The Keswick Country House Hotel

I have just returned from a three night stay at the wonderful Keswick Hotel and would not normally write a review but feel that I need to share this find with others.
The hotel is a lovely old building and granted may be a little tired in some areas but this makes it all the more charming.
Check in was quick and efficient and extremely friendly.
We unfortunately had a slight problem with our accommodation and asked to speak to the manager, she was there in an an instant and sorted out the problem again in a very friendly and efficient manner,
Dinner was absolutely amazing, I think some of the best food we have ever eaten and the service was second to none. Breakfast was equally as good..
There is a ample private parking at this hotel and the grounds are beautiful.
This hotel has staff that other hotels could learn from. They are all equally polite, friendly and efficient and will certainly be the main reason we return to this hotel.
Thank you choice hotels, give your staff a big pat on the back, they deserve it.

Room Tip: Rooms over the gardens are lovely

We stayed here for three nights in a superior room. It was very comfy, but the room needed updating. The food is good, but we couldn't get into the lounge afterwards as my husband is disabled and it was down steps.

Stayed here 20th and 21st June 2012, after coming here for several years we found this to be the first time that we had grumbles. The maid service was bad and when we checked out we noticed that the clean sheets and bedding were all lined up on the floors outside the rooms in the main walking area, and as people have walked outside and picked up god knows what on their shoes, we didn't think this was right. When we suggested that this was not a good health and safety procedure, the receptionist suggested that it was okay as the bedding would be checked before it was put on!! The receptionist went away to ask the manager to talk to us but she was 'In a meeting'.Which is normally the bog standard reply for 'can't be bothered to talk to you'.
Our room wasn't made up on the second day as we had been in our room when the maid knocked so I explained that we would be out in half an hour and I realised the day after that she couldn't speak much English, as I was about to ask her why she had not come back to make up the room, so I ended up changing the towels etc.myself. The service between courses was very slow on the second night and we were told on both mornings that we had arrived at Breakfast in the 'rush hour',when there was no replenished hot buffet. One of the bath handles had been broken, obviously a long time ago.The mattress was extremely hard and lumpy and this was in a Superior King room overlooking the gardens and distant fells, which we paid extra for and we agree this should be the case but not when the other complaints above, spoil it. Come on 'Choice Hotels', we think you are great value for money, and the food is superb but this is the first time we have been disappointed.

Room Tip: The Superior rooms have wonderful views across the fells, its worth paying the extra for.

after having such a busy time with grandchildren we needed to chill out and that we did. The staff were very helpful and polite. We were waited on at dinner time and because we were given times for dinner we only had a short wait til dinner arrived. The food was brilliant we tried meals that we did not have at home and it was all delicious. On the first night we slept like a log the bed was soooo comfortable and big The weather was not good we went to the market and then rested in our room it was very quiet and we read in peace which we are not used to at home. we certainly charged our batteries. Cant wait for next offer to go again. The only downer was the lift not working as I have lung and knee problems I was very breathless and in knee pain but just laid on the comfy bed to recover, the fire alarm went off it is very loud and as I had been fast asleep it did make me panic for a few minutes I wish I had known it was a practise but if it had been for real it would of got me up

Room Tip: it is worth the extra money to get the garden view, if you hav mobility problems check lift working...

We had two nights here. The service was excellent however the hotel is looking a little tired and parking was apalling. The gardens are lovely and the meals were plentiful and beautiful. Probably overpriced for the state of the building and parking facilities. Excellent location though.

We like this hotel because of it's location just on the edge of town and a short walk past the park to the town centre. There's ample parking and the large grounds give it a secluded feeling. It is an old impressive building and the little quirks that go with an old building should be accepted, the sash windows, massive big door ways, odd steps up to some of the rooms etc. it is dated but not scruffy or dirty. The staff are very good and the meals a pleasure, we enjoyed our stay.
Several local walks can be started direct from the hotel our favourite is along the old railway track and then back through the woods alongside the river.

Everything was very good and very reasonable - but why all the supplements? For smoked haddock and kippers at breakfast, coffee and Kendal Mint Cake after dinner, and what appeared to be a 5p extra delivery charge per day for my morning paper? I would rather pay more and do without all these extras!
