“Tired & Dated, Nothing Out Of The Ordinary”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 October 2012

we stayed as a couple on the 'Secret Escapes' deal for 2 nights which included an evening meal on the first night. We asked in advance for a quiet room & were given a room on the top (3rd) floor at the rear. This was not one of the refurbished rooms & was tiny but with an enormous bathroom. The room was quiet but we could still hear some noise from the adjoining night club in the early hours - apparently the night club is also owned by the hotel owner!

The evening meal was very dissapointing; bland, poor selection, the dish of vegetables was embarrasing - mashed swede, cabbage, mashed & new potatoes (despite having ordered chips). It was like school dinners but without the irony. Breakfast was similarly dissapointing - not cooked to order, definately not local ingredients and left under hot lamps until superheated.

If we had been paying full price rather than being on a deal i would have left after the first night. Even at half price (over £260) for 2 nights it was way overpriced for the level of amenities & service

The best thing the hotel has going for it is the location, right in the middle of Keswick but thats about it.

In the area for a few days. Had dinner one evening in Restaurant 31 at Skiddaw hotel. Dreadful bumbling service. We were advised items ordered not available until having waited an age. Orders finally arrived but with entirely the wrong side dishes. Not a pepper mill available in the whole place apparently! When the Bill arrived we had to point out we had been overcharged. The £5.00 offered off the bill did not make much in the way of amends for such a dreadful experience.

Four of us - on a TravelZoo deal which included all meals, a packed lunch on one day and a bottle of wine on leaving - stayed in two spacious, tastefully kitted out rooms at the back of the hotel with very large, comfortable beds. The baths filled up quickly with water as hot as you could wish for at the end of a (wet as it so happened) day's walking, and a hot towel rail kept towels luxuriously warm. Complimentary dressing gowns were also provided.

The dinner menu of 5 courses (soup and coffee being two) gave plenty of choice for non-vegetarians; all our hot meals were tasty and enjoyable though the cold meat and cheese platter was disappointing in its lack of variety of meats - mostly cold beef though plenty of it - and there was one pile of grated cheese only. We also were able to order moderately well-priced red and white wines. Breakfast choices were varied and the food freshly cooked.

All the staff were friendly and helpful. For example, when we returned from a walk dripping wet, the receptionist took us to a drying off room where we could leave our wet gear.

Other reviewers have commented on the excellent location, and our experience was one we all four would be very pleased to repeat.

The Skiddaw is in a great location. Right in the centre of Beautiful Keswick. The staff were very friendly and the hotel itself was very well decorated. We booked this trip through Secret Escapes so the package was for 2 nights in a Summit room with a 3-course dinner one night and breakfast both mornings. The room was very well decorated although was not very big. If we were staying for longer than 2 nights there would have been a problem with space but it was fine for us. The meal was very nice with good choice and the staff certainly looked after us. We went to the bar for a short time after and the staff were just as nice and attentive there too. We didn't stay long as the plan was to get up early and go walking. Our room was on first floor (8) and as we discovered overlooked the courtyard and the nightclub. It was very noisy loud music until late (approx. 1am) so I did have difficulty sleeping and we ended up getting up late due to lack of sleep. We went down to a wonderful breakfast and then went to reception and asked about the noise. We were informed that the nightclub would be going on until 3am on a Saturday night and, without us even asking, the receptionist said she would check availability for another room. The only room available was a family suite on the top floor. It was a lower grade room but we decided sleep was more important. We then went walking for the day and on our return the staff had moved our belongings for us. On getting to the room, we were very pleasantly surprised. It was a 2 bedroom suite and very large. The quality of the room, considering it was classed as a basic, was very good. It was very large, clean and very quiet. I must admit the decoration was a little dated but still pleasant. I would definitely recommend this hotel but, if you need sleep ask for a room away from the nightclub on a weekend.

Room Tip: Ask for something away from nightclub if you like peace and quiet over the weekend

I have always thought that this is a great hotel - great staff, good food, central location, very clean and so on, and I stand by all of that. However, as with my last visit I felt let down by the room itself. It was a deluxe room but had the decor and quality of a standard. I can live the decor as this is not everything when you consider all of the other things the hotel is great for, plus I know they're slowly refurbishing all of the rooms. However, for the price we paid (and compared to what I pay for other hotels with comparable locations) this was not a deluxe room - BBC channels didn't work on the tv at all (note to the management - I forgot to mention this when I checked out, apologies), the water pressure was just okay, the shower head wouldn't stay in position, there was no iron (which I think there should be in deluxe rooms), the bath took forever to run, the curtains were fraying (although that's back to decor I suppose) and so on.

If this was a standard room and somewhat cheaper I wouldn't have complained as I think, as with the hotel overall, they are good rooms and they are clean with really comfy and large beds etc. It's the value for money that's my issue this time.

I won't stay at the Skiddaw again but don't let this put you off, go and make your own decision but choose your room wisely.

Just had 2 nights at the Skiddaw Hotel with my 22 year old daughter. The hotel room, food, service and staff could not be faulted in any way. We had a room at the back so did not have any noise from the market being set up on Saturday morning or from the people out in the town square on Saturday night. The pubs around the square were really busy all evening and the general atmosphere of the town was great.

The evening meal in the hotel was excellent and really substantial with a good choice of starters, main course and dessert. The breakfasts were also excellent.

The room was not massive but very tastefully decorated and the bathroom was as new; towels were changed each day and the bath towels were really large. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided and are replenished each day. There is a hairdryer provided.

If there is no room for parking round the back of the hotel, (there are only about 5 places) then the car park is available just across and the hotel provides a pass to put in the car window but this MUST be returned before leaving or you will be charged a great deal.

The location of the hotel could not be better, there are shops, pubs, restaurants, fish and chip shops, supermarkets all around the area. The lake is a short walk, (or drive) along the road and the scenery around is magnificent.

I think the hotel would be wonderful at Christmas/New Year as it already has a warm, welcoming atmosphere and the staff were all really friendly and helpful. Thank you so much!

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the hotel are much quieter than the front as there is noise from the town squar...
