Two sisters and husbands plus one dog. Bannerdale is excellent everything you need for a relaxing and peaceful break. Jill and Steve not forgetting Tia, are great hosts. The cottage is beautiful and very well equipped.
On the plus side as well, the weather was kind to us - with lots of sunny dry weather even though it was cold and the views from the cottage were lovely with snow on the hills. All in all a perfect week. Trying to work out a special birthday celebration break for more of the family to join us next time. Our thanks to Jill and Steve for making us so welcome.

Spent a great week with family at Near Howe. Favourite UK holiday destination we all love it here. The cottages are all very well equipped. Steve and Jill are excellent hosts. Have been coming sometimes once or twice a year for the past ten years. Thank you once again.

We spent a week at Near Howe in July, which was absolutely perfect for us on several levels. We had our 16 mth old in his travel cot with us in the master bedroom, which has an ensuite shower room - great for showering with squirmy toddler! - and my in-laws stayed in the small bedroom. The "sun room" made a lovely retreat and/or nap room and the cottage was light and airy. We were worried a bit about my father-in-law feeling claustrophobic in the small bedroom, but actually with the light coming in the over-the-door windows from both sides he was absolutely fine. There was plenty of space in the cottage (and on the grounds) for people to have a bit of peace and quiet if they felt like getting away from the group. There's also a nice little bench swing overlooking the hills, which helped to keep our toddler entertained. There was also a bird feeder in the garden outside our kitchen window, which kept the twitchers in the family happy.

The location was excellent for our daily hikes but also there are several nearby attractions that are child-friendly - including a very nice visitor centre with toy shop, bookstore, soft play area, cinema, gallery, cafes, foodie shop and more at Rheged Discovery Centre, only 5 min drive from Near Howe, towards Penrith. There's also plenty of brochures, menus, etc in Near Howe's visitor's book, which we found helpful.

The kitchen was adequately equipped, and as I'm a keen cook that was very helpful. Our friends were staying upstairs with their 1 yr old, and we found that Bannerdale was roomy enough for shared meals and games in the evening with all 6 adults. (We had a baby monitor for the sleeping baby upstairs...) My only complaint about the kitchen, really, was a lack of proper chopping boards. There were only two small glass bar boards and by the middle of the week my good chef's knives I'd brought with us were horrendously dulled - so much so that it took me 90 mins just to carve up a joint of meat!! So to anyone planning to do a lot of cooking / self-catering, I would recommend bringing a proper chopping board and/or a sharpener! Otherwise there was pretty much everything we needed and we ate like kings! There is a Booths and a Morrisons in Penrith, so shopping was a doddle.

The cottage itself was nicely appointed, very comfortable and functional, decor tasteful. The grounds are lovely and it was nice having the free library of books/ DVDs / games in the laundry room. We did resort to putting a DVD on for the kids on one rainy afternoon, which was very helpful.

There is a very nice pub within walking distance - well, if you're a keen walker - or a short drive - in Mungrisdale, with outdoor tables and a great view. I would suggest wearing your walking boots if planning to go cross-country over the hill instead of walking along the drive/road!! We had a fun, if adventurous, walk with the babies over the hill to the pub one afternoon.

Best of all was the friendly service from the owners. My son managed to lose a brand new toy (gift from Granny! oh dear) whilst we were there and within a week of returning home it turned up in the post! I was so impressed - both that they found it and that they could be bothered to send it back to us.

We've already started discussing dates to bring the whole family back next year. I would recommend it without reservations.

The beloved and I stayed here again for a week earlier in June. We stayed in Sharp Edge this time round and I loved the beautiful view...from my bath! All clean and full of modern touches. Great bed and good quality bedding. We forgot to bring towels, but found reasonable, good quality towels in Keswick at the Pitlochry store. If the weather forecast looks to be a bit iffy, bring some DVDs are the TV's have built in DVD players. We always feel very at home and very relaxed here. We will be back again next year!

The title says it all! We wouldn't keep going back if this place wasn't any good.

It is an oasis of tranquility thats close to all you need.

Can't speak highly enough of the accomodation, the owners. and of course the views.

Highly recommended.

We stayed in Sharp Edge, the upstairs apartment which was very modern and comfortable and had everything you could want, including a lovely shower and a very comfortable bed! The Lakeland weather was typically changeable but when the clouds disappear, the views from Near Howe are spectacular. Steve and Jill have made sure you have everything you need, but Tia the dog will regularly check on you to make sure you are okay!
