite small and every time you moved in the bed the wood creaked we had two rotten nights sleep
If you are feeling amorus then please dont make it vocal as most of the hotel can hear you t
Thought it was rather expensive for an allright stay. Have stayed in nicer Guest houses for less money
Handy for Kendal town as its 15 min walk away
