“Biggest breakfast ever”
Reviewed 21 January 2014

My partner booked us in here to help celebrate my sixtieth birthday and he wanted to try the famous "cow pie". Managed to park behind the hotel, which was handy. Warm welcome as we booked in, but the member of staff who then manned the office for the rest of the evening could barely rouse himself to answer a question. The room (a family room) was huge, extremely warm as the weather was dire which is not unexpected for the Lake District, but the king size bed needed a new mattress as it was unsupportive and the springs twanged every time one of us moved. The lamps on the bedside table were very dusty, which was strange considering that the rest of the room was so clean. I had a poor night's sleep as I was disturbed by the street light directly outside the window - a blackout blind might be a good idea. The bathroom was also huge, but barely leg room to sit on the toilet and the grout in the tiles surrounding the bath/shower needed a good clean, which always puts me off! However the food was fantastic and the portions huge; I have never had such a large cooked breakfast. So, yes, I admit I'm pernickety, but it is not cheap to stay here and so I expect perfection for that money. I would visit again for the food, but wouldn't rush back to stay.

Just spent two nights here and everything was perfect, room nice and spacious bed very comfortable, the breakfast excellent and the evening meals very good choices and you get plenty never got round to having a dessert, always too full from main meal, and as for the staff well they cannot do enough for you lovely and friendly will definitely be going back, we highly recommend the George hotel.

My husband and I had a 2 night stay. Got lucky with a car parking place at the back of the pub.
Room very spacious and clean, comfy bed which is a must after a full day of walking.
Breakfast = excellent, keeps you going all day.
Evening meal - too many good choices. Had starter and main meal 1st night. Main meal and dessert on 2nd night. All excellent, portion sizes not for the faint hearted.
Would recommend and will go back.

We recently had a 3 night stay at the George Hotel. No complaints, Our room was spacious, comfortable and warm. Breakfast was excellent and substantial. We had our evening meal in the hotel twice and cannot fault the food. I am unable to comment on the Dessert menu as we were never able to get that far due to the huge portions of the main meal. If you plan to eat there, make sure you are VERY hungry before you sit down. This was our first visit. It won't be our last.

We recently stayed two nights in a B+B in Keswick and the landlady recommended that we try the George pub for our evening meals, we took her advice and were not disappointed.
For those who enjoy good wholesome homemade food then you will like it here. I tried the Cow Pie which consisted of large chunks of steak cooked in a rich gravy and held together in a lovely shortcrust pastry, it was superb. i am not easily impressed but whoever cooked that pie should be applauded.
There was a small selection of real ales including Jennings and i would recommend the Snecklifter to have with your meal.

An old coaching house/traditional market town public house situated on the main street in Keswick, dating from around the 17th century. A great deal of the original character and fabric of the building remain unchanged (I would imagine) from it's origins. A plaque on the wall outside the main entrance, which is on the pavement of a very narrow street, informs of all the famous (and infamous) patrons who passed through the doors. The hotel has a very quirky feel and character - lots of wood paneling, narrow twisting staircase, uneven sloping floors, doors that don't quite fit the openings and a wonderfull atmosphere. Ours was a late booking (3 hours) and the room we had overlooked the main entrance, which we were a little concerned about as the pub was very lively on our arrival at 6.30 and we were dreading the late night departures and possible noise. But our concerns were unwarranted. Obviously people were still leaving the pub and restaurant until late night but caused no disturbance. The room was quaint but very comfortable and clean with most of the items you require -tea,coffee, hair dryer etc., and a small, wall mounted TV which looked and performed as though it had been to a party the night before! The en-suite had been built into the original largish room and so occupied probably a fifth of the original room, but even this fairly modern addition still had a wonky floor and ill-fitting door which blended perfectly with the overall flavour. Car parking around the rear of the pub is very limited and is very much on a first come basis but the hotel has an arrangement to use the town main car park which is only a short walk away. The staff could not be faulted in any way and were efficient and obliging in every respect. Breakfast is served in the restaurant area and is as comprehensive and filling as you may need. I have reviewed the restaurant elsewhere but would class that as excellent also. I will have no hessitation in re-booking at The George in future. .

Room Tip: Take a gamble and enjoy!
