Stonecross Manor Hotel
Ranked #7 of 13 Hotels in Kendal
Reviewed 22 September 2013

My wife and I recently got a chance to abandon the kids for a night so we looked for a nice hotel not too far from home. We read the reviews, booked online but were ultimately really disappointed with the Stonecross Manor. It is tired and dated looking, but this was not the main issue we had at the hotel. Upon checking in, we went straight to our room. My wife pulled the duvet back and we were pretty disgusted to find many "body" hairs (you know the ones....) in the bed. We immediately called reception and asked a member of staff to come up to see the issue. The lady who checked us in did come up quickly and reviewed the problem. She stated that this "had never happened before" and agreed to change all the linens if we would tell her when we would be out of the room for dinner. In fairness to her, she did return ten minutes later with a bottle of cheap Australian sparkling wine, a further apology and an offer to reduce the room rate as compensation.

We left for dinner at 7pm, informing her that we would not be back for two hours. She promised that she would have all the linens changed before we returned. We returned at 9pm and were promptly told that our linens had not been changed as they were "too busy". Presumably that included the member of staff we saw outside taking a cigarette break and snogging a young man.
We then waited twenty minutes in the lobby before being told that the room was ready. They had changed the sheets and the duvet, but had not changed the stained pillow cases.

Other issues included: general lack of cleanliness in the bathroom - again, the proverbial "short and curlies" were present when we checked in and there was a build-up of nasty gunge behind the basin and bath taps. The towels were old and frayed with holes in them. The cheap curtains in the bedroom were so thin that the external security lights illuminated the inside of the room like searchlights. It was like trying to sleep in daylight until they went off after midnight. The hotel was hosting an event, so we dealt with the noise of drunk guests leaving in taxi cabs until late. The breakfast was okay, but they had a boombox in the corner of the dining room with local morning radio blaring out. It was more suited to a Blackpool boarding house than a decent hotel. I just wanted to enjoy my breakfast in peace with my wife without hearing the local DJ blabbering away at high volume.

Overall, there are much better places to invest your hard-earned cash for a night away. We did eventually receive a £15 discount off the £115 room rate but this didn't make up for a really poor experience and a spoiled night away. Never again.....

Room Tip: Here is my tip to choosing a good room - book it in another hotel.

I stayed at this hotel for one night, in a four poster room. I paid £85BB and to be fair it's great value for money. Yes the rooms are dated, but that is out weighted by the cleanliness, nice clean smelling linen and towels and the friendly staff, great breakfast and really nice leisure facilities. For the price I paid which includes breakfast, parking and use of the pool I was more than happy. There is also a really lovely pub only 5mins walk away that I had one of the best meals I've had in ages, perfect base and location, I would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Eat at Romney just around the corner, excellent food and great value beautiful meal and nice atmosph...

Traditionally decorated hotel now looking slightly tired in places. Double bedroom was a decent size and well furnished; comfortable bed; modern bathroom suite. All areas very clean and tidy. Staff helpful and friendly. Parking plentiful, Short 10-15 minute walk into Kendal. Hot and cold breakfast buffet with waiter service for tea/coffee/toast. £106 for double room for one evening is a little pricey but there are additional facilities such as an indoor swimming pool if you want to avail yourself of those facilities.

Room Tip: The hotel is set back from a main road and therefore there is not much noise in the evenings.

Stayed at this hotel recently for just one night, very friendly @ reception, nice clean room & excellent service and food offering in the restaurant. Imaginative menu using local produce. Ultra helpful night porter who arranged continental breakfast as had an early start next morning. Well worth a visit or just try the restaurant.

We have spent the last 10 weeks nipping across the road into the hotel to eat, drink and use the pool facilities as whilst we are in UK we reside in our RV. All the staff have been very friendly, including the management and owner. The food is excellent and value for money; the bar a little expensive but you expect that as it is a hotel. The new leisure facilities are much superior and all in all we will return next year. I cannot comment re the rooms but Rome was not built in a day. However I can comment that my mother held my father's funeral tea here and the food, hot buffet and cold buffet was superb, again as were the staff and management who looked after and treated my mother ( and myself) with compassion. Particularly appreciate that they allow dogs into the bar area.

Room Tip: As mentioned we cannot comment on sleep/rooms other than the ground floor. Usual wear and tear whic...
