“Self catering apartment in country hotel grounds”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

We stayed in Groom's cottage - a one bedroom self-catering apartment in the grounds of Heaves Hotel. The hotel is an old country house dating from the early 1800's and is set in attractive grounds. What is probably the old stable block has been converted into a number of self-catering apartments. Groom's cottage has a living/dining room and kitchen on the ground floor and a good sized double bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.

Heave's Hotel is in an convenient location for exploring the Southern Lakes - just 4 miles south-west of Kendal, it is easy to get to being only a few minutes drive off the M6 and just off one of the main A roads that takes you towards Windermere and the other lakes. It is virtually next door to Sizergh Castle, a National Trust property.

The staff were always very helpful and pleasant in meeting any needs.

We have passed by this hotel, which is located quite close to Sizergh just off the A590, many times and a visit to attend a vintage fair there brought us to see just what a wonderful setting this hotel is positioned in. Set in beautiful grounds there is a majestic feeling to the hotel as you enter the grand hallway.

I stayed here with my girlfriend while spending time with some of her relatives and we throughly enjoyed our stay. Yes, the words 'quirky' and 'shabby chic' spring to mind but, for me, these qualities just made our stay absolutely fantastic. I can easily imagine that some hotel owners would spend an absolute fortune trying to re-create the same look (and then charge an outrageously high price to stay there)

It was dark when we got to the hotel and driving up the drive for the first time at night was like arriving at a mysterious mansion. It got even better when we walked in to the main hall and saw the grand staircase and the flagstones; It was like something out of an Agatha Christie novel.

We were warmly greeted by the owner, Catherine, and shown up to our room on the third floor. I was half expecting the ghost of 'Rising Damp's' Rigsby to be waiting around the corner but sadly he wasn't. Our room (17) was spotlessly clean and comfortable and had plenty of space.

We had two evening meals and breakfasts and the food was good home made fare and reasonably priced.

Location-wise, the Heaves is well situated for exploring the southern Lakes area by car, being aprox 4 miles from Kendal. This was my first, somewhat brief, visit to the Lake district and I would very much like to return and when I do I will certainly stay at the Heaves again.

In conclusion, I can't agree more with chompercharlie; if you want to wake up in an unimaginative, bland, standardised hotel room then the Heaves probably isn't for you. However, if you want a unique, memorable, fun, cosy, wonderful hotel stay, do not miss the opportunity to stay here.

We have stayed at the Heaves many times over the last 12 years. We love it, our family love it and our friends love it. The rooms are fantastic. The owners are wonderful and the food is really nice. We return year after year and are never disappointed. Yes, it's shabby chic, but it's all the better for it!
