The Keswick Country House Hotel
Ranked #6 of 17 Hotels in Keswick
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 August 2011

We've stayed here lots of times and always found the service, food and rooms to be excellent. The hotel is in an excellent location if you don't want to be right in the centre of Keswick but want a quiet corner with lovely views and an enormous, beautifully kept garden where you can sit out and enjoy the fresh air. The hotel was the original railway hotel on the line (closed down many years ago!) between Penrith and Cockermouth. Today it is a fantastic walking and cycling facility where you can wander along a well engineered (suitable for pushchairs, wheelchairs and bicycles!), verdant path, crossing the river at several points with stunning views of the fells above. The hotel staff are more than helpful, whatever the situation. The rooms are well appointed and, certainly the ones we have been in the last few times, both budget price or superior rooms, all appear to have been recently refurbished to a high standard. All very clean and co-ordinated, there is a welcome tray with tea/coffee making facilities in the room and the bathrooms are just what you need for a wash 'n brush up after a day on the hills!
Food always has been and still definitely is a HUGE reason for staying here. It's not Michelin star, of course (thank goodness!) but it is SUPERB! The menus are well thought out, cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Wines are reasonably priced for a hotel eg £18 for a very pleasant Australian . Buffet breakfast with a big choice of cereals, fruits, breads and cooked items will really set you up for another Wainwright! I recommend this hotel to lots of our friends. It's great value, whether you choose a standard room or you up grade to a junior suite (wow! great views from here and very spacious rooms!). We'll certainly be back before the end of the year!

Former station hotel in beautiful grounds near the centre of town. Good value for money especially if you opt for inclusive meals. Room large and comfortable. Staff helpful and friendly. Food excellent. House wine Ok and cheap, other wines a bit expensive. Bonuses included putting, croquet and a 10 by 5 billiard table. No traffic noise. Altogether well worth staying at.

We looked for a hotel with charm and character and found it at the Keswick Country House. Yes, it is an older hotel so if you like modern hotels, don’t book here because you will be disappointed. I would also say that the majority of guests were over 50. As other reviewers have stated, some public areas are tired looking and could use a spruce up as could some of the external paintwork. The hotel’s Wi-Fi only worked in the lobby area. Though the hotel does have an elevator, there are small sets of stairs (4-5) around the hotel to navigate.

The hotel staff were all polite and friendly, from the front desk to bellman to housekeeping to the dining room.

Breakfast is a varied buffet of hot and cold food. The restaurant at dinner time is very professional offering a 3 course dinner with a different menu each evening to choose from. The food is of a high standard and well presented. Cloth napkins at dinner would be a nice and elegant touch instead of paper ones. We found it surprising that tea or coffee wasn’t offered as part of the dinner service. Wine list is varied but limited if you are there for several evenings.

Our 3rd Floor Junior Suite (304) was clean and spacious with a gorgeous view.

This hotel is well situated for day trips to different areas around the Lake District, Ullswater, Windermere, Borrowdale Valley, Wast Water, to name just a few!

We thought the hotel to be good value for bed, breakfast and dinner.

Room Tip: If stairs are a problem, ask if your room is on the same level as the elevator.
