Manesty Holiday Cottages
Reviewed 26 February 2013

The cottages are in a great location if you're looking for a relaxing break to get away from everything. There are no amenities whatsoever in the local area, but as long as you are happy to stock up on food and drink before you arrive then that's not an issue. The local scenery is really beautiful and there are plenty of great swimming spots and hiking routes nearby. The hot tub is particularly great so I would definitely recommend trying it out! Alan, the owner of the cottage was very nice and welcoming, and had lots of tips for things to do during our stay. The only thing that left a sour taste was how rude his daughter was. I certainly hope that she is not a regular staff member, as she really shouldn't be left to deal with customers.

We got our first view of picturesque Manesty nestled under the Fells as we drove into Borrowdale. I have known the Lakes from childhood and it suddenly dawned on me that I had often admired this pretty cluster of cottages on our way up to Catbells but had never had the opportunity to stay there.
They are the best equipped holiday cottages we have stayed in. The owners are descended from an old Lakeland family that have farmed at Manesty for over 100 years. The cottage therefore retained all the lovely old Lakeland character in immaculate condition with a cosy sitting room with TV, large bright fitted kitchen including a dishwasher, two bathrooms, separate internal laundry and three very comfortable bedrooms with window seats overlooking the lake and water meadows. Everything had been thought of for our comfort from crisp white linen, a drier for wet clothes, boot boxes and heating throughout. There were also books and games available to borrow in a large well equipped external laundry. A short walk up the hillside led to a hot tub set in lovely wooded gardens.
A wonderful set of maps for short walks was provided by the owners who were able to give us detailed weather forecasts for our climb to Catbells and another delightful walk into Grange and on to the Bowder Stone. In fact, it was possible to do a wide variety of walks (both valley and fell walks) from the cottage without using the car.
Cheryl very kindly fitted our booking in at a very busy time during High Season when we were searching for a short break with our two children on a busy trip visiting family in the UK. As our home is in Australia, we found the website and bookings a breeze followed by a call to Cheryl to firm up on arrival times. We would love to stay again!

My partner and I have just returned from a great weekend in Borrowdale/Keswick! This is the first time we had stayed at Manesty and it was just what we needed! The only downside to the cottages is that they're so far away from everything!! They were even a little out of Borrowdales centre. This isn't mentioned in many places online, however there was a bus stop to walk to to get to Keswick but the walk was about 30 mins. We stayed in the studio cottage which was perfect for what we needed! Although it was quite dated, it had a lovely country feel to it that we loved! We reserved the hot tub for the saturday however the weather wasn't great and it was freezing so we decided against it! Even though we decided against it and didn't use it at all they did NOT refund us the extra £20, which disappointed us! All in all a great stay in the lakes, however since my partner and I are not experienced walkers we will not return to the Manesty Cottages, simply because of their location.

We have just returned from our New Year break here at Manesty and enjoyed every minute!!
Idillically placed in Borrowdale, is the most beautiful set of cottages.
We stayed in Cockelty How Byre which was modern, stylish, warm and extremely comfortable.
Nestled at the foot of catbells this accommodation is an absolute gem. The owner was very pleasant and explained everything to us.
We will be booking again when the weather is warmer, as we did not have time to take in the numerous walks right on the doorstep.

My wife and I stayed here in July during our annual holiday to the Lakes. We picked Cocklety How Byre which is the luxury cottage at the end. On arrival we were shown around the property by the owner, who explained everything we needed to know and was very friendly and helpful.

The cottage is very nice with a large master bedroom and also a double sofa bed in the lounge. However we think it would be more suitable for a family than two couples, as the bathroom can only be accessed through the bedroom. It's a nice bathroom with a power shower, with the decor matching the rest of the cottage, very nice indeed. The lounge has a large flatscreen television plus a music system, the kitchen has everything you need with electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave and dining table. There is a small patio outside the main doors; this really needs a small table for breakfast but the owner said he would bring one on request. We sat outside most evenings watching the blackbirds feed the chicks in the nest next to the dooor!

There are walks from the cottage in all directions, and there is no need to use the car all week. Both high and low levels are catered for, plus walks around the Lake through Manesty Wood. We set off through here one morning and saw 3 or 4 roe deer.

There are some great pubs in the area, on foot or by car, and can cater for most budgets. The bridge cafe in Grange is worth a vist to sit by the river, feed the ducks and eat the scones. The Flock inn serves great bacon sandwiches, and the riverside restaurant is a good walkers bar and eatery.

Overall this accomodation is very nice, and we saw no evidence of some of the critical comments from other reviewers re the owner. We found him to be very helpful, the cottage was great and the area is wonderful.

Recommended.

Great value cottages very close to Derwent Water and just 10 minutes or so walk into Grange, which has a great tea shop right on the river! We stayed in Cocklety How Stable loft which has lovely views over the valley and is very spacious with two big doubles and one single/smallish double (prob cramped for a couple but fine for one adult or two little children). The cottage was clean, with plenty of hot water, two showers, well equipped kitchen etc. Like other reviewers before us, it was a bit of a surprise to make and strip our own beds, but in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal and the cost for these cottages is so good that the savings have to come from somewhere! Owners very helpful and friendly.

All the cottages at Manesty have been in the family for many years and the owners care dearly about them. De-humidifiers are present around the property as I can only imagine without them they may get a damp smell at certain times of the year, the building are old. Water was always hot and the bathrooms were well equiped as was the kitchen. The owner gives you quite a detailed run of what and how things work, woth taking note, even if you've had a long journey and are tired. Electricity you have to pay for what you use. We also arranged a Tesco delivery for when we arrived, this worked very well, note the owners will take delivery if you ask them if you expect to arrive a bit later.

But the views from the front are just magnificent. Also if you like walking, you don't need to use the car. Cat Bells is at the back and you can get up there in an hour or so, depending on your fitness.

A wonderful week.
