“Fabulous stay at the Howe Keld”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 January 2014

We stayed at the Howe Keld on the 30th Dec for 3 nights. We had one of the smallest bedroom (N°12) but it feld very cosy and we loved it. Valerie and David are the kindest people you could wish for and they gave us loads of advice and information on the area, always had a little attention for us or a word, never being invasive, we knew if needed we could ask them anything. The B&B is so relaxing, everything is thought towards a green spirit and nature, and the atmosphere is relaxing, cosy, we felt like at home. The breakfast was fab, we decided each night before what we wanted for the morning, and we loved the big choice on offer, just what we needed to get started for the day!
I hope we will come back to the Lake district some day and it will be at the Howe Keld as it met all our expectations, absoluty perfect! We miss our relaxing time there a lot (not to mention the breathtaking landscapes!), thank you!! Lily and Pierre.

Very clean, great shower, comfortable rooms which were nicely styled, good breakfast, location within walking distance of Keswick and free parking outside in winter, owners also helpful. However,as it is badged as a B&B we thought it would be more relaxed, less formal and more cosy. Also whilst location is convenient the outlook isn't attractive. Seems like a harsh review as quality very good just not what we were expecting.

Thank you for the kind comments you have made.

We are sorry some of your expectations were not met, however we feel we should correct an important inaccuracy. You say that you chose to stay at Howe Keld because it is badged as a B&B. The inspecting organisations classify a B&B as offering accommodation to 6 or fewer paying guests usually in the owners house. Howe Keld has never been classified as a B&B. It carries the designator Guest Accommodation and one look at our website would reveal its true colours - a thoroughly modern and tasteful 14 Bedroom Guest House!

Over the last 20 years Val and I have striven to provide professional and warm service without being intrusive or over familiar. Perhaps we are not able to offer the same kind of intimate experience you wanted from a small B&B where, for example, you might have shared a breakfast table in the morning but the fact that your expectations were not met in this respect is not the fault of Howe Keld. You should have read our website carefully where we have gone to great lengths to be transparent so that our guests' expectations will be met when they stay.

In spite of how you describe Howe Keld's location it is actually in a great position on the Lakeside of the town centre - it may not be a rural location but where is in the town of Keswick? Visitors stay in Keswick because it is a superb and attractive Lake District Centre with all conveniences within walking distance, including the Fells and Lake Derwentwater. The Lakeland stone frontage of Howe Keld is even part of a Conservation area.

To be fair you say your review is harsh and of course we agree! No one wins when expectations aren't met including Howe Keld whose position in the listings will inevitably suffer because of an unfair review. All we ask is that you judge Howe Keld for what it is and not for what you incorrectly believed it was going to be.

A wonderful stay at Howe Keld. It is in a great location with beautiful views.

I was on a business trip and stayed in the Junior Suite which was lovely - really spacious with a large (v comfortable!) bed, sofa, desk etc. The little touches were great - I had a small hallway with coat pegs, and in the wardrobe there was a tray you could put your shoes on. It was a good space to work in and I like the fact I could angle the TV towards the sofa or bed - it made it feel more like a mini apartment than just a hotel room. Mint chocolates were on the pillow when I arrived and there was filtered water and a good selection of hot drinks. The bathroom in the Junior Suite was amazing - separate bath and shower and beautiful wood flooring.

I arrived late (about 10pm) but still had a very warm welcome and the breakfast was delicious. There were very high winds during my stay and my room was very cold the first night (probably not helped by my late arrival) but my hosts put a lot of effort with additional radiators to make sure my second night was more comfortable.

A lovely place to stay - highly recommended.

Room Tip: Loved the Junior Suite - v spacious.

We have just returned from our second stay at Howe Keld and I cannot praise it enough. David and Valerie are perfect hosts and everything is so clean, modern and welcoming. The beds are very comfortable and all the rooms tastefully decorated. The breakfasts are simply the best and my husband is addicted to the porridge here - the most delicious he has ever tasted!

We will return asap and hopefully for a longer period of time.
Many thanks
Janet and Martin

Just returned! Room clean and modern with lovely decor. Breakfast was yummy, wish I had had the Cumbrian though looked incredible. Ideal location for the town which is also very very beautiful (you must visit the chocolate shop!) staff were very friendly and pleasant. Returning in February!

Fantastic location: just a short walk to the lake
Extremely comfortable room with top quality everything, comfortable bed, powerful shower, etc.
Great choices for breakfast and all delicious.
A "library" full of useful info.
Recommendations for restaurants.
So, could anything be improved? Well, for us, a longer/later time for breakfast, although it did get us up and out!. Parking was fine in November but must be difficult in the high season.
Otherwise it's a pretty perfect place to stay.

Room Tip: Face "The Heads" - there's a fantasic view.

We have just returned from our third visit to Howe Keld, and it remains as good as ever. This time we stayed in Room 11 and it was lovely. Very welcoming and cosy, although it was even bigger than the room we had previously. The bathroom was also a little larger. The room was on the second floor, and had the same lovely views of the western mountains.

Too many good points to list, but those that stand out are the wonderfully comfortable bed, the fantastic power shower and the breakfasts. The whole guesthouse is immaculate.

There is no doubt that we will be back. There may well be other very good guest houses in Keswick but we have no wish to try them. We have found our perfect getaway in the Northen Lakes!
