“The Gypsy Wagon”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

Although our rating is average, it could have easily been excellent. There were a lot of good things we liked about our stay. The farm is in an excellent secluded location, with great views, and a pub in walking distance. It is an easy 10 minute drive to beautiful Keswick with lots of stuff to do. It is a family run farm with animals. The campsite facilities were good. We stayed in the Gypsy Wagon which we loved, and received a tasty complimentary breakfast roll in the morning. Their children were helping out to serve the breakfast rolls and were very friendly and doing an excellent job. Not all the staff were that friendly, and one came across a bit rude, but on the whole they were able to help. On arrival the Gypsy Wagon was dirty and needed a clean, which was an unfortunate first impression, because it was so charming, and we enjoyed the night. There’s a picnic table outside and a fire pit. However, the biggest downside is that the Wagon is placed in an awkward spot, right next to a gate which was quite busy with people and cars. We cancelled our second night because on our return from a day out, a large party of campers had pitched up right in front of the wagon in an otherwise empty field, turning our picnic area into a car park, with people coming and going, leaving no privacy in the Wagon. The Wagon would benefit from being relocated to somewhere more private (as are the Camping Pods), that would better suit its intimate appeal. However, it is still a nice place to stay, and would recommend it as the Gypsy Wagon is a fun and novel experience. If the Wagon was relocated, it could be an excellent place to take a break.

We stayed in a camping pod, best decision at that time cos it was pouring down of rain. Our camping pod is comfortable with mattress, small heating and lights. The only suggestion is a 2 hooks where we can hang our coats. There are 2 positions of camping pod and we were in the hard standing with the caravans..next time we would like to try the pods in the tent area, as they look more modern with the storage box and patio or more amenities. Over all, we love the place...walking distance to Troutbeck Inn .

We've stayed in a camping pod here before and love the site. It's a convenient location with good facilities.
This year I booked the big self catering cottage as we had 3 generations staying with various family and friends coming and going for my Mum's 70th Birthday. It worked really well.
The cottage is very well equipped, one of the best I've stayed in from that point of view and is comfortable and cosy.
The private garden worked well for a big BBQ, the kids loved the play areas and Amanda let us pitch a tent aswell for the overspill of guests!
Only comments to make are that the kitchen is very small when cooking for a large number. It worked but was a challenge! The sofa beds are not really fit for purpose and were ok for small children but not for adults.
Having said that we had a great week and will come back - probably back to the pods!

Gill Head Farm campsite is ideally located just off the main Kendal to Keswick road.
We stayed for just one night in our motorhome, it's a great little site with great views of the surrounding mountains, but was let down by the cleanliness of the shower areas.
There are 2 areas to pitch, hardstanding and grass, the grass area was taken by a couple of school groups when we stayed although we were not disturbed in any way over on the hardstanding.
We booked our pitch over the phone for an agreed price, on departure when paying for our stay the price had gone up by £5, no biggie, but........

Great location and views. Having enquired via email on availability I received a very quick but blunt response. When trying to book via email I did not receive any response. I later called to confirm a booking and was told they had no record of my booking or emails. Nevertheless I booked and was very happy with the location and facilities but found the staff very unhelpful and rude.

We camped at Gill Head Farm for a couple of nights while my son and husband cycled first part of coast to coast route, what a shame we were on the move and couldn't stay longer. The facilities are great, the location superb and the owners so lovely and friendly. Early June, wild flower heaven, views fantastic. We've camped in many places UK and Europe, and this site is one of the most lovely we have visited. We will come back as soon as we can!!

This was our first time in a camping pod and it was great. We stayed in a slightly larger family pod, myself, my husband and our 10yr old daughter. The pod came with 5 x comfortable filled mattresses, a heater, electricity and 2 x lights. A picnic table, bbq stand and storage box were also provided. With our beds laid out there was still room for a small eating area. The pod was warm, carpeted, secure and sturdy with plenty of room for my 6ft 2" hubby to stand up comfortably.
The site was lovely with fantastic views to Blencathra when clear. The loos/showers looked and smelt clean every time we used them.
A communal area was provided near the childrens play area which had seating, TV, magazines, microwaves and a fridge/freezer.
Breakfast barms, porridges or croissants can be ordered from the farm house the night before. Very tasty and on time as promised.
All in all a beautiful site, well maintained and away from the madding crowds.
One thing I think the pods could do with is a hook or two...just for hanging coats up. Everything else, fab!
Hope to be back there soon.
