“Christmas do-n't.”
Reviewed 11 December 2013

I've been here a few times before for the carvery and it was good, food was good (occasionally a little cold but their more that happy to heat it for you) and drinks are reasonably priced. So I had no qualms for suggesting here for our work Christmas meal. We left it quite late and was told that they had one table left however it would have to be clear by 8 as there was another part coming in which one fine. We preordered, so upon arrival we were seated and ordered our drinks. Our starters arrived and looked lovely, the pork terrine was extremely tasty after a sprinkle of salt and pepper and the accompanying bacon scone was equally as nice.
The mains were brought quickly after. Two of my friends had the salmon which looked lovely however our turkey dinner was not so appealing. Two reasonably slabs of turkey, 5 small boiled potatoes, 4 green beans, two stuffing balls and a mediocre dollop of cranberry sauce (sung to the tune of 12 days of Christmas) with no roast potatoes or, much to my dismay, pigs in blankets in sight it was a sorry affair. There was no butter for the potatoes, we had to collar a waiter to get some. The turkey tasted Bernard-matthew-esque, the gravy runny and overly sweet and the stuffing balls lacking something, I'm sure to say I was reasonably disappointed.
The desserts were lovely, sticky toffee pudding was nice, very good size portion. Likewise the cheesecake, however the cheese board was more than disappointing. Presented with 4 jacobs crackers, one quarter of celery and a hand full of grapes was quite a funny sight, alone with the vast variety of 2 cheeses (Stilton and maybe cheddar?) It was almost laughable.
Service was pretty dire, there didn't seem to be enough staff. The manager seemed peed that we had questioned the bill when a substantial amount of change wasn't returned to us, and huffed and puffed for the card machine as a friend was paying by card. Then a lovely sarcastic comment to go away with, we definitely didn't tip. It's a real shame as the carvery is lovely, the tapas bar snacks things have always been nice and it's generally a nice place to eat. I must say I have come away feeling let down.

“Lots of potential. But disappointing.”
Reviewed 11 December 2013

Romneys was recommended to us so we decided to try their famous carvery. We were seated straight away and the waiter/ manager took our drinks order. He returned promptly with drinks and told us that all we had to do was go up and get food when we were ready.

From their the whole experience was a let down. When we went to get our carvery the server informed us that the chef was just preparing fresh veg so if we waited 15 minutes we would have fresh hot veg. This seemed like a good idea so we waited and 15 minutes later were told we could now get food. However when we got our food we were told that the carvery was being cleared away so we would only have 10 minutes to decide if we wanted any extra veg. The server told us he would make a plate up but we felt very rushed. When the plate of veg was bought over none of us could eat fast enough for the veg to be warm by the time we wanted it. We felt that we should have been informed that the carvery was finishing when we arrived as we would have been happy to order from the evening menu. No signs informed us of times or prices of the carvery.

We received very little attention from waiting staff over the evening when we ordered drinks we spotted the waiter we had ordered them from stood behind our booth chatting with colleagues for some time. Drinks took 15 minutes to arrive.

The real joke was when we finished our meal and after the waiter cleared our plates. Staff must have walked past our table 15 times while we actively tried to get their attention to get the bill.

During the whole experience the other table in the area we were sat received excellent service. Waiters kept asking if they everything was alright. Checking if they needed drinks.

The decor of the place is beautiful and the food was good. But service was such a disappointment. We all felt that the price we paid would have been reasonable if the service had been better. But £3.00 for a large coca cola is ridiculous. And unfortunately the service was poor. We may have been tempted to stay longer for desserts/ drinks had we had a better experience but we left as soon as possible and had dessert elsewhere.

“lovely carvery - can cope with large table - friendly staff :-)”

A self served meal for a large party which was fab, hot plates, plenty of veg, good selection of condiments - quick service at bar and friendly staff.

We've been before and will return again - keep up the good work Romneys!
