“Hidden Gem on top of the world”
Reviewed 14 January 2011

I very rarely return to a hotel twice. Why would I want to when there are so many to experience? However, I now have to make the exception. The Roundthorn was far beyond my expectations in every way. Staying at the hotel was a treat for myself and daughter as part of a spa day at a nearby location. From the offset the car park is great and free! The bedrooms are large and the facilities so clean. The beds comfortable and warm. The breakfast was 6*. As the Hotel is up quite high on a hill I asked the mananagement if the roads were maintained with grit in bad weather. They assured me that there were so as to ensure safe passage for guests. The Hotel provides bar snacks as a service but doesn't have a restaurant on site. The friendly reception staff recommended a local pub for late night food called The Cross Keys Inn. Without a doubt, this proved to be an absolute excellent recommendation. My room had a kitchen. It was hidden away so found it by surprise. Please don't tell everyone though about Roundthorn as this is my secret hidden gem up on a hill with panoramic views. This fusspot who isn't easily pleased with accommodation, definately concludes ' i'll be back' !

Attended a wedding at the hotel and was overwhelmed with the service and standard of food will definitely come back on a leisure stay because we loved every second of the stay

A warm welcome and help with luggage. Friendly and efficient staff throughout our stay. Light evening meal good but the breakfast is extra special with locally resourced food, served in a very attractive and sunny room. Would happily stay again and again.

Business trip to Penrith - long drive from the Midlands. Arrived at hotel and was more than suprised - immaculate gardens, extremely large, comfortable room up in the 'attic'. Managed to get a 'mid week' deal and so the price was excellent ( I phoned the hotel and was quoted less than Laterooms ) . About two miles out of Penrith and hence near the M6 althoug you cannt see it or hear it. Wish I had my walking boots as opposed to a suite and tie. Staff seem very friendly - have not as yet tried the food and so cannt comment.. Only downside is the WI FI connection which is 'slow' - mind you, considering where the hotel is Im impressed I get any connection.

Stayed here overnight whilst going to 'Center parcs, Whinfell Forest' for a spa/pamper day.
Great location. and excellent value. Our room was immaculate and very spacious. it even had a little kitchen off it. Only thing is this room was in the attic with very low ceilings so if you were over 6ft then you might bang your head!
Breakfast was fantastic and the dining room really nicely laid out.
Great service , will definatley stay here again.

We attended this hotel to photograph a wedding and we were very impressed with the level of service from the staff and from the food they provided. We were lucky enough to be able to eat the wedding breakfast and thought it was delicious.
They appeared to bend over backwards to make the bride and groom feel like nothing but them mattered for the day and the overall impression from all of the guests was that they had really enjoyed their experience at The Roundthorn Country House.

This is a really comfortable well run hotel and being close to the M6, is a perfect stop-over to / from Scotland. The hotel is not large and it is very peaceful. It is set in lovely countryside away from any road noise but only a few miles into Penrith. The garden is nice on a summer's evening.

Full marks to the staff who were extremely friendly and efficient and made us feel very welcome. Our room was at the back of the hotel and although quite small it was very clean; the bathroom was freshly decorated and quiet enough for a sound night's sleep. The rooms at the front looked bigger and had fine views over the countryside. We will try for one of those rooms next time!

We ate in the bar which serves good home cooked food and is ideal if after a long journey, you do not want to drive around the countryside.

Breakfast had everything we could wish for and a good start to the next leg of the journey.
