“Simply The Best”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

All I can do is echo what previous guest reviews have said about this super place. Clarence House is a beautifully restored Victorian house with an ambience second to none. My partner and I visited Keswick for the weekend as he was taking part in the Keswick to Barrow charity walk and we were delighted with our accommodation here. Our hosts, Karen and Richard, couldn't have been more welcoming, friendly or helpful if they'd tried. We had Room 6 at the top of the house, which was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated with a gorgeous, old-fashioned bed. As I am post-operative and not long out of hospital, I wasn't expecting to sleep particularly well away from my own bed but I can say, hand on heart, that I had the best two night's sleep I've had in a long time. There was a very well stocked hospitality tray in the room with a good selection of hot drinks, bottled spring water and the most delicious biscuits - they didn't last long! The en-suite was immaculately clean with good quality toiletries supplied, plenty of fluffy towels and an excellent shower with consistently hot water and good pressure. I had managed to forget my hair dryer, but I needn't have worried as that was supplied too - thank you! The breakfast was absolutely superb, freshly cooked to order by Karen and loads of choice from cereals, fresh fruit and toast to the full English - top-notch bacon and sausages and fresh free-range eggs, nothing cheap or nasty. Richard is an ex-army man and thus very knowledgeable about all things outward bound; he had some very handy tips for my partner ahead of his 40-mile walk which were very valuable - he managed to remain blister-free! If we don't visit the Lake District before, we will definitely be booking Clarence House for next year's walk .... why bother wasting time looking to improve upon perfection? Finally, a big thank you for knocking a little off the bill and donating it to the charity fund - very kind and much appreciated. Lisa and Russ.

Room Tip: I don't think it's possible to choose a bad room in this place. We were very happy with Roo...

Dear Eyupmiduck (love the username you've chosen for yourself). Thank you so much for this fantastic review, it really is very kind of you to comment in such glowing terms about so many aspects of your stay with us. We don't claim to be perfect but we are a friendly family run B&B doing the very best we can for our guests. It's great for us to know that you enjoyed a relaxing weekend and your partner had a successful (and blister-free) charity walk.
We wish you both the very best for the future and hope you will come and visit Clarence House again.
Kind Regards
Karen & Richard

I can only reiterate what other reviews have said about this wonderful B&B at Keswick. We spent four nights in room 2, lovely (twin beds in this room). The room was really comfortable, warm and cosy, decorated to a high standard, with beautiful bedding and soft white towels. Richard and Karen make you feel so welcome and it was a pleasure to stay with them. Plenty of choice at breakfast and beautifully cooked and presented by Karen. Although situated only 5 minutes walk from the town centre, the area is really quiet and you will have a good nights sleep.

Richard is always on hand with guidance on walks and the general area. Whether it's a walk over the fells, a stroll around Keswick or further afield he'll point you in the right direction, guide book in hand! If you prefer, there's no need to use your car as lots of walks can begin direct from the door.

For those who haven't visited Keswick before the town has lots of shops, restaurants and pubs (outdoor market Thursday and Saturday whilst we were there). Derwent Water is a few minutes stroll away.

If you are thinking of a spending some time in the Lakes, don't look any further just book and enjoy!

See you again Richard and Karen, thank you so much for a great stay.

Room Tip: Room 2 (if you want a twin room). All rooms are really lovely

Me and my partner have really enjoyed our stay at this super B&B. The position, just a few minutes easy walk from the centre of Keswick but in a quiet location, was just what we wanted. The owners Richard and Karen are a wonderful couple who make you feel very welcome and very comfortable. Our room was decorated to a good standard and was so clean and warm. Great to return to after a good days walking on the fells. Richard gave some great tips on where to walk and where to eat for which we were very grateful. He even lent us some maps and guide books.
We will definitely come back to stay here again and will tell our friends also. Thanks for a lovely stay.

I stayed with a friend for three nights before Easter and couldn't have asked for a better base to explore the lakes from.

Richard and Karen were so welcoming from the word go even phoning up to check we weren't lost on our way there as we arrived later on! They had loads of ideas on places to go cycling and walking and kindly gave us a flask of tea after realising we'd forgotten our own which was very welcome on the top of hellvellyn!

The room was fantastic and great value for money and also in a superb location within a short walk of the town centre but still lovely and quiet. The only thing stopping me going back is not being able to get the time off work.

Can't fault it and I will definitely book again here next time I get up to the lakes.

From the moment Richard greeted us at the door we knew we had made a good choice for our weekend in Keswick. This is a really nice guest house, beautifully refurbished and run with energy and pride by the owners. Karen cooks a great breakfast and the fruit salad was delicious. Richard offered us invaluable advice on where to eat, drink and walking routes which suited us. Our whole weekend was a marvellous experience and much of the credit for that has to go to Clarence House and it's lovely owners. We've got the bug for walking now and will defintely be back to Keswick and Clarence House.

Stayed three nights over Easter and would definitely recommend it - excellent location (for town centre, lake and walks) and facilities and even better hosts! Both Karen and Richard were extremely friendly and made us feel right at home.

Richard knows the area like the back of his hand and his recommendations for walks (all sorts – short/long/easy/difficult – you name it!) and restaurants were spot on. They even lent us maps and guide books which was really handy.
Karen’s cooked breakfasts (on top of the fresh fruits and other options) are a treat and a perfect start for that amazing walk (of which there are loads) in and around Keswick.
And of course…apart from cookies every day the Easter Eggs were a pleasant surprise.

Couldn’t have asked for more - a warm welcome (and cookies and fresh milk!) when we arrived (even though we got there before the scheduled check-in time); immaculate rooms, tips and ideas of what to do and see; great food and finally a nice farewell after letting us collect bags that we had left for the day at a time that suited us and helping us figure out the local bus times (using another one of their handy leaflets!).

Room Tip: Karen and Richard have all the tips you need!

Dear Pavan

Thank you for this fantastic review, it's so kind of you to take the trouble to do this and we are very grateful. We're pleased that your Easter break in Keswick was such an enjoyable experience for you both and hopefully well worth the long journey up from London. You certainly got out and about and made the most of your time here, which is great for us to see from our guests. But there are still lots of places in The Lake District you haven't seen yet so if you ever want to return please consider staying at Clarence House again.

Thanks again and best wishes

We cannot recommend Clarence House enough. Our room was newly decorated and furnished to an extremely high standard and breakfast was yummy - its just a shame that the full English only left a space for a very small bowl of the delicious fruit salad!!! Richard and Karen were fantastic, sociable hosts, full of useful information and stories. This really is the only place to stay in Keswick!

Thank you very much for this kind review - we are extremely grateful. Thank you also for being such friendly and active guests, we really enjoyed meeting and chatting with you both. We do find that the fresh fruit salad is very popular at breakfast. Good luck with your own business over the next year but please try and schedule in some time to visit us again.
