“Really nice site”
Reviewed 17 August 2014

We stayed in one of the camping pods for 3 nights, on arrival at the pod we thought it was great really clean parking right outside. I am a little unhappy that the toilets immediately close to the pods were really shabby and quite dark and grubby, there are other facilities that are nicer but in the rain and wind it's a trek, the park is really clean other wise and quiet at night! Unfortunately that toilet block really let it down but otherwise the pods are great :)

Dear Clare, thank you for your feedback which is greatly appreciated.

We are currently hoping to have plans approved to improve this toilet block which although we refurbished two seasons ago with new cubicles and basins and fittings we accept is still an old building with a flat roof and small windows. You mention shabby but it is fully tiled and painted every year and receives a 4 star designation by Visit England.

I'm delighted you enjoyed staying in the pods and enjoyed the rest of the park despite the rain.

We hope you consider staying with us again.

Yours sincerely

Mr D Jackson

superb caravan/campsite..we camped in top field ,beautiful views.very friendly and helpful staff..actually lost for words at the excellence of the place.our only niggle was that we were caught in the tail end of hurricane bertha ..our tent poles snapped and would really have appreciated the camp kitchen being opened that night so we could make a hot drink, especially having young children that were scared !!! but to be fair the rules were to lock the kitchen, but it was a bit of extreme weatherand bad enough that we slept in the car .but still not so bad that we wouldnt book again ... i would highly recommend this place

Dear Anna, thank you for your August review.

It is good to read that you found our park staff friendly and helpful and who do work hard to provide a good service to our guests.

I'm very pleased to hear you had an enjoyable stay despite experiencing the tail end of a hurricane which is very unusual for August. I think it must have been stronger than forecast if your poles snapped. We do have two camp fields, one which is open for the views and one we planted trees in which provide some shelter from sun and wind, it sounds as if you were in the more exposed field.

But I'm pleased this experience hasn't put you off camping, would like to thank you for your recommendation and hope you may consider visiting us again.

Yours sincerely

Stayed for a weekend, as our usual campsite was full. Overall, a nice site with stunning views over Derwentwater, lovely breakfast at the restaurant and friendly staff at reception and shop. Let down by a tired looking toilet block and hugely overcharging for adding an awning (the caravan pitches are marked out and divided by fencing, so surely, it shouldn't matter what I put or don't put up within that space?) and bringing dogs (GBP 2.40 per dog per night, what for? For cleaning up after them? Thanks, I do that myself. For using the dog wash? No need, they swim in the lake. For barking? They very rarely do and are no nuisance otherwise to anyone.) leaves the impression that it is the view you pay for, not the facilities. Admittedly it was the height of the season and spots were far and few between so I guess we were happy enough to pay that premium. Won't do that again tho. 38 pounds per night is simply too much. There are B&Bs that are cheaper than that, where breakfast and dogs are included in the price.

Dear Guest, thank you for your recent review on TripAdvisor.

It is good to hear you enjoyed your stay on the whole.

Thank you for your feedback on our prices. I am sorry that you hadn't seen our prices before booking but we do have these clearly marked on our website.

It is very good to hear you clean up after your dog but unfortunately not all dog owners are as responsible and we have found that after introducing a charge the number of dog related complaints we receive has dropped to almost zero. Dog owners on the whole don't mind paying a small fee which is reinvested in dog bins, dog shower, staffing to clear up dog bag littering and maintenance of the two small dog walks we provide. We are currently looking at also providing a larger dog exercise area for 2015 which will have a significant cost.

We charge for an awning as feedback we have received from guests who don't use an awning is that they feel they shouldn't have to pay as much as a caravan that has an awing that often have a heater on in them and also create a more crowded feel. We have tried to be fair to both parties in our pricing structure as we welcome both.

We have a tariff that tries to ensure a range of price bands from our premier pitches to hook up only to suit most budgets and is benchmarked against parks offering similar facilities.

Our prime position in the heart of the Lake District does mean we have very high business rates so you are correct in the respect that there is an element of paying for the view, but we also do provide three toilet blocks which you may use (yes we accept one is older than the rest but still clean and up to date fixtures and fittings) a shop, a restaurant, a reception manned from 8.30 am to 9.00pm onsite wardens to assist any time of day, laundry, campers kitchen (free use of toaster and kettles), sitting area in campers room, bathroom, two disabled toilet/showers and free WiFi.

Thank you again.

Yours sincerely

Clean friendly, stunning views from pitches at top of site. We were at bottom and it's a vey steep walk up to the toilet blocks and site entrance/exit. Good location close to Keswick - nice woodland walk into town. Davies taxi's are very good and reasonable. Run from booths supermarket back to site £4.50. Booked for 2 nights but liked it so much we stayed for an extra night.

We used a mix of TripAdviser and online research to decide on Castlerigg Hall Caravan & Campervan park for our holiday.
We did leave our plans until last minute and wondered where we would end up but we completely lucked out and found this gem, so much so, our original plan of a 2 centre holiday went out of the window even before we'd seen the site in person.
As we did book late, it meant we had to swap pitch halfway through, but this didn't impede our time there at all.
In fact we spoke to a number of people who had also decided to stay and switched pitch.
On arrival we were quickly given our clearly marked hook-up numbered pitch(no.58) which was opposite the camping field and close to the lovely shower/toilet and pot wash building.
We were travelling in a campervan with awning and the pitch was lovely.(hard standing surrounded by grass and trees).
Levellers are advisable as the pitches are on a very slight angle.
Keswick is beautiful, and the park offers a beautifully set out environment, nature is all around, we had a daily visit from a robin on this pitch, beautiful birdsong in the morning, pot belly pigs in the field to the back. Rabbits, straight out of Beatrix Potter were abundant....funny to watch the smaller kids chasing them around!
The site's strict rule on noise (not before 8am or after 10.30pm) was followed by all visitors whilst there on our visit and I understand that it is enforced should anyone cause problems (speaking with staff)
This was great for us and went along with the no groups policy. This also gave a sense of relaxation to the whole site.
The main showers(ladies) and toilet block(main) was fantastic. 4 showers, hot water, plenty of mirrors, sinks, changing cubicles and hairdryers(tokens from reception) well lit and warm. These were kept clean by the attentive staff.
We used the pot wash for convenience, 4 sinks, plenty of space.
The second smaller and older toilet block has one shower and although more than sufficient for use, isn't as nice as the main block.
Great facilities! One of the best sites I've seen.
We used the site shop, which had plenty of local products and useful products.
We wouldn't normally of bothered but decided to use the laundry, washing one load(£3.) And then trying to dry this in the dryers. The full load of washing went into the dryer(£1.50), 29 minutes later it was just off wet. We placed it in again (£1.50) and after the same time it was still very damp. We hadn't brought a washing line so we had to dry stuff on the back of chairs etc. Expect for this to probably cost around £6 if you want to dry in the dryers but take a washing line/maiden type thing.
They have a great area for campers to cook and prepare/eat food and even a bath which can be rented.
Having spent a lovely week on the first pitch, we moved with no problem to our second pitch, again hookup with water too, hardstanding on pitch 29.
This area was away from the camping field and closer to the lake views, which are stunning.
Had we booked in advance, we would have loved to have got one of the superior view slots.(ours was slightly obscured by trees)
The site include a wonderful map in the welcome pack, which includes local walks, 3 of which we did.
The site is positioned perfectly for whatever kind of activity or holiday you're after.
Close enough to Derwentwater & Keswick to walk(scenic or road)-a short drive to Keswick. If you just want to chill onsite, there's a bar and restaurant on site, large green and play area, gallery and scenery to enjoy all around.
The staff are always around tending to the walkways, grass, cleaning and repairing-the site is immaculate.
All the staff we dealt with were helpful, jolly and friendly.
There's also a lovely little pub/bar-just around the corner from the site 'Crag Bar' where they serve vegetarian food.
Everyone we spoke to on site sang their praises.
We've been told this site is one of the more expensive, but to be honest, seeing the standard of the facilities and the site's position-I am not shocked or suprised, it's great value-we'd love to come back.
Thanks for making our holiday more memorable Castlerigg Hall!

Dear Guest, thank you so much for such a wonderfully detailed review.

I'm delighted to hear you have had such a memorable stay with us and that you found the facilities and our park to your liking.

We are very fortunate to be located where we are, which provides the best of both worlds. A quiet country location but easy access to Keswick, one of the Lake Districts most scenic and attractive market towns.

I shall pass on your feedback to all our staff who will be pleased to hear your comments.

Thank you again.

We spent 3 nights on this site and thoroughly enjoyed it. We camped on the tent field close to the excellent shower/toilet facilities. It is a well kept site with brilliant views and within walking distance of Keswick. The staff were polite and very helpful during our stay and we had no problems whatsoever. Granted we stayed through the week just before the school holidays so it was relatively quiet. Overall very enjoyable and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this site to others.
