Stunning Drive to the mine - no time to go in as we were on a fleeting visit, but the mine itself looks interesting from the places to see in Lakeland brochures

“An Interesting Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

The Journey from Keswick to Hoisted is a lovely experience with steep and winding roads. You can stop and admire the nature and beautiful landscapes .After you pass the Honister pass on top of the hill is the Hoisted Slate Mine. We were told it is one of the few working Slate Mines. Due to paucity of time we did not take the Tour Of the Mines, but visited the Museum which gives an understanding of the functioning of Mine and how it was revived. The shop is a unique experience and you can see many articles made out of Slate and buy a few which appeals you. The restaurant though not very good is good for having a cup of Coffee and Snacks. A worthwhile experience.

“Dress very warmly”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2014

This is the last still-functioning slate mine in England. There are tours of the mine during the day and the tours last about 80-90 minutes. Miner's hat are provided to all tour members. Tour does not include a lot of geological information, more about the man who resurrected the current mine and the hardships of the miners. Dress very warmly ! The temperature in the mine the day we toured it was 11 degrees Celsius and very windy inside the mine shaft. Great rainy day activity.

“Got to go , amazing slate for special gifts”

A tad expensive but it is a unique place and the gifts are lovely and good place to walk up to haystacks and stop for a cup of tea afterwards
