“Very pleasant stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2011

We stayed Friday and Saturday night at the Keswick Lodge - gorgeous hotel in a great pedestrian location. There are a couple of long stay carparks only a few minutes walk away which cost £7 to cover the 8am to 7pm period. You can pay after 7pm for the next day if you don't want to get up early.
Not a cheap weekend away but everwhere in the lake district is expensive.
We didn't have a meal at the lodge as there was so much choice in the village but the breakfast was fantastic with a great choice.
After reading reviews warning about tiny rooms we paid a little extra for a junior suite and we were given room 2 which was huge and very tastefully decorated.
A nice touch was the thermos of fresh milk for your room.
The staff were very friendly and helpful - they will even fill your thermos with coffee!
Would definately stay here again if we wanted to stay in the area in the future.

Room Tip: Rooms 1-8 on the first floor are probably all bigger than rooms 9-21 (I think it was) on the second...

We stayed here for one night. On arrival we found the welcome extremely friendly and all the staff were pleasant and friendly. We had our dog with us and she was also made welcome. The food was of a high standard, and the breakfast was very, very good.
Our room was spacious and clean and tidy.
Will definately be staying here again.

We stayed a Saturday and Sunday night at the Keswick Lodge. The first room we were allocated was very small and dark and smelled a little damp, and the wall paper around the window was coming away from the wall. We asked if there was another room available and we were immediately moved to alternative room without any problems. Our new room was also very small but adequate.

Unfortunately on this particular Saturday night there was a group of rather rowdy men staying over too. One man was apparently locked out of his room in the early hours and knocked and shouted and swore until his friends appeared some time later and let him in. Thankfully once they were all in and settled there was no more disturbance. However, breakfast the next morning was also a noisy affair as the group shouted across the room to one another about the antics of the night before.

Obviously I do appreciate that the hotel can't be held responsible for the (lack of) manners of their guests!

The staff were quite friendly and efficient. The breakfast was good. The room was clean and tastefully decorated.

Overall our stay was fairly good, but I think there are small things that could easily have been done to make it better. For example, we had to ask on more than one occasion for a flickering light in the bathroom to be fixed (in the end the manager came and changed the bulb for us himself- which was much appreciated, but surely this should have been spotted and rectified when the room was serviced?) Also, there was an unpleasant smell in the bar/restaurant area the whole time - as if the place had been mopped with a sour dirty mop - again easily rectified.

Not bad, but for the money I think it should (and could) be great.

Unfortunately the experience at Keswick Lodge means that we will not consider one of your sister establishments.

The welcome that we received at the Keswick Lodge was cold to say the least. There were no pleasantries and we were left feeling like the gentleman who checked us in had taken in instant dislike to us.

The room was comfortable and perfectly adequate for an overnight stay. However we had booked for our dog as well and there was not even a dog bowl left out for her.

We decided to eat at the Lodge and ordered two platters, one seafood and the other cheese as a main course. When the platter arrived each had only three very small pieces of bread. The seafood platter had no salmon on it and the cheese board had no mozzarella balls, these had been replaced with Wensleydale which was placed again elsewhere on the platter. Before we discovered that there were missing items, we had asked the waitress for more bread and were told that we could have it only if we paid for it.

I pointed out to another waitress that there should have been salmon on the platter and was told that she would rectify this as soon as possible and would also bring us a bread platter as an apology. The salmon came out without the bread and when I questioned the original waitress, I was again told that we could have the bread only if we pay for it!

We finished out meal and another waiter then appeared with the bread!

We gave the Keswick Lodge our custom because you sell yourself on your friendly convivial atmosphere- where was it? We will certainly not recommend you to friends.

May I firstly offer you my sincere apologies that we let you down on your visit to Keswick Lodge. This is not representative of our usual high standards. Both the management team and staff pride themselves on their high levels of hospitality and we are genuinely sorry that we did not live up to these on this occasion. I will be reviewing your feedback with the team and conducting a full review of our working practices. Although I am unable to turn back the clock if you would consider using us again in the future we would be happy to offer you a great deal by way of an apology.

Kind regards,
Iain and the team

We were lucky to get a room in this as all b&bs were full. The man on check in was quite helpful and gave us last available room on this particular evening. The room was big and appeared nice and clean. We were late getting down for dinner at about 8.40p.m. Twenty minutes before last orders, the girl behind the bar was very friendly, however the two waiters were not, they were not interested in taking orders or helping you find a seat. After sitting for about ten minutes and the staff walking by numerous times we got up and left. The next morning we could hear every one move around in the hotel, in and out of rooms and up and down the stairs. Breakfast was in the bar area. We came in and gave our order very quickly, two more tables came after us and got their cooked breakfast before us, ours did not arrive for a long time.
We enquired if there was availability for the next night and the man behind the counter who appeared to be a manager had very little interest so we decided not to waste our money. On check out we did not even get a smile never mind asked if everything was ok!

We found the family room spacious and clean, ideal for a weekend break with the kids. The location of the Keswick Lodge is perfect, handy for the shops and resturants and just a short walk from Derwentwater. The staff were friendly, helpful and attentive and the breakfast was fabulous. We would certainly recommend this hotel. One tip would be to bring around £7 in loose change. As this hotel doesn't have a car park, you will be required to park in a public car park. There is a large one 2 minutes walk away.
