This is a small hotel which has some lovely views but is a bit off the beaten track. The hotel is a nice traditional large country house, with lots of nice original features. Each room is different and the ones I saw where all very spacious and warm. The staff a very helpful and service was very good. There is a restaurant in the hotel which serves a good selection of food, that is very good value, the same goes for the bar, the drinks are not too expensive. Breakfast was freshly cooked and very nice. Couple of niggles, one was the room I was in (10) there is a water heater that when it starts sounds a bit like a kettle, and the room has a slight slope so that when you are in bed you fell like you are rolling into the middle of the bed. Would stay again.

Room Tip: The higher rooms have limited head room due to the shape of the roof.

Was a guest of the brides family so I can't comment on value for money.

The hotel has beautiful views over the surrounding hills and was quite spectacular on a frosty morning. The bar area is quite snug with a nice room at the side with a fireplace. I was very impressed with all of the staff who were friendly, polite and genuinely seemed to enjoy making the event a good one. The dining room was laid out very well and the food was excellent - better than I have had in 5* hotels and I'm not easily impressed with food at weddings!

I had a room on the top floor which was very spacious and the bathroom was huge. The room was clean, comfortable and well appointed. The bathroom was fine if a little tired at the edges.

All in all an enjoyable stay with lovely hotel staff.

A beautiful country estate in an idyllic setting outside Penrith. The property is apparently popular with locals for weddings and parties and we were warned politely that there would be events both nights we stayed there. This meant the lounge and bar were effectively unavailable as there was quite a crowd, but there was a small, intimate lounge with a fireplace held for guests only and the attentive staff took care of my food and beverage requests with a smile, so I can't complain. The events did necessitate putting us on the third floor in a smaller room, but overall, it was a nice place with a congenial staff. I would love to try it again in warmer weather and without wedding parties.

Now you have to be careful what you say as we were simply family guests, and there is no way of even thinking about the value for money issue.

The location is to die for when it is sunny, but it is miserable when it is misty and raining-as invariably happens on a wedding day!

We cannot have any major complaints as the food was tasty and plentiful, but the glass of red wine served with the meal was very sweet and sickly. This was far the worst red wine I have tasted in a very long time. A hotel such as this one should not serve low grade wine like this, irrespective of the Customers budget.

Most of the waiting staff were very young and inexperienced, and quite frankly they were out of their depth. They should have served diners furthest from the dining room doors in view of limited space, rather than frequently squeezing past and brushing diners. Where are the head waiters these days?

The service at the evening buffet was no better.

Cannot see us ever going back

Stayed at the Roundthorn on a last minute business trip recently. As most other people have stated, the place has a typical Country House feel to it and the staff are warm and welcoming. The highlight for me was the cooked breakfast. I've stayed in an awful lot of hotels over the years but I can't remember too many breakfasts as good as this.

I have only one negative comment about room 6. The bathroom had a window, albeit about 10 feet off the floor, but it looked into the bathroom next door! Rather strange I thought.
