“Pleasant room, good value, some issues.”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

We had a four-poster room which was very comfortable and a good size.

We were there on one of the hottest days of the year so far, so the room was very hot. We had taken our own fan, but fans were available from reception on request - but be quick as there aren't enough for every room which is why they aren't in the rooms as standard or advertised as being available. We had the window open to allow some fresh air to circulate, but the pub next door was quite noisy. the noise stopped at about 11pm but then kicked off again about 2am. Apparently there is a nightclub there, which is why the hotel has installed triple-glazing. With the window closed, it was fine, but obviously we would have preferred to keep the window open due to the heat!

It was difficult to find the car park. Follow signs for Central Parking. This car park is to the rear of the hotel. You don't need to pay, but you do need to fetch a voucher from the hotel to display in the car. If you're on your own, hopefully you won't get a ticket whilst fetching the voucher! If worried, there is a very small space at the rear of the hotel you can use for a few minutes. You also have to return the voucher on leaving or risk being charged £100 for it.

We decided to take the table d'hote offer, based on the menu displayed in reception, only to find the menu was for the day before. However, the choice was acceptable, if a little unimaginative.

The hotel has a very old-fashioned lift with sliding metal gate door. Not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not suitable for children to use unaccompanied. Watch your fingers!

However, a very good location looking out over the town centre and market-place and ideal for exploring the town.

Dear Mark F

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and hope the rest of your trip was enjoyable too. As you mentioned it was very hot during your visit which is great but unfortunately not such a regular occurance. The hotel's excellent location in the centre of town does mean that there is occasionally some outside noise and hence the triple glazing.

Our lift is certainly a feature and (touch wood) as reliable as any modern lift. I hope you have the opportunity of visting the Lakes again and staying with us again.

Kind regards
Neels

My husband and I stayed here in February for a couple of nights and had a great time. Arriving quite late on the first night we were delighted to find that we could still have a meal in the hotel, as we were very tired. The food was delicious and the staff were so friendly and helpful. In the morning we had breakfast and we both really enjoyed it. We normally like to try different places to eat when on holiday but we were tired from a busy day in the Lakes and as we enjoyed our visit to the restaurant the night before, we opted to eat in the hotel again - excellent choice as it was all lovely. We went out for a few drinks in another local bar (it's on a main street so close to lots of other stuff) then went back to the hotel bar, where we borrowed a pack of cards. The bar staff, like the reception and restaurant staff were brilliant. Near closing time a member of staff let us know that although the bar was closing we would be able to make use of the (very comfortable) resident's lounge, which was great because we were able to buy a bottle of wine and just drink it there. It's not the Ritz but it was very reasonably priced, very clean and comfortable, and the staff were great so we would definately stay here again if we went back to the Lakes.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Skiddaw Hotel in the centre of Keswick. It took a little finding by SatNav as it is situated on the pedestrianised zone. But once we'd found the back entrance and parking area everything turned out fine. Although it is quite and old hotel it had a lift (someone said it pre-dated the hotel - but worked fine), which my wife appreciated. Our room was comfortable, and the en-suite was first class (I suspect that it has been refurbished recently). Breakfast and dinner were first class too. Staff were friendly and welcoming. It would have been nice to stay longer.

Dear Mr Owens-Woodall

Thank you very much for your lovely review of your stay at The Skiddaw Hotel. As much as you wish you could stay longer, we would also love you to stay with us again and hopefully it will not be long before you can. The pedestrianisation (if that is a word) of the main street has been brilliant for Keswick and especially for The Skiddaw, apart from for SatNav users. The Central Carpark is the one right behind the hotel and it's postcode is CA12 5DF, this might help for your next visit.

Kind regards

Monday 15th July, four of us called in for lunch. It was a beautiful day but the hotel did not seem overly busy.
1. Three plates arrived at the same time. All of the plates were blisteringly hot and when we mentioned this to the waitress she informed us that they were always served this way. The plates were far hotter than any we have had in any other restaurants and I would consider them to be a danger to both servers and customers alike.
2. Two of the party ordered pork fillet with an onion chutney - it was obvious that the plates had been left under a heat lamp and the chutney was dried out. The waitress did not offer any apology and said this was the way it was always served - what may be their standard practice is not necessiraly right. We asked for a separate dish of relish which was supplied and was of an acceptable standard.
3. The fourth dish arrived quite some time after the previous three and there was no apology given for this.
4. We thought the meals to be overpriced for the quality and service.
Some suppliers in tourist areas may believe they can get away with anything as the majority of customer will be from out of the area and unlikely to return. Two of us were locals and two from out of the area and none of us will recommend the Skiddaw to anyone.

Dear Sir/Madam

I hope you enjoyed your visit to the beautiful Lake District. I thank you for your feedback regarding your meal here. I must confess that it is our policy to serve hot food on hot plates and is something I am reluctant to change. It should obviously not be so hot that it burns. The waitress that served you carried the 3 plates from the kitchen and after your request for relish fetched that straight away and then fetched the other meal. I apologise if this was too slow.

We always encourage our staff to engage with our guests as much as possible and as such she did try to courteously mention that we purposely have hot plates etc. Fortunately the majority of our customers are local to Keswick and the surrounding area and we rely mainly on repeat trade, which is why our high service levels are so important. I am sorry you didn't feel this was the case.

Kind regards

Stayed here twice now while on business. Just the ticket with excellent, helpful staff the hotel is spotlessly clean. Breakfast if very good and it is in the best location. Free parking is a welcome bonus.

Would recommend staying here.

Just returned from a short break at the Skiddaw Hotel, Keswick and from our experience I would certainly rate this as one of the best hotels my wife and I have stayed in. This is based on the following:
Location - Town centre but with fantastic walks only minutes away
Facilities - very clean and comfortable with everything you could ask for in a room. Access to complimentary leisure facilities at the nearby Lodore Falls Hotel. We didn’t have time to use these on this visit but we have in the past and they are worth taking advantage of. (Pool, hot tub etc)
Food – Great breakfast but we were also tempted by the evening menu and had an excellent 4 course dinner. (We initially only booked in for B&B)
Staff – probably the best thing about the hotel. Nothing was too much trouble, all staff were professional, polite and friendly and made our stay memorable. Particular emphasis on the young lady from New Zealand who looked after us in the restaurant. A credit to the Hotel and her profession. (Apologies we didn’t get her name)
We hope to return in the future, time and finance permitting

Room Tip: Rooms to the rear will be quieter as they are away from the main street but based on experience beli...

Stayed 2 nights Fri and Sat in a room on the second floor overlooking Main Street. The location is great, with handy car parking at the rear of the hotel in the central car park. A free pass is available from the hotel reception. The hotel is clean and is typically an old fashioned english hotel. The front of house staff were pleasant. Breakfast is ok. The room was fine with a large spotless bathroom. The one drawback of the room that we were in, was that there is no air con, and being the summer the windows need to be open. On Saturday morning there is a quaint market, and they start building this at 06.00, not a major problem. Not a bad place to base your self for the lakes

Dear Sir/Madam

Thank you for taking the time to post a response.
I realise that with the hotel being ideally located in the centre of Keswick we can have noise from the market square and have installed secondary glazing to the rooms that overlook it. When we are blessed with such lovely weather it does mean the windows are often opened to cool down, thus negating the glazing. I take it from your comments that you would also rather the good weather and having to open the windows.

I am very glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Kind regards
