“Beautiful creative space in idyllic surroundings!”

We were so excited to visit “The Gatehouse”, from the pictures advertised it looked perfect for us - the grand piano, the log burner, the acceptance of hairy four legged friends, the free standing bath, the interesting, unusual yet stylish decor and in the flesh it was quite overwhelming! As we walked in we were completely blown away, this place is truly unique. Firstly, it is much bigger than it looks on the pictures, the open plan mezzanine level makes the place feel really roomy and the light is gorgeous yet it manages to feel cozy at the same time. The decor is so interesting that we spent ages just looking around saying “WOW”! On a practical level it had everything we needed. The couches were comfy, as were the beds. Between the piano, the books, and the view there was never a moment we weren’t occupied, but there is also a tv with freeview and some games to play should you need that kind of thing. The kitchen was great for us but I’d suggest taking
your own condiments herbs spices etc. if you’re going to cook for yourselves but there are plenty of pots, pans, plates, cups etc. The only problem in the kitchen is the over enthusiastic smoke alarm that needed to be continuously wafted during heavy cooking (or slightly overdone hot cross buns).

The bathroom is lovely - there is no shower but the huge free standing bath more than makes up for that. The window into the rest of the cottage from the bathroom means you can spy on your housemates as you brush your teeth! At the time we stayed there was no latch on the bathroom door, we are a free and easy bunch so wasn’t a problem for us, or the dog who liked to nudge open the door to get and eyeful of us in the bath!

The icing on the cake for us was the hammock suspended from the mezzanine beam in the lounge (not shown on the pictures) this was great fun and very relaxing, we spent a lot of time in it!

It was very cold when we visited but the house was lovely and warm and the log burner really threw out some heat, the copper piping on the lounge ceiling was great but it did create a lot of creaking in the wood so if you’re a light sleeper or easily spooked may be a problem but we slept like the dead so was no bother at all! The bunk beds under the stairs are a great idea and really fun.
The Gatehouse is set in a beautiful area, the views were incredible everywhere we went. I’d recommend getting up early and taking a stroll down the lane to catch the sunrise as it was gorgeous even on a frosty January morning.

There is a small garden at the back of the Gatehouse which is gated so is secure for dogs and children.

We didn’t see much of the owners (they live next door in a gorgeous B&B called Kelleth Old Hall) as we didn’t need them for anything but from the little interaction we had with them they seemed lovely!

I will be recommending The Gatehouse to friends, family, colleagues, strangers on the street, anyone who will listen. We had such a great 4 days we wished it could have been longer and can’t wait to go back.

“Quirky, unique, just brilliant!”
Reviewed 16 June 2017 for a stay in March 2017

Quirky, pet friendly, beautiful location!
Thoroughly enjoyed our visit!
Lovely location, great dog friendly pub 5 minutes drive down the road serving good food!
Great enclosure garden for the dogs, very spacious!!
This property had everything you needed! Charlotte was more than happy to help if we required anything!
The little things made this place, Charlotte provided a great little guide of local places, sites to see, instructions on how to use everything. All aspects covered!! We visited some beautiful places on this holiday that without the help of charlottes notes we would never have found/ known about from looking online.
Kirkby Stephen was only 10 minutes drive with all local amenities I.e. Shop, butchers , bakers etc.
The uniqueness of this property is fabulous; the bath tub, port hole window, copper pipes, tin walls, staircase and grand piano all adding to this!!
Would definitely recommend! Would love to visit again!!

“Beautiful bohemian cottage in the heart of Cumbria”
Reviewed 11 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Wonderful cottage, and truly unique. It has the warm feel you would expect from such a location, mixed with an eclectic and fascinating decor. The property was clean and an easy drive to amnesties / the lakes. A tad expensive but worth every penny.
