We used South Cottage as a base for visiting the Lakes District. It is very comfortable and well appointed, and is well located for pleasant day trips.

“Superb”

Booked a short break at short notice. Chloe was very responsive and provided loads of useful info. The cottage was gorgeous, all the comforts of home and then some. Would definately recommend as a get away from it all place to go. Lots of great walks nearby - and the dog loved it

“Perfect”
Reviewed 6 October 2014 for a stay in October 2014

I write this on the last morning of our pre-wedding break in Cumbria.

From the minute we booked, Chloe (owner) has been the perfect 'host' even down to some last minute rebooking of dates due to a family emergency. Polite, friendly & informative. Thank you Chloe.

The cottage itself? What can I say? Perfect. Simply perfect. Everything you could ever want in a holiday rental. Clean, warm, beautifully decorated. It lacks for nothing and immediately felt like a home from home.

It's a minutes walk from the charming and friendly village shop and equidistant from the beautiful countryside of Cumbria. We've spent a peaceful couple of days walking, exploring and eating. The weather has been mixed but when not out walking, there is plenty to explore within the village and within 20 mins drive it doesn't matter. With an open fire, sharing a bottle of wine (thank you!) and watching the cottages copy of Wainwrights Walks, the evenings have been simply wonderful.

I've written separate reviews but do try the George Hotel and Silver Yard Cafe in the village for excellent food!

We're sad to leave but will most definitely be back next year.

“Ideal base for heading to the lakes”

Having inquired with numerous places in Ambleside, Windermere and so on for a weeks break in kids holiday & being quoted silly money, we decided to stay just outside & were very happy to discover this little cottage.

The cottage itself is small but comfortable for what we needed. It has WiFi which was a blessing as I struggled with a phone signal. There's a decent sized lounge with modern decor that was perfect when getting back from hiking in the lakes. The kitchen was a little small but well equipped, although we only ate in the once there was still enough room to prep & cook. Bathroom again is small but have used the space well & decorated lovely. Enjoyed the nice deep bath & shower over head. The two bedrooms were both adequate sizes and beds were comfortable to sleep on.

As for Orton itself, it's a beautiful quiet little village with friendly locals. There's a small park close for young kids, a good pub for bigger kids, a local shop & post office too although I have to say, we generally headed out to various areas of the lakes most days. Speaking of which, it only took about a 35-40 min drive to get to Ambleside, less to kendal & windermere, so if you are wanting to visit the lakes but find the prices a little too high, then I recommend here. Plus the views you'll see on the way are amazing!

Also, had great communication with the owner of the property, who answered any queries quickly through email.

What a fabulous wee find. This cottage is absolutely perfect. It is in a lovely wee village with great links to the Lake District and m6 motorway. We went somewhere different every day. The cottage itself has every home comfort you could wish for. The kitchen is fully equipped with every appliance, and utensil you would need. The washer/dryer was put to good use, with everything from a grater to pizza tray, slow cooker to sea salt and peppercorns. The livingroom had loads of DVDs, books, games, lovely comfortable furniture, maps, information packs on the local area. The beds were so comfy with the bathroom having a great electric shower and lovely fluffy towels. The cottage was supplied with loads of toilet paper, kitchen roll, every cleaning item imaginable from soap powder/ fabric conditioner, to starch and oven cleaner. There was a parking space at the back door of the cottage, a fabulous cafe the silver yard only one minutes walk away. The village if orton is lovely, the wee church at the top of the hill is steeped in history, there are some lovely walks and the scenery is amazing. The village store is great for basic supplies. We took a full supermarket shop with us for meals and were so glad we did as it saved us a fortune and we had planned lovely meals each night. Honestly go and book it now the cottage is amazing. I would definitely recommend it. I would say a car is a necessity. The TV has a sky box and has all of the freeview channels but did say please insert your sky viewing card at other channels so will certainly bring that the next time. Thank you Chloe for a fabulous holiday, we will certainly be back.

“Best little home in Cumbria”
Reviewed 27 May 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We couldn't have wanted for anything. This little cottage met all of our needs and them some. Its location is ideal, nestled in a small village within equal distance to both The Lakes District AND the Yorkshire Dales. We stayed for a week in Spring and found it to be perfect, the kitchen is well appointed with everything you could want or need to cook for yourself, the bedrooms are comfy and cosy, the living area is wonderful, and all heated by very effective heating. The host is very helpful and friendly, you couldn't ask for better.

Thanks Chloe for a wonderful stay, we had a great time!

“This cottage met all of our expectations!”
Reviewed 11 May 2014 for a stay in May 2014

South Cottage was perfect for the two of us, being situated in the heart of a small village Orton, and just 100 yds. to the very friendly George pub. Every appliance we required was there and everything worked! Spotlessly clean and warm, even on wet Cumbrian nights, we would not hesitate to stay there again if in the area.
