Our third year at the Highfield for a birthday break and again we had a super stay. Friendly and caring staff, very nice room, - and Oh! The food! Absolutely delicious. Will be booking for longer next year. Perfect position to walk into Keswick, and you can leave your car, and use bus or Keswick launch to get to various places for superb walks around Derwent water. A great base for a short break - or a long one if your diet can take it!

As it was our 25th anniversary on 2 March we wanted to stay somewhere special and chose the Highfield as we had been impressed by our previous 2 visits. This hotel is one of the best we have stayed in, in the UK. The hotel management decided to do a refurbishment of the rooms overv the past few months and what a wonderful job they have done. Our room (4) looked out on Hope Park with amazing views of Derwentwater and the fells. The weather we had also allowed us to sit on the balcony and really take in the picture in front of us. The staff as always were friendly helpful and unobtrusive. Now the food. As always the chefs produced excellant food for dinner meals with starter, main course and sweets always produced a very presentable manner. There is actually no down side to this hotel. It is a perfect position in Keswick, has private parking at the rear, excellant rooms and exquisite food. Well done once again the HIghfield.

Nothing disappointed. Had room 17 on first floor. Very roomy with large bay window and superb view over the park to the Lake. Room and ensuite bathroom very clean and very warm in rather cold (December) but otherwise pleasant weather ( three or four weeks after floods - a previous guest looking at the fllooded park had apparently been surprised just how close "the Lake" was to the hotel). A good spacious car park which indeed is useful in Keswick. Hotel is very close to centre of town and great base for walks around Keswick or just strolling about the town (try the walk beginning near the leisure centre along the disused railway line which criss-crosses the Greta river - you can take a diversion to Castlerigg Stone Circle part way along this route). Hotel about three quarters of a mile (?) to the Theatre By The Lake so that's an easy walk for theatre goers.
The sample menu on the Hotel's own website is a good guide to the lovely dinners which were superbly cooked and presented. The wines on offer were a tad expensive but the Australian Opal Ridge was gorgeous. The breakfasts were very good indeed, if not quite up to the standard set by the dinners (you'd expect a slightly more exciting sausage in Cumbria!).
Service from the hosts and the young waitresses was very courteous, efficient and polite (maybe some guests (like my spouse) might like the hosts to display a little more interest in the guests' adventures in the day but I thought the hosts were pleasant without being intrusive).
Possibly the hotel is more expensive than most other accommodation in Keswick but you get what you pay for. It was worth it. You could of course try eating out instead of having dinner in, and there is a good choice of eateries in Keswick with a variety of cuisines but we doubt we would have saved much money or that it would have been as good if we had eaten out.
Hope to go again soon and noted from the visitors book that there is a lot of repeat business.

Booked feature room 2 with first floor bay window with fantastic views over the park and lake. Previous reviews sum it up very well. Large car park is a huge bonus in Keswick and you are literally a couple of minutes from the town centre. Clientele were a little older than I would expect for a Lakes hotel. Very good food and service and reasonable prices for wine by the glass. Not a cheap hotel but I would stay again.

The previous reviewer seems a little harsh in that any hotel has terms and conditions so it is not the hotels fault that you choose not to go. It is a very quiet time of year for hotels so not surprising that they were disappointed to lose business.

I only stayed there one night this week but my colleagues stayed longer. We are all workers on the floods so spending most of our time in Cockermouth. I actually turned up at 8am to meet up with some colleagues and the owner told me that I could have a free cooked breakfast on the hotel because of all the work we were doing on floods. This was unexpected and nice gesture. Due to this, I decided to check in there for that night. I did not eat there in evening but all staff were exceptionally friendly at all times.

The room was fine - OK, it is not ultra modern but fine for my needs and it had fantastic views across Derwent Water and Cat Bells. It also had fully working Wi-Fi which was a bonus as I needed to work all evening. Make sure you are in the east side of hotel for best WiFi reception (staff are all aware of best spots).

I am back at floods next week and I will be checking back in to this hotel as quite happy.

My friend and I had booked to stay for 2 nights in November, we had been before and enjoyed it. Because of the appalling weather conditions and the floods in and around the lake district we decided to cancel. We had paid a deposit of £50, however when speaking to the owner/manager she at first insisted that we were liable for the full amount! We obviously disputed this and she eventually agreed. We asked if the deposit could be deferred to a later date when the weather was more clement this was flatly refused and she said we would be removed from the mailing list (in other words we were no longer welcome! We then suggested that the deposit be donated to the rescue fund (this went down like a lead balloon). I ask you, what an attitude! and how shortsighted.
