“A nice place to stay!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2008

Stayed in one of the attic rooms which had a spa bath, great after a long day. It is up 6 flights of stairs so be warned! Very good location right in keswick. The room was comfortable and had a lovely view. Breakfast was ordered the night before which I can't say I had a problem with and we requested a couple of changes to the menu which wasn't a problem at all. The thing that stood out to us was the cleanliness of the place, it was spotless which for such a large house was impressive.
The only slight downside was the check in and out times which is why I have given four stars, rooms are only available after 4pm which we felt was quite late and we had to check out by 10.15am which is pretty early.

I travelled with my mom and sister and I have no complaints with the rooms except the bed was not that great. For a 4 star establishment, I was suprised to feel the springs in the mattress dig into my back. Though, it was clean and very convenient that the proprietors provide a free parking chit considering they are located downtown.

Another complaint was with breakfast. The hotel was so full that there were not enough seats in the breakfast room to accomodate everyone properly. There was only one table for more than 2 people and it was a bit squishy. My sister had to sit separately and have her breakfast by herself and we weren't the only party that had to split up. As well, my mom was very disappointed with her tea as the water was luke warm and there wasn't any good regular tea to choose from. She ended up taking her toast upstairs and boiled her own cup of tea in her room with the kettle provided.

We also had to wait quite a bit for them to brew more coffee when there was an extra burner that could easily have been used by having more than one carafe. When finally someone asked for more coffee, the woman serving asked for the people who were sitting closest to the coffee pot to get up in the middle of their breakfast and pass it to her. Normally, I would not make a big deal over this but for a 4 star rating, I thought it was a bit tacky.

I also found it quite harsh reading the book of rules in the bedroom. I know in order to keep everything running smoothly that there needs to be a good set of rules but the tone was very unforgiving and they warned charges for everything. It just didn't feel very hospitable.

Again we are really sad to hear the comments from this particular guest. We strive to give our guests a pleasant experience and on the whole we succeed as our levels of repeat trade and recommendations are very high. In our 'book of rules' as this guest says, we have no rules at all stipulating anything in this book, just advice on how to make the most of your trip and a little about us, hoping that you see how friendly we are. Indeed we state in it 'It is of the upmost importance to us that you enjoy your stay with us so if there is something that is not to your satisfaction, no matter how large or small it may be, please advise us and we will do all that we can to rectify it'. Not on one occasion did this guest say anything. On check out we ask each and every guest if everything was ok. Again nothing was said. Why would they not advise us but write something like this on tripadvisor? We put our heart and soul into our work and care passionately about the experiences our customers.
Unfortunately, due to people putting hot irons and hair straighteners on the carpets and burning a hole in them over the past 3 years, we have terms and conditions on our registration form that each guest has to sign to say that they have read and accept. We have done this through the advice of Cumbria Tourism and have indeed used their templet. This is to cover ourselves for any damage caused to our property. I'm sure that most individuals reading this would do the same if they were in our situation. We also advise on it that if people advise us of damage, in most cases we will not charge. I must stress that this is due to one or two individuals who have no regard for peoples property and to simply protect ourselves legally. If we do not have terms and conditions stating damage must be paid for, we cannot claim against individuals for any damage caused in the event of carelessness. This is where the law stands and we have been forced to do this due to experiences over the past 3 years.

Regarding our dining room, we have 18 chairs and nine tables, comprising 2 chairs per each table. We have 9 bedrooms, each accommodating 2 people.

Our coffee machine is on the counter with the cereals and fruit juices etc. There is no table blocking it. We certainly would never ask a guest to get up and pass us the coffee. This is simply untrue and quite frankly insulting to insinuate this. We have a minimum of 10 varieties of teas on offer for guest to help themselves to. This includes 2 options of traditional teas, one such as PG tips or Tetley and the other is Farrers special blend. If our guests from overseas who are not familiar with our teas are unsure, please ask and we will advise. We are sorry that there seemed a problem with the luke warm water. Why wouldn't the guest advise us and we would change it? We are extremely approachable and again find it insulting that we are accused of this. How many establishments offer such a wide variety of teas? We do not ration them, guests can have as many of them as they wish and they are on offer 24 hours a day.

I must also add that we are a guest house offering bed and breakfast accommodation. We are not a Hotel. We are called Ravensworth House, having changed our name from Ravensworth Hotel over a year ago.
We are not a 4 Star hotel. We are graded by Visit Britain as 4 Star Guest Accommodation. This is not to be confused with a 4 Star Hotel.
If people took time to understand the rating system, they would realise what is expected from a 4 Star Guest Accommodation establishent. We have the Silver Award as recognition for our enhanced quality. Our tariff is reflective and in line with 4 Star Guest Accommodation and not that of a 4 Star Hotel.

Stayed at The Ravensworth whilst visiting the Lakes for a wedding. The room was good and the breakfast in the conservatory was great. As B & B's/ small hotels go I'd definately recommend it for weekend break.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Keswick. We feel very fortunate to have stayed at the Ravensworth House with Jason and Alison and their adorable son's James and Oliver. We arrived in the evening and was met by the owner, Jason , who was extremely pleasant and a pleasure to meet , he very kindly carried our luggage up to our room and explained to us what we had to do to order breakfast the following morning. Our room was immaculate and it was plain to see that a lot of thought and hard work had gone into customer satisfaction.
We ordered breakfast for 8-30am and what a breakfast it was , I have never, ever, tasted one like it , it was truly delicious. It was served by Alison who went out of her way to make sure we were both happy with everything, she informed us that Jason cooked everything himself and he told us how important it is to them both that they serve only the best local produce.
We truly adored our stay at the Ravensworth , it had everything and more we could have wished for , the only thing was , we could'nt stay longer than a week , needless to say we have booked to go back in August for two weeks

First class Hotel with very high standards from Hoteliers Jason and Alison who’s cleanliness, services, food etc is all second to none. Superb surroundings and location dead in the centre of Keswick. Both Jason and Alison advised my partner and me where to eat and visit - of which both were great! Take no notice of poor reviews regarding reservations - must be some stuck up toff, you get them everywhere! We had no problems what so ever and will be in touch to book during the summer time.

My wife and I are intending to walk the Cumbrian Way over the Easter period and had successfully reserved accommodation in Ulverston, Conistion, Dungeon Ghyll and Caldbeck.
We also had a telephone booking for the Ravensworth Hotel, made last October.
This week we received a call from the Hotel saying they had not realised the booking was for the Easter period and, as they have a minimum 3-night policy, they were cancelling the reservation.
There was no apology.
All very disappointing , inconvenient and unprofessional.

  • Liked — It looked very nice on the web site.
  • Disliked — They cancelled the booking because of their own error.
