Park in the farmers car park at Hause gate junction £3 for safe parking. great introduction to the fells with breathtaking views. The mountain at times is very popular so don't look for solitude on this one

“A walk for the family”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Not being the fittest of families, we decided to try out Catbells. The ascent got the heart pumping well and a few stops to admire the views were required. A few rocky places to climb and scramble up, but actually that added to the fun. As with most hills, the top that you first see isn't necessary the top and so after another climb we made it. The views were stunning, of Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite, Newlands Valley. We even were able to watch a rescue helicopter on training while we had lunch. Definitely one to try!! The guidebook said it could be done in 2.5-3hrs. If you are fit, then possibly. With lunch and a few stops it took us 4hrs to do the circuit!

“Spectacular Views”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

Wainwright describes Catbells as "a family fell where grandmothers and infants can climb the heights together". So we climbed it with our two grandchildren (aged 4 & 6). The boys are very adventurous and had no problem with any part of the ascent starting at Gutherscale. They really enjoyed the few rock scrambles required to get to the top. The views all the way up are stunning and the climb not too arduous. We continued past the top and descended a steeper slope via Hause Gate, returning on the lower, northerly path with great lake views. In total a walk of around 4 miles and for us seasoned walkers, even with the grandkids it took around 2.5 hours.

“Amazing views”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

If you are in the Northern Lakes this is the one to do. I would not call it a walk as there is a slight climb but it is so rewarding for the stunning views. We took some Spanish friends who thought England was permanently under a misty cloud. They were totally bowled over by the experience - admittedly it was a beautiful sunny day and the views in all directions were spectacular. We felt pretty smug!

“Stunning Walk But Make Sure You do it the Right Way Round!”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

We did the circular walk but the wrong way round as ended up climbing down the rock face would have much more enjoyed climbing the rocky part however we had the most amazing views of Derwent Water all the way so we are not complaining just means we'll do it again the other way next time! Spectacular!
