I went to larch cottage this morning with my mum and we visited the coffee shop. We ordered two coffees and asked for some sweetner as my mum cannot eat sugar. The waitress spent around 10 minutes looking for sweetners and came back, interupting my mum on the phone to explain that they could not find any sweetners. I then asked if she could have an earl grey tea instead, the waitress then spent another 10 minutes away from the table and came back with a container of sweetners that she had 'found in the office'. The sweetners were filthy and did not dispense any sweetners. As we had now waited around 20 minutes we decided to leave and ask for a refund. The manager came to deal with us and did not apologise and actually refunded us the incorrect amount for the coffee we were unable to drink. We explained that the sweetners were filthy and the manager said 'that's because they were from the office'. I felt that this experience was unacceptable. It is clear that the staff need better training in customer complaints, numeracy, cleanliness and time management. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and I will not be returning.

There is no mention of this place on the Center Parcs complex. Thank goodness we looked further afield.

We found out about this place using google search and when we first arrived it looked rather small (definitely a case of not judging a book by its cover).
We parked in the car park across the lane, walked through the entrance and were met with a wonderful selection of plants and trees, all tastefully displayed within authentic italian looking buildings.
The site is large with paths which are in the main accessible (and where it isn't, there is an alternative). There are lots of small enclosed areas with various statues that are also for sale. After a fairly long walk around the various parts we aimed for the restaurant.
We sat in the lower terrace and were greeted by a pleasant waiteress who took our drinks order and then brought us the menus. We ordered pizzas, fishcakes and a Brie open sandwich. All food was dispatched and not a complaint from anyone, only compliments.
After a break we ordered pudding (strawberry cheesecake, chocolate cake and a piece of pizza dolce). The whole meal was delicious.

As we left we had a chat with a member of staff who handed us a leaflet which explains that the walls and buildings were built by the owner.

Overall a wonderful afternoon was spent here

To summarise, food - excellent, staff - excellent, garden centre - excellent

It was a fabulous sunny day when we visited and we were lucky enough to get a table on the balcony overlooking the pond and gardens. We had a fantastic fresh cooked pizza with a glass of wine followed by a wonderful cheesecake and coffee. The place has never disappointed, and the nursery has grown quite extensively over the last few years. Well worth a trip, great lunch and lovely to wander around the plants and Italian themed gardens.

Thank Sm0

Our table was the nearest to the door leading out to the dining balcony. It lacked a self-closing fitting. Some people (including staff) did not think to close the door after them. It was a cold rainy day. The cold draught was most uncomfortable and we had to keep getting up to close the door, as did diners from another table. We were at a loss as to why this issue had not previously been identified and appropriately resolved.

I had a very tasty baked potato with cheese and chilli and salad accompaniment. My wife ordered the onion soup. It tasted divine but owing to a basic preparation error included an abundance of fibrous strips of celery, rendering the soup undrinkable. We informed our pleasant and helpful waitress of this. My wife instead opted for the delicious chocolate and caramel tart.

Noticing that the cost of the onion soup was on the bill, I pointed out this oversight to our waitress who in turn referred it to a supervisor. There was no question of an apology. Instead we got the third degree from (to quote from James Edey's recent review) “not a particularly pleasant person with a clipped manner. This person just wasn't up to the job.” How much of the soup been drunk? Had the kitchen staff been informed? Had we told the waitress etc? By now, this person was proving to be something of an embarrassment and we willingly accepted her grudging offer of a 10% discount (about half the cost of the soup) without apology just to escape from the place.

The nursery gets 5 stars. Beautifully layed out, vast selection of plants....well worth a visit for the garden lover.

However, our experience of the restaurant was disappointing.

I had booked a table for two on the balcony at 1pm. When we arrived they had no record of this and the balcony was full. Fortunately a table was just coming free so we were shown to it. The table was promptly cleared but not wiped down....it was sticky.

The menu is a little limited and made worse by one of the starters and one of the main courses not being available. However, we placed our order for food and drinks and waited. And waited! Took a long time for the drinks to arrive and even longer for the food.

The food was OK. Wedges were good. The goats cheese salad OK. The Thai fishcakes not the best, to be honest. We didn't bother with a sweet but had coffee which was good. The whole experience took 2 hours.

However, the worst part was the performance of the server which was amateurish to say the least. Not a particularly pleasant person who replied to questions in a clipped manner. This person just wasn't up to the job.

It's a shame because the attention to detail and customer service in the nursery is second to none.
