“Food amazing; slightly tired room.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2014 via mobile

We booked a 1 night break via travelzoo which included a meal, glass of prosecco and cream tea.
The food was amazing! Seriously the nicest meal I've had in a long time. Homemade warm scone with cream and jam on arrival was also superb. Our waiter Mano was lovely and very funny; he genuinely seemed to care about our food choices and that we enjoyed our meal. We did thankyou! Very much so. Breakfast was also lovely and plentiful. The spa area was an unexpected treat; very modern and I believe recently refurbished. The room itself was ok; quite tired decor and dated; it was clean and tidy though. The staff were friendly and welcoming and I would stay again (and I'm fussy!) it was a funny blend really; modern and stylish in parts and old fashioned and dated in others. A little confusing perhaps. The four poster bed we had creaked badly and woke me up as I turned over in my sleep, but on the whole a good hotel and good nights sleep. The quality of food and spa were too notch. I think if they brought the rooms/bar up to a more modern, quality and sleek standard; this would be a truly first class hotel.

We got a night away as a xmas gift from my godmother..we booked for a thursday night til the friday in the gift we recieved it included drinks and arrivals, tea and scones and dinner also a four poster double bed..Firstly we arrived the staff we very friendly we went up to our room and the room looked lovely the deco was lovely in the bedroom part the bed looked fab...we went into the bathroom there was paint chipped off the bath damp on the ceiling paint off the door just generally abit run down..we went down for our scones and tea again staff we friendly scones were massive..then i noticed the wall paper was hanging off in the bar and when going back up to our room i started noticing more and more paint off door frames. The meal on the night time was actually out of this world i had the garlic chicken and my hubby had the steak in red wine and shallots which was also amazing!!. But sadly our night sleep wasnt the best either everytime we rolled over in the bed it would make loads of noise and the bed wasnt comfortable at all we both woke up with bad backs then there was a dog staying dog the hall which barked threw the night...as we checked out the girl asked us if we had a nice stay we didnt go into too much detail as i didnt want to seem like i was nit picking which if your reading this you will probs think im a right pain in the bum but to be fair we have 3 small children and we dont get much quailty time together so this night away was a special night and little things put a downer on it. We did however tell the girl the dog was barking she went alittle red and said oh sorry?! really is that it? so all in all i wouldnt go back for a night stayed or anything like that but what i would do if i was in the area i would pop in for my eveing meal!!! I did leave my infomation in a questionarie that was left in the room but its been a week now and havent heard back from them!!

This is the second time we have stayed at the Stonecross Manor and have no complaints whatsoever.

We have always found the staff courteous friendly and more than accommodating. The waiter Mano in the restaurant is a natural for this industry and a credit to the hotel. The chef was running a little behind and Mano came to each guest waiting in the bar to advise there would be a slight delay and to assure us that we would be seated as soon as possible. We were delayed no more than 10 minutes and looked after from start to finish. Mano has looked after us on both occasions and each time made us feel more than welcome.

We have stayed on Travel Zoo DBB packages both times and cannot praise the standard of the food enough. The portions are just enough, there's enough choice for most pallets and each course is bursting with flavour, our compliments to the chef! Breakfast was equally delicious , again with ample choice.

Big thanks to receptionist Caroline also for making sure all of our requests were met. Again another asset to the team with her warm friendly nature.

As it was my birthday I took advantage of the full Swedish Body massage with your therapist Fran, I can honestly say it was 1 of the best massages I have ever had!

I have read some unfair comments on this site saying that the hotel is "On a main road and in the middle of a housing estate"??? Are they commenting on the same hotel? Yes the hotel is on a main road , however it is hardly the M6 ! We stayed in a front facing room and the noise from passing cars was very minimal and certainly did not keep us awake. I also find the comments that reception area was scruffy and unwelcoming very unfair. The lounge area is more than acceptable for a hotel of this size and we found it very comfortable whilst we sat and ate our delicious afternoon cream tea.

I have not yet sampled the pool area however my husband did on our last stay and could not praise it enough. Needless to say I am looking forward to using the facilities when we next stay.

I would highly recommend this hotel to people of all ages. We are looking forward to bringing our children next time and also our elderly parents at some point in the new year.
Thanks again for anther great stay.
Mrs C Penman

on arrival we actually drove past as from the pictures the hotel looked like it was set in the country but it was right on the main road which means very misleading photos. we parked up and walked into the reception, it was scruffy and empty, the receptionist was very welcoming and we filled out the cards and were directed to our rooms, oh my god the room was awful it was at the front looking directly onto the main road with traffic streaming by, the hotel was surrounded by housing estates and could not be more from the idyllic lakes if it tried. the room was damp and smelled musty and was shabbily furnished with mis matched pieces,i made my mind up that i wanst staying there and had to wait an hour for the duty manager to return as the poor woman was on a double shift as the owners were no where to be seen, mandy was lovely polite and so apologetic and agreed to refund in full, mandy and the receptionist are the only good parts this hotel has to offer and i hope they get jobs in hotels where their customer service can shine

Room Tip: dont stay here

We booked one night in the stone cross on our way back home from spending new year in Edinburgh. We booked it as it is a dog friendly hotel, meaning we didn't have to leave our dog in the car overnight. We stayed in room 211....the lighting in the room was terrible, like something out of the ark and you really couldn't see to do anything practical....ie. your hair or makeup.

There were no towels in our room and when I went to reception to get some the girl said they had run out of hotel towels so we'd have to have the think ones provided for the pool. The bed sheet had a rather unsavoury engrained stain on it and whole I'm confident the sheets were washed....providing guests with blood stained bedding is rather unsavoury to say the least. The bathroom was very shabby in desperate need of a revamp. The grout was full of mildew and mould all around the rubbers and taps. The towel rail was very rusty and you generally didn't feel like you were staying in a hotel room at all.

The spa however was fantastic, all newly refurbished.....they just need to spend money on new bedding, decor and a bathroom in room 211 to compare to the spa.

Room Tip: Do not stay in room 211

This is a great hotel, contrasting old fashioned decor, cutting edge spa facilities with relaxed, friendly and helpful service. We were on a dinner bed and breakfast package with small children and their friendly flexibility and understanding of our needs was amazing - only 1 bad point. - some guests had brought big dogs, and did not have them on a lead in the corridor, terrifying our 5 year old who was knocked over and scratched - not the hotels fault but all hotels allowing dogs should emphasise and reinforce a requirement to keep dogs on leads. Examples of Service: my mum wanted a starter off the lunch menu with a sauce from a different dish and this was no problem. Example of facilities - the pook area is recently done and offers private room changing facilities with luxury toiletries and power showers. Immaculate!
