“Wedding reception, questionable service?”
Reviewed 26 October 2012

Now you have to be careful what you say as we were simply family guests, and there is no way of even thinking about the value for money issue.

The location is to die for when it is sunny, but it is miserable when it is misty and raining-as invariably happens on a wedding day!

We cannot have any major complaints as the food was tasty and plentiful, but the glass of red wine served with the meal was very sweet and sickly. This was far the worst red wine I have tasted in a very long time. A hotel such as this one should not serve low grade wine like this, irrespective of the Customers budget.

Most of the waiting staff were very young and inexperienced, and quite frankly they were out of their depth. They should have served diners furthest from the dining room doors in view of limited space, rather than frequently squeezing past and brushing diners. Where are the head waiters these days?

The service at the evening buffet was no better.

Cannot see us ever going back

Stayed at the Roundthorn on a last minute business trip recently. As most other people have stated, the place has a typical Country House feel to it and the staff are warm and welcoming. The highlight for me was the cooked breakfast. I've stayed in an awful lot of hotels over the years but I can't remember too many breakfasts as good as this.

I have only one negative comment about room 6. The bathroom had a window, albeit about 10 feet off the floor, but it looked into the bathroom next door! Rather strange I thought.

Last Christmas it was decided we should have a Christmas party, family style. Now wow each year there is a different theme and the menu and drinks are made perfectly to fit in with the theme, their is full entertainment on the night and it is as if you are part of your very own fairy tale. The staff are so happy, friendly and welcoming and are sincere when they are asking how you are doing. We decided to stay over and wow the rooms are so comfy and the bathroom, well there was a struggle to get me out of it as the shower was so powerful. The rooms view was lush and the gardens were in a such a way that not only were they beautiful but you could also sit in them just to relax. The breakfast was perfect, not over the top at all. I rate every part of this place as highly as possible. Can't wait for this years do as its a circus theme. Amazing for family, friends of all ages. You should deffo try it as long as you leave room for me!

We have stayed at this hotel for two nights on our way back from Scotland. It is ideally located just off the M6, in the Lake Dostrict area, but a satnav or an ipad/iphone with maps is needed to get to it easily. The place has lots of character provided by its Grade II listed building, in the middle of a nice garden and with stunning views over the Eden Valley. I was very excited to be accomodated somewhere that did not look or feel like a sterile business hotel environment. There are just 10 rooms which also brings in some of the downsides:

- there is not much choice for breakfast in the morning; we also tried dinner and were quite let down - food was very basic and seemed like the chicken was from the previous day
- the room we had had fantastic views, but the period furniture made it look a bit too crowded...for example, the flatscreen TV could have probably been mounted on the wall in front of the bed instead of us having to move its stand away from the bed curtains so that we could get to watch some Olympics action.
- there are cracks on the ceiling in the bathroom and the floor carpet could have done with some more vacuuming; great white fluffy towels provided, though

Thumbs up for the chrystal chandeliers and for the staircase window.
Staff was very helpful and friendly.
