“Great place for a getaway”
Reviewed 25 May 2012

We really enjoyed staying at this hotel. Perfect, central location in Keswick for the sights we wanted to see. Nice to have the option to put the car in the car park behind the hotel for free. Friendly, helpful staff and good service - we stayed for five nights so we got to know a little about them every day and they were always ready to stop and say hello. Loved the full Cumbrian breakfast although we thought we were going to pop after the first few mornings so we made use of the healthier options after that!! We also ate in the conservatory some nights and they always had a good variety of tasty, well-presented meals. Nice room - plenty of drawer space, contemporary decor (thankfully they didn't cover everything in flowers) and a nicely updated bathroom. Wi-fi system did not cover all parts of the hotel. Our room was at the back of the hotel and the staff explained to us the limitations of the system but we were able to hook-up in the common parts of the hotel (residents' lounge, lobby, etc). Not the end of the world for our break but this might be frustrating for a business traveller. All in all, a great stay and we would recommend this hotel to others.

Weekend base for cycling weekend.Good location in centre of Keswick.Free car parking directly behind hotel with pass provided. Can be a little noisy late Friday and Saturday night but not enough to stop you sleeping.Staff are very friendly and helpful allowing us to store bikes in conference room and boiler room.Food in restaurant is not very adventurous but decent bar/conservatory food was also good.Stayed twice and both times impressed with staff and would stay again if in Keswick

Room Tip: Rooms at back are quieter

Great location, excellent service from the hotel staff, who were very friendly and helpful. The meals were very good, good selection, excellent quality and quantity. The room was very clean and a good size with a good sized bathroom. As other reviewers have mentioned that the public car park adjacent to the hotel is used by hotel customers, just make sure you don't park overnight under the trees, otherwise you will end up with a very dirty car in the morning.
If the opportunity arises we would stay again.

We spent 2 nights at the Skiddaw after looking for a decent size hotel with a central location for our first family trip. The hotel is slap bang on the high street and has a deal with the adjacent public car park so you can park for free with a pass. On the whole an excellent stay with just a few thoughts.

The first very postive was the booking experience with a really friendly lady telling us we could actually save £10 on the internet rate. We were quoted £15 for a cot bed but got a call back to say this was free of charge. A very good piece of customer service.

We stayed in a summit room and with the deal we got, suspected it would not be one of the refurbished rooms. The room was at the back of the hotel and a great size, so spot on. The decor was a bit tired but very clean and clearly well looked after. It was just what we expected for a very fair price. The downsides were a TV with just terrestial channels and terrible reception. We are not ones to watch the TV but it would have been handy to have a better choice and to be honest a long time since we stayed in a Hotel where not even free view was on offer.

The other strange site was complimentary ear plugs....got me thinking what sort of noise would we get?

We had dinner in the bar area and it was really nice quality food. The bar man from Newcastle in Oz was also very friendly. At all times we were made to feel very welcome with our young son. The breakfast was also very good bar an overcooked poached egg. On day 2 I asked for a runny poached egg and it was perfect...fussy but happy me. The breakfast area was managed very, very well and the staff are a credit to the Hotel. It is obvious the staff care and it showed on a number of occasions.

The only niggle with the stay links to the ear plugs. On a saturday night it can get a bit noisy outside and you can hear the nightclub thuds. I actually think the hotel should come clean about this when you book. It is by no means as bad as it could be given the location but a light sleeper may struggle.

Overall we really liked this place and it is a very good option if you want size, location, parking and food/drink on tap. If you upgrade then the refurbished rooms look nice.

Room Tip: Ask when booking if you want a refurbished room and a quiter room on a saturday

What wonderfully friendly staff. Front front of reception to waiter & waitresses - I thought the service was attentive, low key and friendly.
I took my Dad and Mum and son for Mothers day lunch as my husband had to go abroad last minute with work.
The food was ample, delicous and the service was very good. I have recommended you to friends/family.
When my son's ice-cream came,(in a tall sundae glass) he said quietly, Mummy my spoon isn't long enough (tea spoon). The waiter (local man, sorry can't remember his name) intuitively brought a long sundae spoon without being asked. Good team service/work.

If you are in Keswick, give the restaurant a try, or sit in the lovely conservatory for a drink or afternoon tea (fully recommended too!).

Other hotels should take a note from the service.

We booked in to the skiddaw because we were only in Keswick for one night on a weekend and weren't able to book any of the B&b's we liked. (most had min 2 night booking).

I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. The staff member we dealth with was excellent on check in and later at the bar/bistro. I wish I could remember her name.

The room had a lovely view. We were on the top floor. Thank goodness there was a lift we could take our luggage up in!

The supplied ear plugs were an ominous sign. I wore mine and had a great night sleep. My partner didn't and found there was lots of street noise and the sliding door opposite our room banged a few times from other guests. This could probably be fixed. The hotel is in a great location for exploring the village.

I would stay here again if on a short trip.

Good central location in Keswick convenient for shops and the market, a short walk to the lake. Our 2 day break through Travelzoo was excellent value for money included afternoon tea, dinner first night, £10 off following night and bottle of wine in the room. Nice touch that. We found the hotel staff to be fine on the whole except the bar staff who were slightly on the surly side. Bar prices were expensive. Our room was on the back of the hotel, particularly requested because I'd read the reports about the noisy street. I think the rooms at the front were probably bigger, but we were quite happy with ours as it was beautifully clean and had a fabulous new bathroom. Parking was on the local public car park, with a free pass given by reception. The system worked well. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, especially as part of the Travelzoo offer.

Room Tip: If noise is a problem go for smaller room at the back
