Burnside B&B
Ranked #8 of 196 Keswick B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 March 2010

We stayed for 4 nights and had a fantastic time.

The B&B is located just outside of Keswick town centre, a 15 minute walk into town or a 2 or 3 minute drive. We visited a number of places including Ambleside, Wordworth's home in Grasmere, Wastwater and Thirlmere so travelled a fair way around the Lake District. We found Keswick to be a good base for some shorter walks including one to the Castlerigg stone circle (which is quite close to the B&B)

We arrived reasonably late on a Wednesday night but Peter was there to welcome us (and offer recommendations on where we could get some food). The room was spotless, tastefully decorated and nice and warm.

Breakfasts were excellent (I can recommend the full english and the belgian waffles!). Peter was an excellent host, lending us his maps of the area so we could go out exploring the fantastic scenery, getting us weather reports. We really couldn't have asked for any more.

I would thoroughly recommend Burnside...

A lovely, comfortable place to stay with a great hearty full english breakfast.
Mr Garner came and rescued us when we got lost in Keswick due to some road closures...above and beyond the call of duty! Will definitely be recommending to family and friends.

We stayed at the Burnside at the end of January 2010. We had searched the internet looking for a good standard of accomodation, at the right price, This B+B was then recommended by a friend, and we were not disappointed!
We recieved a very warm welcome from the owners, Sharon and Peter, who were very knowledgable of the local area, and advised us on some beautiful places to visit.
We stayed in room 3, decorated to a modern high standard, and spotlessly clean.
The room has a good view of Latrigg, and all the amenities you would expect from a well run family B+B. There are a variety of choices for breakfast, to suit all tastes, we opted for the full English, which was superb.
After a long morning walk, It was lovely to return to a warm and cosy room, to find homemade Flapjacks left by the owners. It's little touches like these, that set the Burnside apart from other places we have stayed.
We enjoyed our evenings out in the town centre, which is a short walk away, and were recommended some nice places to eat.
All in all, an excellent place to stay, and we look forward to going back there soon.

We have stayed in a number B&B's and this is certainly one of the nicest. Our room was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean, cosy and welcoming. Breakfast was brilliant with a great selection for the meat and non-meat eater. Sharon was lovely and advised us on a suitable walk for the unpredictable weather conditions (Castlerigg and Walla Crag). Although the views directly from the B&B are not the nicest we have had in the Lakes, they were as expected as we have passed through that part of Keswick a number of times before. The location however is perfect for exploring the Lakes in general and the views from Castlerigg and Walla Crag and areas surrounding Derwent Water are some of the best we have seen in the Lakes and in fact anywhere else in England (simply put - breathtaking!). The town of Keswick is friendly, however It is much more appealing in the evening, with a good selection of pubs and various restaurants to suit all tastebuds (thanks to Peter for the good advice). Because of the overall quality, value for money, the location slightly outside of the main town and excellent surrounding walks we will definitely be back at Burnside. All in all a perfect mini-break!

Okay, before I write this review I must state that it was our first stay in a B&B so perhaps I set my expectations slightly too high. I'll start with the positives though because there were plenty of them - it was absolutely fantastic value compared to other places nearby. The breakfasts were good - we are both vegetarian and were catered for no problem. It was nice eating by the wood burner in the dining room too. It was spotlessly clean and the location was close to Keswick town centre. Sharon was very nice to us, answering any questions we had about the area - Peter didn't say much on the one morning we saw him. Keswick was great and we loved all the pubs and shops in the centre and it's a fantastic base for lots of walks. We also visited Windermere, Ambleside, Hawskhead and Kendal during our stay and none were too far away in the car. Sharon mentioned a beauty spot that we might like to visit on our way home and it was well worht the short de-tour. It was at the top of a mountain with a sheer drop - breathtaking views!

I think the problem I found was that our room was just too small - we had number 3 at the top and when I'd booked the room, I was told this was the one with the nice views. Granted, the entire Lake District is beauitful but the view wasn't great and mainly looked onto the backyards behind. If Room 2 had've been free then I think we'd have been better with the extra spece as I felt quite claustrophobic at times and it's not something I usually suffer with. We didn't spend a great deal of time in the room during the three nights we were there but as it was very cold and we'd come for a break we did go back for an afternoon nap one day. Our room was very cold as the heating wasn't on during the day and although we didn't see it as a huge problem, it had been snowing out so it was very cold. Again, we didn't come for the TV but we did catch a film as we were getting into bed one night after a long day's walk and the TV is mounted too high on the wall for when you are laying on the bed. As this is the only place to watch the TV from, it made it impossible to see properly. It's an LCD screen so if it's at the wrong angle, everything just looks dark. It's mounted flat against the wall with no way of adjusting it so we chose to watch things saved in my husband's phone instead.

It might seem like I've moaned about silly things but if you check my other reviews, you'll see we aren't ones for being picky or fussy. I just felt that after all the rave reviews on here, we'd have felt more satisfied. We probably couldn't beat the price and we did have a lovely stay, hence the 4 stars but there are hundreds upon hundreds of guesthouses in the Lakes and we might try somewhere a little bit more picturesque next time.

We're grateful for all the reviews / feedback we receive from our guests including this one.

However had this reviewer let us know they were cold and couldn't view the TV properly we could have addressed both issues quickly and easily.

All our rooms have radiator mounted thermostats so guests can adjust the temp. themselves. The angle of the TV is also adjustable if required. It only shades in the flat position if lying absolutely flat on the bed. Sitting in a chair or upright in bed it's perfect.

We dedicate an individual webpage + images to all our rooms so potential guests can match their expectations with what we offer. Perhaps we should add an image of the view too.

The view from room 3 is dominated by Latrigg, a wooded fell. Blencathra is visible to the right and Barf and Lords Seat to the left. True our backyard is visible but it's small compared to the mountains surrounding it.

We're sorry that this reviewer didn't find Peter talkative while serving their breakfast. Both of us like to serve breakfast to everyone as promptly as possible with the minimum of fuss. An approach that we find most of our guests appreciate. If we aren't full or our breakfasts timings are spaced it isn't a productive use of our time for both of us to be on duty at each and every sitting. As was the case in this instance.

We try to please all people all of the time. However we do appreciate this isn't always posible even for those that aren't being 'picky or fussy'.

Due to a mix up between my wife and I, we actually arrived a day too early... Upon realising our mistake, we were relieved and grateful that Sharon accommodated us without any problems.

The B&B is beautifully decorated, warm and cosy and the rooms and ensuite were immaculate. It is a real nice 10 minute walk alongside the river into Keswick which we did every day. We were given lots of advice on what to do, places to visit which is great as we have never been to Keswick before.

The breakfast is superb, with a huge choice of cereals, drinks and hot breakfast options.

If you want a quiet, relaxing break in a B&B where you know you will get looked after then this is it!

Thank you and see you soon.

Mark and Dawn

Enjoyed an excellent 3 night stay at Burnside guest house with my wife. The room was hugely impressive, with tasteful decor, spotlessly clean and well equipped. The large flatscreen TV with freeview and comfortable sofa made the room more like a suite and meant we had a very relaxing stay. The bed was firm and ensured us a sound nights sleep. The guest house is on a road at the edge of town but it is not busy in the evenings (or most of the day for that matter) and road noise is not great at all - we live in a small rural Wiltshire village and had no problems sleeping. It took us about 15 minutes to walk into Keswick for pubs and shopping. The hosts, Sharon and Peter were so friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough to assist us and offer advice. The breakfast was fine and the dinning room is also beautifully presented with a lovely wood-burning stove to give a really cosy atmosphere. We parked about 30 metres away on a side road which wasn't a problem at all in this part of town. All in all, superb and we will defintely use again.
