“Thoroughly enjoyable stay”
Reviewed 11 May 2014 via mobile

We recently had a two night stay in the Derwent Water room, following a recommendation from a good friend and we were not disappointed. All the boxes are ticked here; great accessible location in the centre of Keswick; free parking; friendly and helpful hosts; comfortable room furnished to a high standard (we loved the cuddler!); and a cracking breakfast.

Highly recommended, keep up the great work. Thanks for your hospitality.

Our stay at Ravensworth B&B couldn't have been more romantic. We stayed in the four poster bed suite with a snuggle seat and bubble bath. The location couldn't have been better to explore the restaurants and markets of Keswick as well as serving as an excellent base for climbing local mountains. The view from our window was fabulous and the hosts were very friendly and accommodating. The breakfasts were of high standard complete with juice, coffee and tea, cereals, yogurts, fruits and of course, the sacred English! Healthy option also available! We love Keswick and would most definitely return to this B&B to enjoy the facilities of the room and view again.

Room Tip: We loved this room for the comfort, space, snuggle seat (spinny chair for two!), view from the windo...

Just spent three nights at Ravensworth House.

Good points ....... location is great for exploring the area. Breakfast was lovely. Hotel was very clean & despite being on busy street we were not disturbed by any noise. Parking right near hotel, free on a permit. Owners were very helpful & friendly.

Not so good points ...... We stayed in Walla Crag the room at top of guest house. Very small room, with sloping ceiling, which was pointed out before I booked the room, but still surprised by size. Spa bath was very small and on both day two & three of our stay the towels were not replaced within our bathroom, the already wet one's were just put back on the towel rail, still wet when we returned from day out! The room was also quite cold as the radiator did not get hot all over, only on one end.

All in all a good stay, just a couple of small niggles.

Room Tip: Derwent Suite looked spacious.

We are sorry that you felt our room is only average in this instance. During the number of telephone calls that we had from you during the day of your booking, we made in clear to you that the room had a sloping ceiling and advised you that you could see our 360 degree images of each room on our website. You had the choice of 3 rooms, Buttermere, Latrigg and Walla Crag and on looking at the images on our website, you called back to book the Walla Crag room. We sincerely apologise that you were unhappy with it but we feel strongly that our images show the good and bad points to each and every one of our rooms.

We are also surprised by your review as your partner said to Jason that we had a 'beautiful place here' and that the room was very nice when we talked at the bottom of the stairs and Jason was offering you advice on where to go that day so why would you say such of a thing face to face and then get home and write something contrary to this?

We are also very sorry that you chose to smoke in the bedroom. Sadly we do have people from time to time who have so little regard to our property and although illegal to do so, choose to smoke in their bedroom, compromising the Fire Safety of our business. We are also sorry for the damage that you caused to our window sill from the falling cigarette ash.

As a result of this, the charge to you of £100 to clean the room has probably been the main factor of 'getting your own back' at us by writing something negative when, face to face, you were anything other than very pleasant to us and complimentary.

We take great pride in our home and business and wish for other guests to enjoy their stay with us but also have the same respect for our property as they would their own.

We can certainly do without people like yourselves staying with us and make no apologies at all for saying that we would not want you back.

The reply from the owner below is a little unprofessional and in some cases untrue. It does appear they are more concerned with attaining their environmental award than their customers, which they seem to class as careless, wasteful and in need of educating.

I would think most people would prefer to give constructive feedback later, once they have reflected on their stay, rather than face to face at departure and yes, you can’t address some problems until you’re made aware of them but things like blown light bulbs and trim hanging loose from the bed are easy enough to spot.

The comment regarding ordering a full breakfast and then leaving half, on both days, is completely untrue. As for ordering the maximum, what was there to leave from one sausage, one egg (yes on one day one of the party actually asked for two but both were eaten), two slices of bacon, some beans and a tomato? If we were as wasteful as described surely we would have gone to town on the buffet selection too, of which we had none. We probably ate less and left less than anyone else there. I hope this was a genuine mistake on behalf of the owners. Either way I’m not sure commenting on guests breakfast habits on Trip Advisor is the most professional way to approach the issue. Maybe it would have been better to check if the guests were feeling ok or if something was wrong with the breakfast, if they did indeed leave over half of it on both days. Which makes you wonder why this wasn’t mentioned face to face, only later from behind a computer screen, touché.

If you were thinking of staying here I would read some of the replies left by the owners to what are mostly small critiques, you may then get an idea of what to expect.

Oh dear, we seem to be getting it from both barrels! Firstly your partner and now you! We are genuinely sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us, we honestly feel that we gave you exactly the same service that we give everyone else but for some reason you feel aggrieved with us.

I am sorry that in this particular review you chose not to mention the email that you sent us apologising to us for having some errors in your review (such as the check in and how we couldn't show you to your room) but we 100% stand by the facts of my initial reply to you partner.

Hopefully now that you have both given your views, you will leave us in peace. We genuinely wish you a very pleasant stay in Keswick the next time that you are visiting the town.

Tripadvisor is a great forum and should be wholely embraced. However it can be a dangerous concept for businesses and we hope that people writing a review, whether it be good or bad do so in a truthful and correct manor and hopefully think of the potential impact it may have on a business.

As we never ask or encourage anyone to write a review (as with other establishments) we thank all people who choose to review us.

We enjoyed our stay in the B&B and I am writing this review in comparison to the very high standard of B&B’s we have stayed in Keswick. Ok the positives were the spa bath and spinning lounge chair (bit of a novelty but fun) and large room and good breakfast. Great location, although main road, so if you are a light sleeper take your ear plugs. They offered wine at cheap prices, but there was no communal fridge to store food if you were making your own lunches.

Unfortunately, for me, there was something missing from this B&B and I can’t only describe this as “soul”. The welcome that was more about “do’s and don’ts” & lacked the personal touch, I would have preferred to be shown our room (we may have had a long drive?) and then to go through the terms and conditions. I got the distinct impression that we were just another couple to pass through the doors and perhaps that has hampered this review, but it felt very impersonal and if we had wanted this approach we would have stayed in a hotel.

The rooms were clean, but the décor was uninspiring and dull, it’s personal choice, but perhaps suited to the older generation. There were instructions/terms and conditions on laminated pieces of paper and picture frames with instructions on various things, I would much rather have one guest book with all the information in, rather than finding printed notes on towel usage on my bed every day, just killed the romance of the place. Paying £5 for fresh towels if you want them changed more often than 3 days I thought was a commercial step too far, most of us who stay in Keswick are big enough and old enough to understand sustainability and the need to recycle and minimise waste. It felt a bit like I was being schooled in this with the threat of charges. This is the first I have seen of this, most B&B’s politely request that you use them until dirty and help save the environment.

There were a few maintenance issues, a bathroom caddy that would not stay on the wall if you put too much in it, but the cracked panel on the spa bath could have been replaced relatively cheaply and for £106 a night, I expect a bit more upkeep, it just felt a bit unloved. The room desperately cried out for hooks on the back of doors, little things, but more thought needed.

The breakfast was good, but I am not a fan of self service and I want to be asked if I want more toast than having to request it, I want a little conversation, a little interest in us, just little things but these are what set the “best” apart from the “good”.

Maybe I have been spoilt by some of the best B&B‘s in Keswick, but I hope the owners find this constructive and helpful.

Many thanks for taking the time to write your review, we appreciate all of your comments, take them on board and will act to improve on the service that we provide.

We are sorry that you felt our service was impersonal. Our other reviews would tend to state how our levels of service were what made for a pleasant stay so I'm disappointed that you felt this was not the case.

Upon your arrival early morning, we were unable to show you to your room as it wasn't ready. If I remember correctly, whilst Alison went into the office to get you a car parking permit I came out of a guest bedroom to greet you both and asked if you had travelled far and had a good journey in which your reply was 'Ullswater'. As your room wasn't ready, we asked for you to bring your luggage into the dining room and we would take it to your room when it was ready and we did that. I tried on several occasions to talk to you but you were always in a hurry passing me going out so it was difficult to get to chat.

I do remember you being very nice to my face when you checked out and when I asked you if everything was ok with your stay and you said that you had had a lovely time so maybe you feel more comfortable behind a computer screen in the comfort of your home to give your opinion.

We are glad that you enjoyed our breakfast, it is something that we put a lot of thought into. As was the provision of your gluten free sausages and gluten free bread. As we provided you with the gluten free toast, we are sorry that we didn't get to you in time to ask you if you wanted more and apologise if you were disappointed with this, with the greatest of respect, we were full and sometimes with 16 or 18 guests in a dining room it isn't possible to deal with them all at once, particularly if they come down around the same time. From our point of view we are sorry that you decided to order the full breakfast and not manage to eat it all, having to throw nearly half of it in the bin both mornings, maybe as you claim that you are 'big enough and old enough' you would have simply ordered what you could eat instead of ordering the maximum you could.

Our towel policy was introduced a couple of years ago as we were sadly forced to do this as we had many guests take make up off or wipe their shoes with them and throw them on the floor after the first night resulting in us having to throw towels away. With the greatest of respect, would they do it at home with their own towels? We would love for people to be 'big enough and old enough' as you say but unfortunately in the real world that we live people don't and again with the greatest of respect, we have to have some rules to protect ourselves from the odd instance when people do not respect our property.

We would genuinely love not to do it. We would also like our guests to not go out for the night and leave the television on or the bedroom lights on or the bathroom lights on or even the shower running when they go out for the night but sadly this happens to us and maybe with a little experience in the trade, you would understand why we ask our guests to turn the lights out with our laminated sheet (of which there is only 1). Call me strict if you wish but I feel that this is just careless and a needless waste of electricity and again, the customer would be unlikely to do this at home with their own electricity. The laminated sheet isn't rules but simply advising guests to help us achieve an environmental award that we are aiming for, we cannot achieve this without the co-operation of our guests.

I am pleased that you read our guest information book, sadly 90% of our guests don't so we feel putting our environmental goal in the book would be a waste of time.

We thank you for pointing out the need for extra storage in the bathroom, we will act upon this and we always say, if people don't say anything to us then we can't act upon it. Unfortunately we are currently unable to replace the bath panel as they do not make that contour of panel any more. However, it is always clean but it is something that we are looking to replace if and when we find a suitable replacement. Sadly the panel was broken by a previous guest, someone who wasn't 'big enough and old enough' to respect our property.

We hope that you enjoy your next visit to Keswick, the other businesses that you have previously reviewed and stayed at are indeed fine businesses and we are pleased to have them in our town as they bring the standard of guest houses up in the town. They do however have significantly less rooms than ourselves and can offer things that we cannot at times as their overheads are probably much lower than ours.

I've stayed in many hotels & B&Bs in Keswick and this one is wonderful. We literally booked last-minute (very late the night before) and the room we had was perfect: lovely and clean and well presented with everything you could need. The breakfasts are great with lots of choice, and delicious! The Ravensworth is in the centre of Keswick, so is handy for local amenities, yet just away from the main streets so you can still get a good night's sleep without the worry of any outside noise. Our hosts,Jason & Alison, were most welcoming, friendly and very helpful - they recommended some fabulous walks and lent us maps and gave us lots of tips on the best routes, as well as ideas for the best places to eat and drink. All in all, a fabulous stay in what is probably my favourite UK town.
