“Good food”

We stayed at the campsite next door to the kings head and ate here on our first evening. The food and drink was good pub food. A varied menu to suit many. The following evening we went for a drink there in which it was very busy so would suggest booking on busy evenings. Comfortable sofas to sit at if not having a meal.

We stayed at the Thirlspot campsite next door over the bank holiday and decided to have dinner on one of the nights at the pub.
It was quite busy but that's always a good sign and they do food until 9.30pm on Saturday nights so we had a drink outside and got a table at 8.40pm ish. The main bar is dog friendly but not the restaurant but there are plenty of tables in both.
Not the most extensive menu but usual fare available - burger, fish n chips, sausage and mash, steak and kidney pudding plus a steak menu. We had a variety of the above and everyone was happy with their lot. It wasn't exceptional food but it was tasty and the portion size was plenty for us, so much that no-one had room for desert!
We paid £80 for 4 x main courses (one steak), 1 x desert and 2 x bottle red wine (good quality). All in all we felt that was very reasonable for four adults on a Saturday night and we would all be happy to eat here again.

Stopped off here after a day out for what we hoped would be a good meal to round the day off. Sadly not to be, food order was wrong, asked for buffalo wings and chips, got chicken bits chips and gravy, ok not to big a deal if it had been nice, chips were under cooked, chicken over cooked and dry, chap serving behind bar arrogant, so didn't bother complaining, just left food, which was not cheap, thankful we didn't order anything more expensive, didn't want to risk the pudding given the poor standard of main meal. Would never go again and would never reccomend it. Highly disapointed.

We stopped here after a walk around Thirlmere and a trip to the top of Great How. We had spent the day meandering around in scorching heat and after a 4 hour walk we decided we would stop for a well earned pint. This stunning pub is well worth a visit especially if you like a nice ale. Our dog was made welcome and they happily refilled her water bottle. We liked the look of it that much we would definitely consider staying.

Booked for one night on our way to Scotland. Having stayed at the Kings Head 5 years ago and enjoyed it we looked forward to another stay only to be really let down. The hotel is tired and needs updating. Staff are in short supply and have far too much to do (multi skilled) so service suffers. The bedroom (room 9) although small was adaquate but the shower room was totally unacceptable it was more like a cupboard when sitting on the toilet your knees were in the shower cubicle which was filthy there was mould everywhere I felt I should get the bleach and old toothbrush out to clean it.
We odered a meal from the bar which was just about acceptable nothing special.
We felt let down and would not returning which is a shame because we had very Special memories from our previous visit.

The food was great, really good portion sizes, the steak pudding was huge and my hubby said it was fab. There were 9 of us, but it only took around 20 mins to bring the food out. The view from the front of what i think is High Rig is gorgeous. Staff were very friendly and accommodating.

This is the second occasion we have stayed at this Hotel / Inn The staff are courteous and extremely hardworking and multitasking, The hotel has a posh restaurant and a detached walk-in bar diner serving passing traffic on this occasion we dined in in the bar section as it would appear the service is better, the food menu imaginative but lacks the attention in detail as we have had reason to return two dishes on our last visit overcooked chip potatoes and on our present visit overcooked starter (burnt) and served cold, obviously a dish that had been prepared previously. The rest of the dishes were served at the hotel’s standard and prompt.
The Bar has a good display of beers and spirits but seems a little pricey half of beer and a half soda water cost £3 but appears to vary in price on different visits to the bar.
The 17c Inn has a unique character of the old and the new but the resident’s lounge is a little uninviting with a arrangements of small arm chairs of different colours placed in a arc not in keeping with the décor.
The accommodation rooms upstairs around 19 in total, all but two overlook the busy road all appear to have the original sash windows no double or secondary glazing as the fast travelling traffic noise is constant between 5am 8pm with occasional lorry thundering through in the early hours sleep quality is poor
Most of the rooms is in dire need of refurbishment on our last visit we stayed in the four poster room of which was updated to high standard
We stayed in room one on this visit small and cramped needs updating, mattress lumpy with uncomfortable springs.
The location of the Inn is fine for car owners where many destinations can be reached by short journeys for those on foot a bus stop is directly outside the inn for walkers access to the high fells is close to the inn
“In all” a general update to the accommodation and the fittings the installation of secondary glazing to keep noise levels to a minimum would greatly improve its appeal and occupancy.
