I travel to Kendal on business regularly, and stayed here years ago. Then I wasn't impressed so I've stayed elsewhere since. However, the prices this time meant that I thought I'd give it another go. I was very pleased that I did.

The location is great - right in the centre of town.

The room I had was fine - no faults and everything I need without being extravagant. The particular room I had was right on the corner with the main road, and so suffered from a lot of traffic noise that meant I was woken at about 0600 when the lorries started passing. It was warm and I prefer having windows open - I expect the noise would have been much reduced with the windows closed. If you're particularly bothered by traffic noise then it would be worth asking for a room at the other end of the hotel.

The gym is small but quite sufficient and has all the essentials for a decent workout. The pool also - small but sufficient. I don't recall there being a gym the last time I stayed here (many years) - the gym is the main reason I choose a particular hotel and I was happy enough with this one to go back.

Breakfast was ok - a little short on choice for the continental buffet selection, and also the cooked breakfast also from self-service buffet which is ok but not ideal when its a little busier.

Staff generally were friendly and helpful. I didn't eat in the hotel in the evening and the advantage of the location is that there are several restaurants in easy walking distance. The menus I saw in the hotel did look like 'hotel prices' - ok but overpriced.

Overall, I'd be happy to go back and stay there again as long as a got a decent rate.

Room Tip: Rooms near the main road have traffic noise. Rooms at the other end will be much quieter.

We were delighted to find excellent rates for this hotel on trip advisor, and also to experience the comforts of the "Castle Suite".
The rooms were nicely decorated, the first had a couch and chair, coffee table and desk, with a large TV on the wall.
Second room was the bedroom, with king size bed, leading to en-suite bath with shower over bath. Tv on the wall ,Tea/coffee with very nice biscuits provided.
The room had a wonderful view over the riverside below and over the bridge towards town.
There was a nice area to relax and enjoy a drink at the side of the bar downstairs, overlooking the river.
The traffic was noisy at times so if this bothers you ask for a quieter room.
The only slight downside to the room was that there were a few dirty marks in 2 places on the emulsioned walls which could have been wiped off in a couple of minutes, and the shower control did not have the plate attached to the front. To be fair we did not mention that but house keeping should maybe have noticed this in such a nice room!
Breakfast was very nice with cooked breakfast available to choose, cereal, fruit juices, grapefruit and selection of whole fruit in a bowl. Other breakfast options were available to order.
We ate in the restaurant and found the food and service excellent.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room if traffic annoys you

Thank you very much for your stay and lovely review. We try and offer excellent value for money, as you found when you booked in. The bar patio overlooking the river is very popular, especially as it is a sun trap! We are sorry about the marks in the room and the shower plate. We are sorting them now! Thanks again and we hope you'll visit the next time you are in the area.

This was not the first choice of a place to stay to be honest and was only chosen at short notice as the Premier Inn was fully booked.

However, having arrived and found the private hotel car park, I was feeling better about the place. The staff were very helpful and courteous and the rooms were very nice. I had a good view over the river also. I had a few drinks here and the bar extends out over the river which was very nice.

I chose to eat out on my night of the stay so can't make any comment on the evening food. However, the breakfast was self service and was very nice.

All in all a pleasant stay which allowed me to sleep well. I would be more than happy to stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that overlooks the river.

The hotel is in a good location for the town and to visit the Castle (a 15 minute walk to the castle and beautiful views from the top).
Upon entering the twin room on the 3rd floor, we found that we had 2 double beds...result!!
The room was quite dark even on a sunny day even though there was a large bay window (it would appear that it was only the 3rd floor which had these windows so therefore may not be as dark if you were on another floor). This window was almost medieval looking (which can be best viewed from the bridge to understand what I mean). Yes there was some condensation in between some of the double glazed windows but as there was only offices opposite and the river below this did not detract from anything. We stayed on a Saturday and Sunday night. On the Saturday some individuals, when crossing the bridge found it necessary to shout/sing and this seemed to amplify off the buildings and echo down the river ( window open) but the Sunday night was much, much quieter.
The room and en suite had all that you would expect.
The Expel air (fan) in the bathroom was quite noisy but once the light was switched off the fan stopped after a minute or two.
Breakfast - the toast was placed into a basket and as a consequence went a bit soft but overall it was help yourself to the breakfast and satisfactory.
In some areas of the hotel and room, the decor was a little 'tired' and could do with some attention but again this was not really bothersome.
The staff were friendly and helpful. They had a good gym and pool also.
Overall a nice experience and good value for money. We would stay again.

Room Tip: All rooms face the river/bridge.

After traveling up from Cambridge we arrived at 5.30 pm to be greeted in reception and handed our keys. Tea and coffee was laid on in the bar area but seemed unorganised and a lack of staff to deal with a coach party. After coffee we found our room ... This was ok for a 3* hotel . The view looked out onto the river but only 1 pane out of 8 was condensation free which spoilt things . In the bathroom we had no toilet paper and had to go to reception to obtain some . The silicon seal round the bath was black , the tap leaked from the top and the shaving point didn't work ... On the plus side the mattresses had covers and the sheets / towels were clean . There was no cable or sky tv in the room which for a 3* was poor. A dead spider under the writing desk was not hoovered away all week . After changing for dinner we went to the bar which was very short on staff all week. There was a good selection of beers on tap and prices were ok . Next the restaurant .... Evening meals were ok but a little small in portion size ... Day 1 was poor but they got better towards the end of the week . Breakfast was excellent 5* everyday .
The gym and pool were good . ... Overall this hotel is just an average 3* . ReDecoration is needed inside and from outside standing on the bridge the hotels appearance looks shabby !
To finish the staff pleasant were helpful and polite shame we never saw the management .

We arrived on a day when the hotel was pretty full, hosting two large coach tours. In spite of this we had first class service throughout our stay. Management & reception staff went to considerable trouble to ensure we were happy with our room, which was clean, comfortable, & well appointed. Our deal included afternoon tea, dinner & breakfast. The afternoon tea was as good as anything we've had at Betty's, dinner was surprisingly good - nothing pretentious, a generous starter, a very well cooked beef bourguignon, with loads of veg., & perfect English strawberries with cream. And breakfast was hot & plentiful, with lots of choice on the buffet. We enjoyed the spa facilities, which were pleasant, & we particularly liked the fact that we could swim until 9.45pm, when we had the place to ourselves. This is a very good hotel, largely due to the hard working staff. Of particular note, the manageress, who broke off delivering A LOT of heavy luggage to the rooms to attend to us with efficiency & courtesy. Outstanding.

What a lovely review thank you! We really enjoyed reading it. To be mentioned in the same sentence as Betty's regarding our afternoon tea really means a lot. Spread the word! Thank you for the 5-star rating as well. We are delighted that our amenities, food and accommodation met with your approval. The staff surely appreciate your noticing how hard working they are. You are quite right that they are a credit to the hotel. Thanks again and we will look forward to seeing you again hopefully.
