“Probably one of the worst nights I have ever spent in a Hotel”
Reviewed 25 February 2010

Our room had two double beds shoe-horned into a space that really should have been for one - It was tired and dated. The toilet cistern ran all night long and defied all attempts to deaden the sound or stop it. The room was above the staff/kitchen area and seemed to have a vent directly to it as we heard every word, every saucepan being washed and bashed around into the early hours. After a night of very little sleep we were treated to the joys of the morning staff - there was an indifferent apology. Given the money charged by this hotel it fell far below the standards you would expect.

We spent a weekend at this hotel whilst on a visit to our daughter who had broken her leg whilst sledging!! We had a real bargain, pay £100 for two nights b and b and get one free, excellent. We were met by Richard, the owner I think, who was really friendly and helpful. It was around 4.30 p.m. and the fire was blazing cheerily in the bar area which was very cozy and comfy in the freezing weather. The hotel has only seven rooms so I would call it a pub/restaurant with rooms. In the eveningl the restaurant was really busy with locals and has a good food reputation. Yes, the room was small and not trendy/modern, but it was clean and warm and the bed was comfortable, there was plenty of hot water and the shower was good, there was a small flat-screen tv and tea/coffee making facilities also there is wi-fi - What more could you want? It was lovely to go out walking, come back to a hot shower, catch up on the news on the tv/laptop, sit in the bar by the fire with a glass of red wine and have a good dinner before turning in and having a good night's sleep. I liked it.

My wife and I stayed just one night at this hotel (actually more a pub with rooms) and can't comment on the food other than the breakfast, as we ate out. However we were a bit disappointed with the place given the relatively high room price.

Good points:
- friendly staff
- cosy bar with open fires
- OK breakfast

Not so good:
- only a standard double bed (most places these days have king size, surely?)
- the room (No 4 of 6) was tatty and not that large
- no draft beer - all pressurised stuff
- the car park and the approach to the main entrance were treacherous due to snow and ice which made it like a skating rink. However, no-one had bothered to try and clear it away or even spread some grit. We weren't the only guests who commented on the lack of care here ...

Overall, the place seemed to be quietly stagnating.

The Brantwood Country House Hotel, Stainton, Penrith, Lake District, England.

We recently spent a vacation in England and visited the English Lake District. We had the good fortune of staying at a hotel that had been recommended to us - the Brantwood Country House Hotel in the village of Stainton near Penrith. It was excellent.
It is a small quaint hotel in a perfect position, real easy to find off the M6 motorway, not too busy, and only minutes drive from the beautiful Ullswater and other lakes. Stainton is a midsize village, peaceful but with plenty to do, and just a couple of miles from the old town of Penrith.
The bedrooms were very comfortable with everything we could have needed and the public rooms were the same.
The restaurant was better than we could have dreamed of with an excellent menu, lots of choice and daily specials with local produce. The food we ate there, the lamb and the steaks and all kinds of dishes, were some of the best we have had anywhere. The friendly and efficient service throughout was first class.
There is also a quaint English bar, popular with the local folk, serving a wide choice of beers and wines and liquor.
This hotel is family owned and run, and it shows. They are really interested in making your stay something to remember, and they sure succeeded with us. The owners and staff are really helpful, full of ideas as to what to see and where to go. The friendly atmosphere runs through everything.
There is good secure car parking.
The big surprise was that all this was provided for a very moderate price. The rooms and food were great value as well as being such good quality.
We recommend this hotel as highly as possible. Anyone staying there, or just eating there, is in for a real treat.
