The closure of the mining museum is a sad loss for Keswick. The owner, Ian Tyler has, I understand, retired - which he undoubtedly deserved to do, but it is a great loss to geological enthusiasts

Machines, history, mine, German roots, railway trip. Make sure you've got warm clothing if you go in the mine. A special destination for boys up to the age of 93.

This little gold-mine ( no apologies for that) is exactly that; an amazing collection of all kinds of things to do with mining in the Lake District. The exhibition is the result of one man's passion and that of his now departed wife ( a section of the exhibition is movingly dedicated to her and her love of the geology of cave systems & mining). These two people gathered no end of specimens and historical documents all about the people and their methods of extracting precious minerals from the earth around Keswick. This landscape has been shaped by human activity for thousands of years and this place is an incredible testament to all those who toiled to unearth copper, iron and other elements for our use. Ian Tyler is the creator and now vendor of this collection. Keswick will have lost a splendid little attraction.

This little museum has a great stock of books as well as the huge array of minerals. It's such a shame that this little gem is about to close
