“High hopes yet big let downs”
Reviewed 13 April 2011

This looked like a great place to eat...and although it was a pub...it sold itself as a restaurant/bistro...and after seeing the meals come out...we were looking forward to it.
After ordering from the very unfriendly bar manager who looked like he couldn't care less about his customers...i waited for my 'whole seabass fish grilled, with new potatoes, green beans and lemon and butter'.....and then finally...the waitress comes with our food and places in front of me....'a piece of scrawny filleted fish (soggy, obviously not grilled - assumed microwaved), with old potatoes, peas and ..... that was it'. It was hardly worthy of being on the specials board...and not quite as advertised. My partner had the hotpot however which was basic and easy to make....but very tasty.
My advise would be to stick to the traditional pub grub and you can't go wrong...but want anything that involves a little bit of skill in the kitchen...then go to one of the many proper restaurants in town.
And if you want cheery staff....don't expect that either.

“Very nice pub lunch”
Reviewed 31 January 2011

We visited on a busy Sunday lunchtime and enjoyed very good quality home cooked food with efficient service and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere. We have visited before and felt that on this occasion the food was of a better quality and standard than on previous occasions.

“Great Atmosphere and excellent pub grub”
Reviewed 21 February 2010

As a family of 4 we ate at Keswick Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed it. The large open fires and spacious dining rooms were inviting and the pub food was great, we sampled the steak and gammon - both meals were very tasty.

“Nice pub, terrible food!”
Reviewed 28 November 2009

The pub is great - a nice building with two roaring fireplaces. The staff are friendly and helpful (despite a badly organized bar and till setup). The food, however, is awful, unimaginative and very overpriced. We weren't terribly impressed with many of the restaurants in Keswick in general, but this was one of the most disappointing places we went. The menu is mostly traditional pub food, which if done well is a comfort and a delight. The Keswick Lodge, however, specializes overcooked meat with frozen chips. Their food seems almost wilfully bad in an area that is known for its excellent locally sourced and seasonal fare.

For example, I chose the Supreme of Chicken, which was described as chicken and bacon on a "Cumbrian rarebit" with a damson and onion gravy. I got dry chicken and bacon so tough I had to saw through it, both sitting on a piece of toast covered in burnt, bland cheddar cheese. The whole thing was topped with a sickly sweet gravy. While it wasn't inedible, the meal was very disappointing.

What I found most frustrating was the implication that this was a 'local' speciality. There was no mention of where the bacon and chicken came from. Although I'm assuming that the "Cumbrian rarebit" implies a Cumbrian origin for the cheese, no details were given. Was it a local Cumberland farmhouse cheese? A Cumbrian smoked cheese? The 'seasonal' vegetables that accompanied the meal included a floret each of broccoli and cauliflower, a few carrot slices, and a few strands of cabbage. While each of these is currently in season, they all tasted as if they were cooked from frozen.

I'm not a local food fanatic, and I don't expect miracles for £8.95, but please don't try to cash in on being locally sourced without the commitment to see it through. Switch to real local food and hire someone who can actually work with good ingredients!

“Great Pub Food”
Reviewed 10 September 2009

We recently stayed in a B&B on the outskirts of Keswick and walked into the town for evening meals. We intended to only have a drink at Keswick Lodge and go elsewhere for food, but after seeing some of the meals coming from the kitchen decided to ask if there were any tables free, as it was very busy.
The waitress said it was no problem and gave us a choice of tables either in the bar or dining area. When seated we ordered the steak and ale pie, which came within 10 minutes, piping hot with a good selection of veg and chips. It was one of the best meals during our stay and the staff were very busy but friendly and curteous.
